Mob Psycho 100

(spoiler-free review)

Mob Psycho was a show I really wanted to enjoy. After I heard about it from one of my friends, I searched it up to see if it would be worth my time. Everyone had great things to say about it, and some even went as far as to say it was the greatest anime of all time. This, however, was not the case for me.

Firstly, I'd like to talk about the positive traits of this show because although I didn't enjoy the series that much, there are still a few things I enjoyed.

Art/Animation:

Let me say this: Mob Psycho 100 has the ... most ridiculous, in your face, outright crazy art style, but that's what makes it so great. Right after seeing the first frame, I was instantly turned off from the strange and wacky animation, but later on, it really grew on me. It works really well with the characters and comedy of the show, and I thought it was the best part. Overall I give the art an 8/10.

Sound:

The shows sound is good as well. I felt like the sound really fit the scenes and made the show much more watchable. In some moments the music completely changed the tone of the story (along with the art of course), and all in all, it wasn't bad. Overall I give the sound a 7/10.

Characters:

According to most people, the characters in this show are AMAZING, and I agree... that one of the characters is amazing (I'm not going to say who, but his name might start with Re). Aside from that one character, I feel like I missed something out of the others. In fact, I found most of them to be quite cringe-worthy and/or decent characters. If you watch the show, you might just wanna come back here and kill me for saying that, but I'm being completely honest. If you wanna message me and explain why you think they're great, feel free to add me! Overall I give the characters a 7/10.

And now we get into the - not so good part of Mob Psycho.

Story/Plot:

THIS part of the show is what really brings my rating down. I love myself a good ass story. If the story isn't good, the chances of me liking the show go down quite a bit. Having watched/read titles such as Death Note, Code Geass, One Piece, and Oyasumi Punpun (which are all amazing stories that I highly recommend), this mediocre story seriously kills the series for me. I understand that some shows aren't supposed to have crazy plots, and I have definitely enjoyed many shows that aren't story-driven, however, Mob Psycho has so many pointless and boring episodes, that it almost seems like some episodes are just fillers. Maybe I'm missing something, and the story is actually fantastic, but I have yet to find that missing piece. Overall I give the story a 5/10.

To conclude, I wouldn't go out of my way to watch Mob Psycho. Sure, lots of people think very highly of the show, and some people can't stop talking about it, but in my opinion, it's a little over-hyped and the story needs to be worked on. As I mentioned, the series is loved by many, so it probably isn't a waste of time to check out. I'm just a random anime guy, so watch whatever you'd like!

I have never found myself skipping through an anime's final episode the way I was with Mob Psycho's final episode.

Going into Mob Psycho 100, I was completely oblivious to anything related to what the show consisted of, other than that the animation is outstanding. Sadly, even the animation was a bit of a let down. Organization was the downfall of this show that had the potential to rival its brother, One Punch Man. The story jumps around far too much, and the story lines are pretty bad. The mini arc with the student council and its corruption was truly pointless, as Ritsu's character development ... he got from that storyline went nowhere. The rescue mission started out extremely interesting, and it looked like the show would end with a sick final boss fight like OPM does.

But that twist in the last two episodes... WTF? The boss man comes in, does some stupid con-artist stuff... and saves the day? Who wanted that? Such a let down.

There were so many interesting ways the story could have gone. A battle between brothers, an epic show down brothers vs claw agents. But no. It fell hostage to trying too hard to be comedic like One Punch Man was and pretty much just threw the entire series down the drain. Was still somewhat enjoyable to watch tho, wouldnt rewatch ever again

