Yofukashi no Uta

Kou Yamori is an average middle school student who struggles with grasping the complex concept of love. Because he sees little sense in surrendering to the norm, he soon stops going to school. Plagued with insomnia due to his idleness, Kou begins roaming the lonesome streets at night.

One night, Kou encounters a bizarre girl named Nazuna Nanakusa who believes that people stay awake during the night because they are dissatisfied with how they spent their day and cannot rest until they release their inhibitions. Nazuna offers to help Kou with his sleep issues and invites him over to her place, where she convinces him to share a futon with her. Feeling uncomfortable, Kou only pretends to doze off—which is when Nazuna suddenly bites his neck, revealing herself to be a vampire!

While Kou thinks the bite will turn him into a vampire, the specifics of transforming are not that simple. In order to change, he must be bitten by someone he truly loves. Ready to let go of his dreary mortal life, Kou decides on a new goal: he will fall in love with Nazuna and become a vampire himself.

SO, I might write a better review in the future. But let me get this straight: "THIS ANIME'S FREAKING GOOD." It deserves your try! Especially if you like staying up at night, with cool visuals, cool openings, and a great MC who actually HAS PERSONALITY and SAYS WHAT HE'S THINKING. The visuals are stunning, with an art style that perfectly captures the atmosphere of nighttime adventures. The opening theme is so catchy that you'll find yourself humming it long after the episode ends. The main character is incredibly relatable and stands out because he genuinely expresses his thoughts and feelings. He isn't just a typical, ... bland protagonist, even though he seems like that; he has depth and charisma that develops along the episodes and makes you root for him.

Every episode leaves you wanting more, and the plot keeps you hooked from start to finish. The interactions between characters are dynamic and well-written, making their relationships feel real and engaging. This anime excels at building a good type of suspense and delivering satisfying payoffs here and there, making you really feel as if you're living it.

Go watch it, mtfckr. Trust me, you won't regret it.

9.5/10 - Waiting for more, GIVE ME MORE. (btw I want a romance progression so much).

Mixed Feelings

tl;dr: An anime with a really solid hook but that doesn’t really have enough to keep things interesting.

This is an anime about a boy named Kou that finds middle school too troublesome to have to deal with so he quits school and starts wandering around at night. There he encounters a girl named Nazuna who shows him how fun and freeing the night can be. However, she turns out to be a vampire who finds Kou’s blood especially delicious. And thus Kou decides that he wants her to turn him into a vampire too. The thing is, that a requirement for a vampire to turn ... someone into one of their kin, is for that someone to be in love with them. Thus, Kou and Nazuna begin hanging out at night with Kou doing his best to fall in love with Nazuna, even though he’s not quite sure what love is exactly.

This anime is one that will immediately dazzle you. The visual spectacle of the shining and glittering city will probably be enough to wow you. And on top of that Nazuna’s unconstrained way of life and Kou’s excitement at becoming a part of it will probably pull you in. The two have a pretty interesting dynamic. At one point it’s described as supply and demand, and while the specifics of how that’s used aren’t quite right in the grand scheme of things, the term itself is kind of true. They both need something new and exciting in their lives and each of them is providing the other a freshness to each other that is knocking them out of their everyday boredom. They have a lot of fun, and due to them being pretty hilarious its quite fun to watch as well.

Similarly, the two get involved with the stories of various others that live in the night. These range quite a bit, from being about a childhood friend of Kou, to Nazuna’s fellow vampire, to a random overworked salary woman. But in each of those stories, something similar happens. They knock something new and fresh into their old and boring lives. These stories are simple and don’t work too well if you think too much about them or put them under too heavy scrutiny. But in the context of the anime they can be downright exhilarating and pretty much always really amusing.

However, while these issues aren’t much of a problem when it comes to shorter side stories, these issues apply equally to the overarching story centered around Kou and Nazuna. And there the issues are far from easy to overlook. Kou and Nazuna each have a character arc going, but in the grand scheme of things, neither is all that interesting. Each of the two have a lot of presence when they explode into the story. But as things progress and they progress as character’s, it doesn’t really feel like they have that much to them. And then it starts feeling like the anime overall doesn’t really either.

At one point in the anime it’s brought up that the night starts becoming a lot less interesting once the feeling of freshness goes away and that that feeling of freshness doesn’t last long. That’s the general feeling I got towards the overarching story of this anime. It has a very unique feel that’s enough to draw you in. But even with the new elements that are introduced, eventually it just didn’t really feel like there was enough to keep things engaging. The ending was as solid as I would expect and I liked how it was brining things full circle in a way, though in a way that kind of drove home how the charm of the series was fading.

The art and animation are pretty solid. As mentioned, the scenery is fantastic and incredibly impressive. However, the art style for character’s, as well as character designs in general didn’t really impress me much. The OP and ED both had great songs and visuals. The soundtrack was great too, with the repeated insert song working really well with the atmosphere of the anime.

Call of the Night is one of those shows that the more you experience, the more you realize, how freaking horrendous it is. I am a manga reader, and I am an anime watcher. Albeit a year late, I am still here to tell you why this is such a monstrosity that I think it is. All aspects of this shows aside from the style are something I just can not appreciate. In my opinion, this garbage is one of the worst if not the worst coming-of-age stories ever.

The Call of the Night's plot is terribly predictable. Nothing in the anime surprises or holds ... the viewer's attention. The anime's themes are likewise not fully developed. The plot meanders aimlessly, failing to establish meaningful stakes or character motivation. Although the anime addresses some intriguing concepts related to vampires and the night, these concepts are never completely developed. And yes, they never do get developed in the way they could have been even in the manga. It feels directionless and so much wasted opportunity. The plot has massive pacing issues, quickly breezing over important details like Kou's emerging vampirism while belaboring pointless fanservice and moe scenes.

Kou is the stereotypical bland male protagonist, and his personal struggle is anything but compelling. The rest of the cast is equally one-dimensional and static throughout. Conversations between Kou and Nazuna completely lack authentic chemistry. Akira as Kou's childhood friend remains an undeveloped cliche.

Major plot turns likewise fall flat. Nazuna's vampire clan are tired archetypes when introduced, with no captivating dynamics between them, Nazuna, and Kou. The revelation of Kou's inner bloodlust feels jarringly out-of-character rather than an intriguing twist.

The handling of Nazuna and Kou's relationship continues to be appalling. Their relationship lacks any real depth, and is instead characterized by corny romantic comedy antics such embarrassing wardrobe mishaps.

Compelling themes like the humanity of vampires are introduced but never properly explored. Missed opportunities for philosophical discussions and moral dilemmas. The conflicts faced by the characters lack meaningful stakes or tension. Kou is vaguely warned about vampire hunters but they barely appear. Nazuna's backstory tragedy is glossed over.

The character motivations make little sense. Why does Nazuna take interest in Kou? Why does Kou go along with her whims so easily? Their bond defies logic. For a vampire-focused anime, surprisingly little time is actually spent on vampire activities. Much of it focuses on dull high school slice-of-life.

With poorly developed characters, a meandering plot, wasted potential, and a prioritization of filler content over vampire lore, Call of the Night fails to deliver in any way as a coming-of-age vampire anime. It earns its reputation as an utter disappointment for someone who was so excited after the anime announcement, that I read the entire goddamn manga.

(Note: Maybe what fueled my disappointment was me expecting it to be like or nearly as good as bakemonogatari. The average anime fan seems to enjoy it but these were my thoughts.)
