Synopsis

In the near future, humanity has taken its first steps towards journeying into the far reaches of the galaxy. Upon doing so they discover a huge race of insectoid aliens known as "Space Monsters." These aliens seem dedicated to the eradication of mankind as they near closer and closer to discovering Earth. In response, humanity develops giant fighting robots piloted by hand-picked youth from around the world.

Shortly after the discovery of the aliens, Noriko Takaya, the daughter of a famous deceased space captain, enters a training school despite her questionable talents as a pilot. There, she meets her polar opposite, the beautiful and talented Kazumi Amano, and is unexpectedly made to work together with her as they attempt to overcome the trauma of war as well as their own emotions.

Gunbuster is a sort of revision of the mecha genre based on the Yukio Mishima quote "The perfectly ordinary girl and the great philosopher are alike: for both, the smallest triviality can become the vision that wipes out the world." At its heart is a visceral coming-of-age story about looking up to the great people in your life and then seeing them beaten and broken by the world just like everyone else, and having to find the strength within you to become your own person. Though it has a lot of the trappings of 80s "hard sci-fi," it is obviously disinterested in following the rules ...

Mixed Feelings
Honestly pretty mid. The art was good and so was the dubbed voice acting in my opinion. Really fast watch finished it all in one day which I like because I don’t like shoes to have a billion episodes. Pretty rushed story and the first four episodes are extremely mid except the last two which actually have some pretty decent moments in them. Nothing crazy but a fun watch. But I’m not the biggest fan of the nudity ngl which I just don’t really like in any series that I watch. Some moments were fine I guess but a lot was just not needed. But ...

I don't understand who is the target audience of Gunbuster.
It pretends to be a Real Robot show with down to Earth characters and lots of pseudo science. Then you see that pilots in space don't wear any kind of a space suit. Then a secondary character dies within the same episode he is introduced in, and MC decides that she is now a hot blooded Super Robot protagonist. The titular Gunbuster appears that towers over normal mech and it has a completely different control scheme ala G Gundam. A lot of yelling happens, some monsters die, credits roll.

Gunbuster's key issue is its protagonist Noriko. ...

Blast From The Past: New Megazone 23 Anime To Be Crowdfunded Soon

Mecha anime shows are awesome but it's a shame that so few are released nowadays. Fortunately, AIC is bringing back one of their classics for older and newer fans. Is a reboot of Megazone 23 exciting enough to secure a successful crowdfunding campaign?