From the same creator of One Punch Man, now we have Mob Psycho 100.
The title refers our "hero" Shigeo "Mob", a guy who works so hard to maintain the control of his powers that his personality was pratically erased. As ONES's previous work, the world of Mob Psycho is well set( we have espers and they are know, as those espers have diferent habilities), a main character who is absolutely overpowered, it have comedy on it, so, it was a huge success right?!?! WRONG!!! It's all because of one word... charisma... this show just lacks charisma... Mob is boring, his "boss" is boring, his ... parents are boring the storyline, boring, the girl that Mob likes... boring, the only light that i saw on the whole show, was his brother Ritsu, and Mob's interaction with him, there was i time, during the show that i even forgot that Mob was the mc(during his brother arc), because Shigeo is absolutely forgetable.
I'm not complaining about the cheesy characters, because that was definitely the author's intention, and it was funny.... sometimes.... but, it had no counterpoint... awesome action with cheesy characters with bad jokes, this is what this show is all about.
Story - Ok, ONE KNOWS how to make a story about a overpowered character, it makes you want to watch more, because the world that he created is interesting...
Art - I do like simple art, not every anime has to have that gorgeous animation with nice looking girls to do the job, the color concept, how he treated emotions through colors it was all nice...
Sound - It's studio freaking BONES that we are talking about here, so, it is awesome, since the opening theme, from power sound effects, voices, it all mixes well with the show feel...
Character - Here is where the anime biggest flaw, i got the intention on make Mob kind of "flat", and i even agree with that, but, every character on the show was TOO MUCH, maybe that's why i liked the brother that much, it has depth, can't talk much about him otherwise i'll spoil the best part of the show.
Enjoyment - A fair story, with an interesting art, awesome sound from the creator of One Punch Man!!!! It was supposed to be a huge hit, right? Nope :( When it was good, man, it was AWESOME, but i was looking asside the incredible fight scenes something else that is good to talk about the show, but.. i couldn't find any... everything else was... "meehhhh".. whatever... ok...
Overall - If you are looking for a show with incredible fight sequences, this is for you, it have a lot of action, but, if you take this aspect and compare it with the rest, the show lacks a lot... I know that a lot of people gave incredible high rates for this show, and it is a must see, but if you like a good story along with your action show don't hold your expectations too high

Back when Mob Psycho 100 came out, I heard a lot of praising coming out about it, and having thoroughly enjoyed another series written by the same person, One Punch Man, I immediately put this on the list to watch. I put off watching this for a long time, but I eventually got around to watching it and my initial reaction to it was "Meh." That's not to say Mob Psycho is a bad show by any means, it is certainly very good, I just wasn't all that into it. The first half consists of mostly one-two episode stories that are just there to establish ... some new characters before we get into the second half of the series, which actually has a story. Unfortunately, it's a pretty boring story. It just boils down to here's a group of bad guys that are bad for no reason, fight them. I'll go more into it later but the story was very underwhelming. The story's stakes are also virtually non-existent because its established early on that Mob is too OP to be hurt and all of the other characters have plot armor. 3/10 for the story.

From that last tangent, you would wonder why I said that this show is good, and these next two categories are why. The art and animation of this series are just fantastic. All of the characters have unique and memorable designs, the animation is fluid and colorful. It's just great to look at. The music in this series is also great. The OP of this series is great. No matter how little I cared about the story of this series, I always got hyped to watch some more just because of the opening alone. 10 for art and 9 for sound.

Now back to the things I didn't like, the characters. Starting with the protagonist, Mob. He's just too OP. There's no stakes in any of his fights because you know he'll win. I hate characters like these, because they feel completely unrealistic. This is very similar to Saitama from One Punch Man, who, as I mentioned, was written by the same person. However, while I wasn't a fan of the fights involving Saitama, I enjoyed it because Saitama was just a fun character to watch. He's funny and his voice actor really puts a lot of emotion into his lines. Mob is not that. He's bland, and feels like he has no emotion at all. It just baffles me that the author can do a character right one time and then do the same character totally wrong the next time. Moving on, the villains in this series are not interesting in the slightest. They are not given enough screen time to make them memorable, which wouldn't be a problem, if I liked watching the protagonist. Some of you might not like me comparing these two shows again, but it helps me show what I'm talking about. One Punch Man also had some very unmemorable villains, simply because they didn't really have any time to develop, show their motivations or become engaging to watch in their own right. However, it wasn't as big of a problem in that series because I enjoyed watching Saitama so much. I don't like watching Mob, and because we focus on him instead of spending time trying to make the villains interesting, I'm just stuck there waiting for the episode to end without anything interesting. Well, there are some things that are interesting. Namely, the mentor figure, Reigen. The show quickly establishes that Mob and Reigen's student-teacher relationship is completely backwards, which is often played for laughs (although this does stop being funny after the second time), but I really did like Reigen's character. He's fun to watch, he has some of the best lines in the show and he's shown to be very insightful and kind towards the end of the season. There are more characters I could go into, but I mostly felt either neutral towards them or just disliked them. Since I can't remember another character I actually liked right now, I'll just move on. I'll give this section a 4/10.

This show was honestly quite boring to sit through. While I enjoyed rocking out to the OP and watching the incredible animation (especially during fight scenes), that was not enough to save this show for me. The style of humor this show goes for gets old quickly (although I did laugh quite a few times), and it just doesn't quite engage me as well as I had hoped the same person who gave us One Punch Man would. I'll give this another 4 for enjoyment.

