Now that is mecha. No more of these awful round robots - we go straight to the massive flagship-sized robot that shoots laser beams from its eyes. ^^

I wonder what the Earth forces plan to do to fight against the bugs/white blood cells. I mean, the things spawn from stars for heaven's sake.... is it even possible to find and destroy all of the star colonies? Here's hoping they have an Overmind that can be taken down zerg-style and wipe out the entire race. And that it will put up an epicly awesome fight against Gunbuster.

The musical insert at the end was really nice and fit the mood perfectly.
An awesome looking mech and yes, much nicer than the round robots we've been given throughout the rest of this (brilliant) series.
Really enjoying this and will be downloading Diebuster as soon as I finish watching Gunbuster!

Great episode, the Gunbuster is epic. Also, the very fact that Noriko realizes that all she had been doing was crying, made me respect her character even more.

It's about f*cking time! The captain was gonna ram the damn ship into their's with the Gunbuster in it! I don't care who's left, I would have sent Gunbuster out there with an invalid if it would've helped.

Gunbuster itself is huge! An awesome entrance and an awesome takedown!

Oh man those alien things are tight, I'm really liking this concept, it's like the galaxy was a huge living organism and those things huge Bacteria using galaxy's "cells" as a host for reproduction. And the characters are really good. It was some intense final for this episode and the visuals are stunning, can't wait to see the other Gainax classics and more recent woks.

A mecha in this anime that actually looks good. Gunbuster is quite awesome and the soundtrack when it launched was sweet! Noriko isn't completely usless anymore? Finally.

Wow, complete turnaround from last 3 episodes. This one was actually pretty good.

I loved the part where the admiral brings up the possibility of humans being the useless strain of bacteria in the living being known as the universe. It can definitely be applied to today and how it seems that humans continue to go down a suicidal path of destruction and an alien species would see us as a tumor in the universe.

Jung's character confuses me though. She acts all kind and then turns into a jealous bitch and then turns into your best friend again...lol?

The Gunbuster is huge. Lol, wtf.

Yes because if it didn't, it'll be less awesome and less badass in it's entrance. LOL

Are you referring to Captain Tatsumi Tashiro? Because AFAIK although he commands the Exelion fleet, he wasn't called or ranked as an admiral as of this episode. The one that stated such an idea was that nameless, bespectacled guy wearing a lab coat in the opening presenting the scientific analysis of the space monsters to the commanding officers. I assume and I could be wrong though, that he might be a member of the Exelion science team.

It can definitely be applied to today and how it seems that humans continue to go down a suicidal path of destruction and an alien species would see us as a tumor in the universe.

With our current real world scenario, you might be right.

That was damn intense.

The bacteria metaphor was pretty stupid unless you assume some kind of will or mechanism that has values that consider human activity, mostly overusage of resources and environmental pollution I guess, to be wrong in itself since it's not like it really has any effect on the scale of everything. Or then it is sentinent and intelligent enough to understand humanity has the potential to develop the level of technology that could accelerate or outright cause the destruction of the universe as we know it. Well, who knows, in the end it's just the human side's interpretation based on what they have seen of the space monsters' behavior.

Also, nice to see Noriko getting more confidence. While the story has been pretty silly so far and I find the sound factor in general weak the character development and animation are excellent.

"When you do spill milk, just pour some more." Coah, you're such a badass.

Seriously, every time Noriko calls Amano "onee-sama" I can't help but think of MariMite. Jung Freud = Touko. MariMite in space lmao!

still can't get over that she got this far in the show, given that much responsiblity, and she's never done a single thing of note up until this point !

It's made very clear at the end they were told to finish up the story in two episodes, shame.

The best episode so far, it feels like the mecha space battle royale that pays off the first half of the series buildup. Knowing the brevity of this OVA, it's hard to stop yourself the first time from trying to predict how far we'll go in each episode. I was kind of worried at the beginning we were just going to spend a whole episode with Noriko broken. And truthfully we do, she spends the majority of it a disheveled mess. It seems like she's getting it together, but her breakdown during the attempted duel with Jung and the subsequent scenes of her in her bunk were harrowing to watch.

At this point if you're along for the ride, it's hard not to feel some empathy for Noriko here as she is at her lowest. It once again calls to mind EVA to me, with Shinji's avoidance of the robot meant to reflect his burgeoning depression. Here it's just supposed to represent a plot related trauma but it's effective in much the same way. I particularly keep thinking of her frantically thinking "will I be next?" as Amano and Jung argue over her. And her scene at the vending machine alone made me well up a little, again impressive for how little screen time Smith had.

In the big finale she suddenly finds the courage to defend her loved ones and the Earth itself. She steps into the experimental giant mech the Buster, which Coach had been subtly grooming her for. As a Gainax fan it's a really exciting scene to watch, as the hitherto unseen mech wooshes to the surface of the ship striking the signature Gainax pose for the first time. The birth of an era man, that it's followed up with the most impressive mech fight in the whole anime and a cathartic hero's ending worthy of Top Gun just adds to the excitement. I was a little disappointed that we'd only seen variations of the same alright mech until now. This beautiful bastard blew those complaints out of the water.

My hair was on end when Amano gleefully lands in Noriko's palm while the "I love you" part of the OP drops. It's a jaw dropping and extremely cinematic ending scene, one that feels worthy of a finale. That I doubt they'll try and top the sheer exuberance of this one interests me as to where the series is going now in its last 1/3rd.

The Gunbuster is kind of ugly. xD

Don't get me wrong because I liked the episode but... what about the Gunbuster?

Is she able to pilot it because her training? Or it was fear what restrained her? She was scared but just because she isn't anymore she is able to ride this? Could someone else do the same if given the chance? Is the Gunbuster made even for newbies? Haha. I'm not going to put much thought on this but at the same time, why? Besides she being the main character.

Edit: The only thing I didn't like is the red-haired girl getting mad because? She wants coach d?

That was the first time the gunbuster was operated in the series and I must say its one huge ass machine. Also I am proud of Noriko for destroying that Space monster leader with it, but I wished Kazumi was with her though. I think I love Noriko's character now.

So they wanted to ram the enemy flagship with their flagship, with gunbuster onboard... Yet they didn't want Gunbuster to launch and ram with the enemy flagship. Lol.

Gunbuster coming out of the Hatch with arms crossed was a perfect introduction to it in full stance, and playing the ending song with everyone victory cheering was perfect timing for a lyrical song. GG.
