Mob Psycho 100

Eighth-grader Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama has tapped into his inner wellspring of psychic prowess at a young age. But the power quickly proves to be a liability when he realizes the potential danger in his skills. Choosing to suppress his power, Mob's only present use for his ability is to impress his longtime crush, Tsubomi, who soon grows bored of the same tricks.

In order to effectuate control on his skills, Mob enlists himself under the wing of Arataka Reigen, a con artist claiming to be a psychic, who exploits Mob's powers for pocket change. Now, exorcising evil spirits on command has become a part of Mob's daily, monotonous life. However, the psychic energy he exerts is barely the tip of the iceberg; if his vast potential and unrestrained emotions run berserk, a cataclysmic event that would render him completely unrecognizable will be triggered. The progression toward Mob's explosion is rising and attempting to stop it is futile.

Summary:
This review is for the first season of the Mob Psycho 100 anime. This is a comedy anime with some action and adventure with quirky characters, a simple yet entertaining plot, and plenty of laughs. As a comedy, this story is funny and entertaining, although its unpredictable plot does meander a bit. Overall, this show is entertaining with unique art, although I wouldn't say Mob Psycho 100 is particularly meaningful beyond its entertainment value.

Story: 7/10
The plot of this first season is rather straightforward: the main character is a psychic with abilities that he is gradually learning to control. Additionally, he struggles socially and emotionally; ... his inability to let his emotions out leads to an explosion of his psychic powers. This season introduces the viewer to the world of everyday people, with some evil spirits and psychics on the rare side. The plot is probably the weakest part of this show, whereas the comedy is highly entertaining, so the overall story quality averages to 7/10.

Characters: 7/10
Although some of the characters are absurd, it adds to the humor of the story. As long as they aren't taken seriously, and I don't believe they are supposed to be based on this being an outlandish comedy anime, the characters are enjoyable, funny, and sometimes even add a layer of significance to the story. Overall, the characters are entertaining, albeit preposterous.

Art: 8/10
This show has an absolutely wild animation style, like nothing I've ever seen. I can only watch one or two episodes before feeling a headache coming on. However, the uniqueness does make the show stand out, and the art style is very fitting for this comedy and adventure genre.

Sound: 7/10
The soundtrack and sound effects are average, although the English voice acting is great.

Enjoyment: 7/10
The first season of Mob Psycho 100 is a strange mix of comedy and adventure that I found entertaining and quite humorous. I wouldn't say it is a super "deep" story, and I found some of the more absurd scenes unappealing, but this was overall a fun watch that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun show that isn't too meaningful.

Mixed Feelings

Started off strong, but lost me for the most part and then brought me back on board on the last two episodes.

You'd think from the first episode that this is going to be a supernatural centric show, but instead most episodes center around gangs and fighting between students. It does get better when Reigen comes back and somehow becomes the most sane and normal person in the show.

Animation is beautiful and artistic, with multiple styles sprinkled throughout. The lighting in this series is gorgeous. The style of the show can be unappealing to some, but I'd still recommend watching the series for the art.

Making the ... other middle schoolers look like they're 30-year-old was a fun, but confusing gag when there's actual adults who look the same age or even younger. Overall would've liked the kids to act more like their age.

There are couple uncomfortable pedo comments. They're just one-off comments/jokes, but they are there. There's also a naked 8th grader in one episode, but luckily it's not potrayed in a weird way.

Mob Psycho 100 (2016)

Who knew that those Youtube videos of fights would be literally the best bits of the whole show. This has to be one of the most overrated 5/10 shows I have seen in a long time. It's just an Isekai without leaving the world, so yes not an Isekai but still the overpowered main, with average friends and people trying to contain him. You do get rage and overpowered moments but then it tries to be funny which the show isn't by making it all comical.

The story tries to be a slice of life but misses out on most of the ... life aspects. It tries to be funny and yet I never laughed. It tries to be full of action but then it is such a small portion of the show and then it has supernatural, yes it does just average in the way it does though. The story itself is pretty dull and it tries to make it seem like there is a point to it all but then there isn't. A slice of life is a slice of life, and a plot is a plot. Trying to do both at the same time just doesn't really work.

The art is oldish, it is comic book style but then boring. It tries to be flashy but it falls down at the last hurdle by hiding mediocre style behind the screen of art style. Characters all sort of feeling dull and it doesn't particularly excite me at all.

The sound should be big, huge, and crazy when they fight but it does nothing. The voices are fine, music is okay but the main thing you want in the fight is lacking. Imagine watching a war film with BB gun noises instead of rifle noises, that is what this is. You can make something look as flashy as you want but if the sound doesn't match then there is no point.

The characters are wide and varied but still dull, boring, and unimagined. Mob himself is one of the most boring protagonists I have ever seen.

Maybe I came too late but then I've watched shows from the 1980s with more excitement than this. Had a read through the source material and it isn't much better. The story is all over the place trying to cover a mass of directions and routes all at once whilst not really doing anything. It is a solid 4/10 in the end for me. The hype train definitely should have gone through this station and not stopped.