Overall, this show was just not for me. I can appreciate the series' incredible animation and music, but I can't say that the rest is anything special. The show is average at best. If you're looking for something that's just really nice to look at, I'd say this is a great candidate, but if you are looking for something more than that, I'd just say go rewatch One Punch Man (I know that I compared this show to OPM a lot and not everyone is okay with that, but the two shows are just very similar so it helps me show why I was disappointed by Mob Psycho 100).

Disappointing waste of potential due to ONE seemingly forgetting what he's good at.

To get it out of the way, Mob Psycho 100 is gorgeous, art style is fresh and pretty to look at thanks to well done line weight and good color direction. It has some of the most impressive animation since One-Punch Man, every episode has at least few moments of outstanding animation and fights are always breathtaking. When the show tries to be funny it very much is, there's plenty of comedy here both in visuals and dialogue and aside from visuals that's the second biggest strength of the show.

My gripe lies ... with everything from episode 5 where show goes to shit and episode 11 where it gets back up. For pretty much half of the show's run time it forgets what it's good at which is being funny and tries to tell a completely asinine, edgy story about jealousy, fear of your own powers and not fitting into society due to one reason or another. None of those are bad by themselves but the way it's done is lazy and predictable way that doesn't add anything to the story and almost completely cuts out comedy.

That's pretty much it, funny, good looking show that for whatever reason forgets what it's good at for half of the run time.

When the show is good it’s really good. But I found it to be often boring. I was not interested in it until episode 5. I would have dropped it early on if not for the show’s reputation. I thought the series was of inconsistent quality, there were high highs but also low lows. In one episode Mob would be fighting other psychics and then the next he is just in school and nothing of note happens. The biggest problem for me was that ... I lost interest in it during the school parts and it was hard to get back into it afterwards. It was a slog to get through towards the end. The villains are all uninteresting and underwritten. One Punch Man had that problem too, but at least that show had the superhero parody to fall back on. It was interesting to see Mob slowly gain more of a personality and Reigen was great from the start. I also liked the anti-elitism theme that ran through the show. Overall, the show wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either. If you liked One Punch Man, then you’ll probably like this. But I liked One Punch Man and didn’t like this. So….I don’t know. I would recommend giving it a try don’t believe the hype.

Those series ended up being a bit.. underwhelming.

There are some similarities with one punch man, in the sense that there are people with supernatural abilities here. However unlike one punch man, this title is more focused on character development and motives, plus on the protagonist's character, and character's choices. I enjoyed action parts of the show, and character-development part of the shoe.

The problem is... the story for some reason took an unexpected direction in episodes near this season's end, and I didn't enjoy those episodes much. Didn't see the ending coming, though.

Story:
Aside from few episodes near the end, it iinteresting. Characters are ... somewhat relatable, and are not cliched, although there are several one-time comic characters showing up now and then.

Art:
The show mimics original art by ONE. Meaning it is very different from standard anime - character's are drawn in simplistic/rough fashion, and some of the background characters may be downright ugly and may resemble unskilled drawings. However, you quickly get used to this style, and it works great in action scenes. It is not Kemonozume, but it is fairly unusual. Still all the important characters are quite well drawn, despite the overall "rough" style.

Sound:
Very entertaining/interesting intro song. Overal music is very good, without any cliched themes.

Character:
As mentioned earlier, they're relatable and undergo character development, although some of them serve as comic relieff. Characters aren't as simple as they would seem at a first glance, and over the time they slowly develop, plus you start learning new sides of their character.

Overall:
It is good, but I expected more after seeing first episodes. It is definitely worth checking out, and probably would work best if you watch the whole season in one sitting.

I consider mob psycho 100 better than one punch man in some aspects, (which does not mean I do not like any of the 2) to start psycho 100 mob (MP 100) is less repetitive than OPM, but has no objective
also 100 has a plot, (unlike one punch man) but puts comedy scenes in serious moments which means that you can not take the series in cerium, the protagonist has no personality and the music is forgettable
(Not to mention that the series has a joke that is repeated too much like OPM)
conclusion: it's better than OPM but it's still mediocre

también 100 tiene una trama,(a diferencia de one punch man) pero mete escenas de comedia en momentos serios lo cual hace que no te puedas tomar en cerio la serie,el protagonista no tiene personalidad y la música es olvidable
(eso sin mencionar que la serie tiene un chiste que se repite demasiado al igual que OPM)
conclusión: es mejor que OPM pero sigue siendo mediocre

Really wanted to enjoy this anime given that it was made by the creators of One Punch man and it had high ratings. However, unfortunately for me, I was very disappointed.

