Ergo Proxy

Within the domed city of Romdo lies one of the last human civilizations on Earth. Thousands of years ago, a global ecological catastrophe doomed the planet; now, life outside these domes is virtually impossible. To expedite mankind's recovery, "AutoReivs," humanoid-like robots, have been created to assist people in their day-to-day lives. However, AutoReivs have begun contracting an enigmatic disease called the "Cogito Virus," which grants them self-awareness. Re-l Mayer, the granddaughter of Romdo's ruler, is assigned to investigate this phenomenon alongside her AutoReiv partner, Iggy. But what begins as a routine investigation quickly spirals into a conspiracy as Re-l is confronted by humanity's darkest sins.

Elsewhere in Romdo, an AutoReiv specialist by the name of Vincent Law must also face his demons when surreal events begin occurring around him. Re-l, Iggy, Vincent, and the child AutoReiv named Pino will form an unlikely faction as they struggle to uncover Romdo's mysteries and discover the true purpose of the mythical beings called "Proxies."

Story: 16/20
Ergo Proxy takes us to a world where humanity has pushed the planet to the brink of destruction, forcing people to seek refuge in small civilizations enclosed within domes. The story begins in the Romdo dome, where we meet RE-L, an inspector. From the very beginning, we are introduced to AutoReivs, robotic assistants that coexist with humans. However, something feels off. As the series progresses, key characters are introduced, and by the midpoint, everything spirals out of control. Ergo Proxy presents a strong narrative that allows the viewer to interpret and construct its meaning in their own way.

Animation: 20/20
I watched the series in an ... HD version, and the improvement over the original is noticeable. This late 90s and early 2000s animation style is one of my favorites. The animation quality is flawless.

Sound: 18/20
Ergo Proxy has one of the best openings I have ever heard, on par with the most iconic anime intros. The soundtrack is excellent, featuring immersive tracks that perfectly match the atmosphere of each scene. I watched Ergo Proxy with Spanish dubbing, and the voice adaptation was very well done, making the characters feel authentic and true to their personalities.

Characters: 16/20
The characters in Ergo Proxy have interesting development, though some don’t reach their full potential. Daedalus and Vincent undergo significant growth, but others, like RE-L, seem to fall short, leaving the impression that their development could have been deeper.

Enjoyment: 16/20
This is not a series that can be easily watched or fully grasped in just a day or two. It requires patience and a willingness to understand its complexities. Additionally, there are a couple of episodes with a completely different style, which can feel jarring compared to the rest of the series.

Overall: 86/100
Ergo Proxy is the kind of series that likely improves upon rewatching after months or even years. A second viewing allows for deeper appreciation, uncovering hidden details, new interpretations, and a clearer understanding of its themes. I am confident that when I revisit it, it will climb several spots in my list of favorite anime.

Ergo Proxy nos transporta a un mundo donde la humanidad ha llevado al planeta al borde de la destrucción, viéndose obligada a refugiarse en pequeñas civilizaciones dentro de cúpulas. La historia comienza en la cúpula de Romdo, donde conocemos a RE-L, una inspectora. Desde el principio, se nos presentan los AutoReivs, robots asistentes que conviven con los humanos. Sin embargo, algo no parece estar del todo bien. A lo largo de la serie, se introducen personajes clave hasta que, aproximadamente a la mitad, todo se sale de control. Ergo Proxy ofrece una historia sólida que deja espacio para que el espectador la interprete y construya su propio significado.

Animación: 20/20
Vi la serie en una versión HD, y la mejora respecto a la original es notable. Este estilo de animación de finales de los 90 y principios de los 2000 es de mis favoritos. La calidad de la animación es impecable.

Sonido: 18/20
Ergo Proxy cuenta con uno de los mejores openings que he escuchado, al nivel de los más memorables del anime. La banda sonora es excelente, con piezas inmersivas que encajan perfectamente con la atmósfera de la serie. Vi Ergo Proxy con doblaje en castellano y la adaptación de voces me pareció muy acertada, logrando que los personajes se sientan auténticos y fieles a sus personalidades.

Personajes: 16/20
Los personajes de Ergo Proxy tienen un desarrollo interesante, aunque algunos no terminan de alcanzar su máximo potencial. Daedalus y Vincent tienen una evolución notable, pero otros, como RE-L, parecen quedarse a medio camino, lo que deja la sensación de que su desarrollo pudo haber sido más profundo.

Disfrute: 16/20
No es una serie fácil de ver ni de asimilar en poco tiempo. Requiere paciencia y un esfuerzo por comprender lo que está sucediendo. Además, hay un par de episodios con un estilo completamente diferente que pueden resultar chocantes en comparación con el resto de la serie.

General: 86/100
Ergo Proxy es una serie que, con un segundo visionado tras meses o años, seguramente se disfruta aún más. Al revisitarla, se pueden captar detalles que pasaron desapercibidos en la primera vez, obtener nuevas interpretaciones y apreciar mejor su complejidad. Estoy seguro de que, cuando la vuelva a ver, escalará varios puestos en mi lista de animes favoritos.

Mixed Feelings

Ergo Proxy often feels like it is juggling too much at one time. There are so many plotlines that should have been fleshed out more, but are instead put on the backburner; the cogito virus being the most glaring. The show is beautiful, with Re-L and Ergo Proxy especially having fantastic designs. This show has an atmopshere unlike anything else I've watched - a lot of topics and themes are explored but again none are truly fleshed out. I do think it is worth a watch regardless. God, the meaning of life, humanity, even racism are all front and centre here at one point or ... another.

If you want something more philosophical, and don't mind a slow burn (seriously - a good chunk of this show is spent on a journey with the same 3 characters) this is a good watch

Ergo Proxy has a lot of issues. It's hard to know where to start. One of the main problems is that it's too similar to Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Both stories are weak and are mainly there to distract from the flaws with dazzling visuals. It starts off well but quickly becomes tedious and slow. It tries too hard to be intelligent and ends up being annoying.

The first episode is excellent, and it looks amazing. It hooks you in, but unfortunately, the rest of the story is slow and doesn't have much momentum. There are too many episodes where one character just talks to ... themselves about their identity, and this drags on for too long. The plot is revealed in unrelated episodes, which is confusing. The ending raises more questions than answers.

The characters are not developed well enough. The relationships are explored, such as Vincent's struggles and his dynamic with Re-l, but they feel rushed. Pino provides comic relief, but her dialogue can be annoying.

The animation is the best part. It looks great, especially the cyberpunk and gothic elements. However, the characters' designs are inconsistent, which can be distracting, and the secondary male characters look too similar.

The soundtrack is unusual and fits the show's aesthetic, but it's repetitive, and the same few songs are played throughout.

Overall, Ergo Proxy is a disappointment. The first episode is good, but the rest is not worth watching. The animation and soundtrack are commendable, but the story and characters are weak.
