Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

As Kobayashi sets off for another day at work, she opens her apartment door only to be met by an unusually frightening sight—the head of a dragon, staring at her from across the balcony. The dragon immediately transforms into a cute, busty, and energetic young girl dressed in a maid outfit, introducing herself as Tooru.

It turns out that the stoic programmer had come across the dragon the previous night on a drunken excursion to the mountains, and since the mythical beast had nowhere else to go, she had offered the creature a place to stay in her home. Thus, Tooru had arrived to cash in on the offer, ready to repay her savior's kindness by working as her personal maidservant. Though deeply regretful of her words and hesitant to follow through on her promise, a mix of guilt and Tooru's incredible dragon abilities convinces Kobayashi to take the girl in.

Despite being extremely efficient at her job, the maid's unorthodox methods of housekeeping often end up horrifying Kobayashi and at times bring more trouble than help. Furthermore, the circumstances behind the dragon's arrival on Earth seem to be much more complicated than at first glance, as Tooru bears some heavy emotions and painful memories. To top it all off, Tooru's presence ends up attracting several other mythical beings to her new home, bringing in a host of eccentric personalities. Although Kobayashi makes her best effort to handle the crazy situation that she has found herself in, nothing has prepared her for this new life with a dragon maid.

The daily life of a salarywomen raising ancient dragons. 8/10

TL:DR; This is one of the most well-rounded, beautifully mundane slice of lifes out there - but with impeccably animated dragon shenanigans. The thoughtful character interactions go beyond anything a series like this has any right to pull off so well. And it's so cute and sweet, you'll get a cavity if you binge-watch it.

The Review:
A lot of series feature the ___ in human form concept, but this is one of the few that really incorporates their true form into the mix. It's not a one-and-done, single-dimensional joke in this series. They manage to keep the ... dragon maid concept fresh and just as random in each episode. It always goes in a direction you don't really expect, and if you do, the incredibly paced comedic timing still makes it funny. Not to mention, this series features some of the deepest mythological lore around side characters that it rivals entire backstories for MCs in other anime.

Playing up the "my first time ___ing" tropes, but never as the main focus for more than a few seconds. For example - Kanna and Tooru get in a car and go "ohh so this is a caaar?".. end scene. They don't spend 5 minutes milking the experience. They move right along to something relevant to the story or funnier.

Dragon Maid is one of those series where everything comes together to make a truly unique experience. There really is something in here for everyone; it doesn't matter what your preferred genre is.

Mixed Feelings

This show is really about Kyoto Ani using their usual skills, with incredible artistic storytelling to elevate a trash fetish work to be as wonderful and good hearted as it can be. There is a perfect story about found family and love in the midst of this, as well as appreciation for peace and leisure. The problem is, they chose a trash fetish work to faithfully adapt, and they also leaned into the fetish because it gets engagement for their business. There has never been a Kyoto Ani show with so many ridiculous balloon boobs.

It could teach people and maybe even porn addicts to appreciate ... life, and it also tries to get normal people to accept these disgusting fetishes. Empathy and love is important and healing, and the slice of life moments are very relatable. These dragons have tough lives. This series will always be objectifying and creepy, the studio is flawed, but I'd never guessed it'll go into vore, sexual molestation, children framed in sexual ways, forced stripping, jokes about sex slaves and exploitation. It's all justified in magic, but this is a basket of the author's thinly veiled fetishes. In this corrupted and exploitative industry, this kind of show will easily get popular and earn their money for other projects too.

It's such a shame that a notably progressive and women supporting studio in the usually patriarchal and misogynistic society of Japan has to follow demand and draw balloon boobs. It's even worse in season 2 with Illulu, with balloon boobs so ridiculous on a young teenager character, it actually distracts from the main themes of the show. They're just a business, they have their biases and must stick with the times.

This anime drained me so much, it was the catalyst of my 4 month burnout.

I was initially excited to watch a nice cozy slice of life anime, as the description suggested. It was so highly recommended online, plus it has good reviews on here, so I figured it would be a solid watch.

The premise is simple, and what follows is a string of cute antics as dragons try to fit into human society. But the problem is the show leans SO HARD into gimmicks and fanservice instead of going into what could’ve been a genuinely warm and character driven story. Every time the ... anime tries to hint at something deeper, it immediately reverts to awkward boob jokes or dramatized reactions. Plus the random ‘quirkiness’ that does not land.

I usually really like light hearted and slice of life shows, but this was just exhausting. It was trying way too hard, and the fan service was so out of place and uncomfortable. It completely ruined what could have been a cozy and feel-good anime. Definitely not for me.

Story: 4/10 — Shallow and overpowered by gimmicks
Animation: 6/10 — Kyoto Animation delivered decent visuals and smooth motion
Characters: 4/10 — Archetypes with wasted potential. A few charming moments, but nothing lasting.
Pacing: 4/10 — Starts off fine but quickly becomes repetitive and draining to watch.
Overall: 4/10 — Visually okay but extremely hollow and awkwardly sexualized