One of the main reasons was the art style. I just did not like it at all. I was hoping for it to grow onto me as the series went on but it never happened and it was a constant source of annoyance detracting from the story. However, many people seem to like the unique style so it might be just me so I would suggest giving it a go. Also, despite the art style ... being bad the animation was a bit better and many scenes rolled out quite nicely.

Another reason was the characters. I just did not connect with the main character at all. Despite him being quite OP on a physical level, his personality was something I could not stand at all. He is very unemotional and just lacks any resemblance of common sense which makes him just frustrating to follow. The arbitrary restrictions of not using his powers on others imposed by his master also just felt very silly.

Regarding the story, it felt very episodic (maybe it was the intention) as opposed to there being a real plot behind it. I also did not like the exorcist element at all a) because it is a very lame concept in the first place imo and b)there was no uncertainty about any encounter ever since the viewer always knew that Mob could take care of the situation

I was expecting something like One Punch Man, and i'm not surprised, for the graphic style at least cuz we can see that they are the same, even if I find those in Mob Psycho ugly compared to One Punch Man, the fact that I don't like the art style is blocking me for liking it more. For the humour, I didn't find it funny, I, maybe, had some smile but nothing really leave a mark on my mind. The story was normal for me, nothing extraordinary, I didn't care about the characters, nobody was interesting enough for me. I will still look Season 2 ... because it's still a good anime to spend time even if sometimes the episodes are too long for me.

Funny setting and good start.
Develops in a repetitive routine which at a certain point lower the interest.
The main character and his sensei are well-rounded and interesting, all the others are just extras with close to no importance.
The poor art which is a trait given by the author to the anime, surely make it funny and give it personality but in the long run watching every character male or female being a similar ugly sketch cuts off the involvment.
Bad guys irrelevant, mediocre comic gags.

It's the story of "kid version of Saitama" with ridicolous mind powers seasoned by the usual strange extras which ,differently from OPM, ... are utterly irrelevant, ugly, boring and forgettable,
The anime is just mediocre/fine. It's good if you have nothing else to see, but if you do, you can skip this with no doubt.

Mob Psycho 100 is a hard hit or miss for most people. Me personally I didn't find much interest in it but still I felt like completing it because I hoped it would get better over time but it really didn't.

The story is alright. The pacing is actually quiet nice with each episode have some fight and some solid convos between the characters. But the quality of the episode differed greatly from one another. The beginning especially I didn't like very much as it had a confusing start. But the series sort of did grow on me as time went on. It actually has more ... meaning and depth than One Punch but most of it's meaningful/impactful moments are ruined by stereotypical shallow comedy and its trying too hard to be comical which becomes annoying instead. The whole world and the idea of Mob Psycho 100 is interesting but is ruined by lackluster creativity and writing.

The characters are alright. Though the main character Mob is basically One Punch Man the personality, the looks, pretty much everything though there are some slight differences. The other supporting characters and main characters are meh. I had no attachment to them and couldn't connect at all to any of them at a personal level. I didn't like them or hate then.

The visuals are unique and aesthically pleasing, very abstract and "scratchy". With heavy penciling. And was quiet unique from your typical anime. Though the animation is sub par compared to One Punch S1 . The music is also good but I wished they had changed some of the instruments in certain scenes since they didn't fit my liking or didn't match the tone of the scene.

An alright anime a miss or hit for most people.

Pulling off a good anime with an overpowered protagonist is not easy. For a variety of reasons One Punch Man managed to strike the right balance and deliver an enjoyable and entertaining series.

Sadly the follow up work Mob Psycho 100 feels like a the author recycled the same basic ideas but produced absolute garbage. In almost every way this series is a disappointing imitation of One Punch Man, and the most entertaining thing about it was the janken game in the interval.

Breaking down the aspects:

STORY: 5: The story is cliched. The protagonist has superpowers which he gains with no effort. Yet for some reason ... he's not popular. His brother is jealous sparking a sibling rivalry. It ends with him going to rescue his friends. The world building is shoddy. At times it seems that no-one knows/believes in psychics yet they use their powers flashily in public and it seems there are a large number worldwide...I couldn't really connect with the world they tried to portray at all. At least in One Punch Man it was clear superheroes were a recognised existence...

