Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!

At the start of her freshman year in college, Hana Uzaki reunites with Shinichi Sakurai, an upperclassman who was in the same club as her during her high school days. However, much to her surprise, the once active senior has ended up becoming a "lonesome" student, preferring to spend his free time in quiet peace.

Uzaki does whatever she can to keep Sakurai from being "alone," from convincing him to go to the movies to going to his part-time workplace. While Sakurai finds her irritating and tiresome, he still goes along with Uzaki's hijinks and shenanigans, even if he knows that her perky personality will only lead the two of them into various comical situations.

Even so, as the days pass by, their relationship only gets better, to the point where people around them misinterpret them to be a couple. At any rate, whenever Uzaki wants to hang out with her upperclassman, fun and adorable wackiness is sure to follow!

I loved this anime! Although the show leans into some typical ecchi slice-of-life tropes, I personally believe that the college setting and the characters really make it engaging as a college student myself. I think Uzaki and Sakurai as protagonists make an awesome comedy duo, and their antics are ultimately what kept me coming back.

Production-wise, the show isn't the most amazingly animated piece of media ever, but I dont think it needs to be. It's competent and conveys everything that it needs to. Uzaki's VA (Japanese) is awesome and the way she teases Sakurai yet also is able to be timid at times shows off ... a great range of emotion.

Plot-wise, there isn't much to say. Most episodes are mostly self-contained, but frequently reference past events and characters. By the end, you do feel like you know them all quite well, and I'm glad I have a second season to look forward to.

I vaguely remember seeing stuff on Twitter and other socials about Uzaki and her design, but I quite like it and don't agree with the slander she got. I won't go into it, but it's seriously just weak arguments. I like how unique she is.

In conclusion, I have to recommend this show! It's sweet, fun, and will leave you itching for more.

Mixed Feelings

My first impression of the work was rather negative. Firstly, Sakurai's voice, the main male character, bothered me quite a bit. They chose to go with a voice that matched his "terrifying at first glance" appearance, which is heavily emphasized throughout the episodes. The fact that his gaze is scary and surprising, but in "normal" dialogues, his voice is a bit too deep to fit the situations. His voice doesn't quite match well with the moments when Sakurai will be calmer. However, with Uzaki, although he frequently raises his voice, he is also quite calm and transparent by nature. However, to contrast with what I ... just said, Uzaki's voice is simply perfect for the character. Oozora Naomi, her Seiyū, has beautifully interpreted her character; it's a 10/10!

Another thing that bothered me considerably is obviously the hypersexualization of Uzaki. Like many other works, the humor revolves around the sexualization of its characters, mainly the girls. Yes, you might say that in the case of Uzaki-chan, the story unfolds when they are 19-20 years old, unlike other stories that are often set in the 13-17 age range. But I feel like they gave the characters this age just to justify Uzaki's sexualization, even though she is 19-20 years old, she still has the physique of a teenager.. However, regarding the sexualization, I admit to having laughed a lot during this first season, and that's a HUGE positive point because we don't watch this anime to cry or to delve into a very deep plot, but to follow a slice of life, bringing us smiles, joy, and laughter. I make a lot of comparisons, but I found that although sexualized, the humor in this work was finer, less stupid than many others. For example, I laughed a lot at the moments when the two characters use their words very poorly in public and everyone around misunderstands things. It's something we've seen before, but the way the situations are created is different, although I couldn't explain it.

The animation is nice with some super original shots that resemble 3D at times (it looks a bit like fake 3D, but it's executed quite well). Season 1 was released in 2020, right in the middle of COVID, so I imagine they had complications like everyone else, but the quality was not affected at all! However, I didn't notice any outstanding music, it's quite subjective, but there's nothing particularly original in the OP or the ED, nor in the OST.

I liked the little references to other works, such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Uzaki directly references Jotaro and Kakyoin, and there are also references to Conan and many others!

If you're looking for an anime simply to laugh and enjoy the joy and good humor of a character, I recommend Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! If you're looking for something more structured, with a storyline following a plot, or something that can bring you different emotions (because this first season is practically all positive), I wouldn't recommend it.

Uzaki-chan feels like another carbon copy attempt of a SoL RomCom where our leads have opposite personalities. Nowadays, it feels like these types of romance anime are mass produced.

My issue with Uzaki-Chan is that it feels so uninspired and brings nothing new to the table. The show reminds me of the romance version of Demon Slayer where the idea's and plot developments are all reused and recycled. However, Demon Slayer made the best possible version of the reused material with everything else being dialed up to an 11.

Uzaki-chan did not dial anything to an 11.

If you have watched shows like Nagatoro (maybe not S1 but ... S2), Sono bisque, and Komi, you've essentially already passively watched Uzaki-chan. There is nothing novel that this show will provide to you.
If you haven't watched The shows above, WATCH THEM INSTEAD ( in the order of Sono bisque, Komi, and Nagatoro). They are much better shows that provide actual character moments which is so needed for a SoL.

3/10 go next.