ART: 6: Some people might like the traditional style art here. Personally it's not my thing. It looks childish and sloppy. As a result I felt that the few serious scenes lost impact. But I won't criticise it too harshly on this as it's probably more personal taste.

SOUND: 5: Maybe because I finished Food Wars before which utilizes sound excellently, but the lack of a good soundtrack was clear. Aside from the opening tune which was great, the music failed to deliver.

CHARACTER: 4: The MC is dull, vapid and bland. His brother is talented without as much power. The MC's master is a dislikeable con-artist. There are some under-developed side characters. I felt little to no connection with any of the main characters. To boot the villains are disappointing and one dimensional.

ENJOYMENT: 5: It had a few decent -ish action scenes and a couple of reasonable twists...but the climactic episode summed up just how disappointing this series was. The enemies attacks were flicked aside and then we had a ton of cliched, boring and needless conversation with the defeated villains. It does the phrase anti-climactic a disservice.

Overall I can't recommend such a bland and insipid series, I can only wonder how it's managed to place so high...

Even if this is an anime based in comedy, we can agree that this serie has good messages to it viewers, "don't be greedy", "only you can change yourself" etc etc. These are very good messages in the current times cause people use to be depressed or sad if they don't have special abilities in their daily life (obviously is not the cure to depression or sadness but good messages always are ok)

as for the series and it characters:
-Mob is a good character because even if he has physhic superpowers and he could do anything he want, Mob wants to be ... someone just for himself, not because he has powers, his weaknesses feels very natural and his behavior as a teenager is credible
-Reigen is that character that has divided opinions in my mind, because he has been cheating on mob just to get money but he has been a good support to mob, bc he educates him and how he should use his powers
-Ekubo is just a funny character xd
-Teruki is a good example that you shouldn't be greedy just because you are special, because if you lost that powers you are anyone again, and that is not how it should be
- Ritsu is a good brother and his jealousy towards his brother are interestics

the ost is ok, the ending is a masterpiece and the animation is good to this serie that is about action

Writing comedy is one of the hardest genres because there are certain unwritten rules. There tends to be a tension in comedic stories between comical aspects and character development. Stray too far from either and it breaks audience expectations developed in the Prologue.

If the story is trivial, viewers will complain it goes nowhere. Episodic "comic strip" stories often fall into this category, since characters end up in the same place after each episode. But it's even worse to do the opposite - to make the characters or plot too serious, because this goes against the expectation for comedy.

Mob Psycho 100 highlights the difficulty for many ... comedy authors when it comes to advancing the story while maintaining a light-hearted tone. Across the two seasons, we transition from a Slice of Life that relies on gags to an Adventure Shonen. I found this to be a shame because the story was much more enjoyable when the focus was the relationship of Mob and Reigen, the oblivious student and the teacher keeping up appearances.

The author behind One Punch returns with their art style, satire humor, and another solid story which does not take itself too seriously. This time, the whole work is now fully animated into 3 captivating seasons.

Fans of One-Punch will quickly recognize the animation style. The drawings are simple enough that sets a light-hearted mood for the show to take place. It often pokes fun at common anime tropes, and common cultural norms and expectations. For example one episode in Season III has "visitors" with large gleaming anime eyes; outside of this most of the cast has ... standardly drawn eyes. Do not expect Mob Psycho 100 to have excessive flair and next gen animation many shows have now. The art does its job while stepping back to allow the story & characters take center stage.

General story takes place in modern Japan, with one caveat - there are spirits and a few select individuals who at varying skill levels have psychic abilities. These abilities do not make the characters unrelatable though, they all have their fair share of everyday struggles like any person would. There are some cases with battle scenes (mainly season 2) showcasing psychic powers, but for the most part the show decides to let the powers serve as a source of character growth.

Without spoiling anything, the character development is where the story really decides to shine. Several of the characters each have one area of their life they struggle with, and how the quirky, twist of events guides characters confronting their own challenges. It's not a groundbreaking concept but provides decent entertainment value while doing so. More than anything this show gets better as it progresses with the 3rd season being the best in my opinion. It ends at just the right spot, hitting all the right points it wants to get across while also having viewers want just a bit more.

Great anime but definitely cheap on the animation. The beginning of the first episode is a cheaply animated colorful light show with cheap and easily drawn enemies. Then the background characters are just as bad if not worse. The main story is great though... just gotta get past the beginning of the series. Its definitely how it remains highly rated the story is after all.. All it has going 4 it. The comedy is great too. Personally i think the animators messed up bad with the first couple episodes having little effort put into the background animation gives this series a bad first impression.
