I agree with your Infinite Dendrogram review.

Saw your review on Mushoku Kyousei Shuuyoujo, just finished my read. Honestly slightly disappointed.

> Juuni Kokuki may be worth watching, but this show is an oddity because it has varying quality quality of story arcs [...]
> I'd recommend to watch first 13 episodes of "Twelve kingdoms" and then stop. Past that point it becomes more and more
> disappointing, and barely recovers at the end.

Thank you Sir, that is precisely the kind of answer I hoped for and that you do not easily find elsewhere. As said earlier I trust your rating and opinion, we are only off by 0.2 over our common completed subset.

> As for alternative titles I'd recommend Seirei no Moribito, because off the top of my head it is the most similar one
> I can think of.

OK, so keeping in mind my TBW is endless anyway and I have a lot of quality stuff to catch up with anyway, I picked Seirei no Moribito as new entry for TBW.

Rationale: Your recommendation, and that about the 1/3 of my friends (picked mainly for rating behaviour) who watched it give rated an average of 7.1. It's both higher rated and more popular than Juuni Kokuki with them.

Juuni Kokuki has only 2 people who watched it, and those two fundamentally disagree: 10 vs. 6. Along with your 6, that sounds more 6-ish.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I found (and upvoted, thx for doing it) your review of Juuni Kokuki. I am fantasy trash and have been looking for good epic/high fantasy in anime. Seems the genre is not truely blessed in anime. The chinese influence sounds interesting.

Your rating system is full-range / gaussian, i.e. compatible with mine. Thus a 6 is already something. Would you recommend this show, or you have an even better alternative?

Decent review on the Devilman Crybaby I noticed the exact same problem with the art direction it works to a degree but completely falls flat when comes to depiction of the demons they don't have the same terror, gruesome and evilness of the designs in the manga or the OVA.

i just wanted to thank you for turning me on to kakegurui. i found it most enjoyable, would have and waited for who knows how long if it wasnt for your review.
neph909 Oct 22, 2017 6:41 AM
well i've only seen one episode and it seems like exactly what i thought you were saying. reading between your lines it sounded like a pretty fun show. i dont expect anything deep, just a bunch of hot chicks taking the piss outta each other. and so far its exactly that. i dig it.
neph909 Oct 22, 2017 5:45 AM
im not sure what you mean by disgusting? in look? personality? sexually? because alot of the things you point out elude to the fact thats its probably due to the fact of trying to make gambling interesting without boring the viewer. but who knows? you could be correct. i'd say its not really my kinda show like foodwars, but even that kinda kept my attention for a season. oh nvm i never finished it.

your review of kakegurui made me really wanna give it a shot. ty

And if it were my own kids, Yu Yu Hakusho would be my anime of choice. Followed probably pretty close by Boku no Hero Academia. lol.

Yeah I am just impressed that they didn't completely censor Jibanyan dying and stuff like that. Cause Sailor Moon and Yugioh censored every last one of those. And no, it didn't matter that they didn't really die or that they came back or anything like that. Also Digimon had that weird habit of doing puns whenever things got dangerous. Which is why I say the censorship level is more at a Digimon level than a Pokemon level which even censored perfectly innocent food like rice balls. No seriously Pokemon censored Riceballs (granted Yokai watch did that weird thing with the pie lol I mean I did laugh but it hasn't been every instance making me tilt my head).

Card Capture is actually pretty good but it was so heavily censored it is actually hard to enjoy dubbed (personal opinion as someone who has been watching it both ways recently and only recently put it on hold). It is one of those series that removes romantic elements to the point where the series feels weird without them- Card Captures is often listed in people's top 10 worst dubbed anime for censorship reasons but Yugioh usually takes a #1 or #2 spot with Sailor Moon Dic dub(normally people feel sorry enough for Speed Racer to not mention it). I do watch all kids anime both subbed and dubbed. It has actually been dubbed twice and they didn't even get it right the second time. Mostly because I find it kinda fascinating. Like Yokai watch does do that weird thing getting rid of all writing. It does get rid or SOME of the food. But not all. So it is just weird. And not all writing is bad unlike in Yugioh where seriously all writing is bad.

There is another yokai I was rather impressed just wasn't cut and that was Cheeksqueek lol. Even a butt for a face probably normally freaks out most censors.

I think the least censored children's anime was Digimon Tamers- To the point where I know people who say they were traumatized by Digimon Tamers ending (people call it the Evangelion of children's anime- which isn't exactly accurate but it will make kids cry for sure, I cry as an adult). Which yeah Yokai watch is more censored than Digimon Tamers. But it is on par with Digimon Adventure. (Americanization of names, allowance of romance, even if it is the wrong ones- cause Digimon adventure actually makes you think Tai Sora is a thing when actually it is Matt/Sora, the taking out of the more extreme bits that would make people mad like the implied tentacles sexual stuff, and just make more puns in the face of danger).

But yeah I can understand what you are saying. Kids anime isn't for everyone. A lot like how ecchi anime isn't for everyone. But Adults can like and get stuff out of kids anime. Even if it is hard to understand adults liking My Little Pony, they do. And I think everyone likes Batman the Animated series and Batman Beyond has a sizable fanbase that still loves it. I didn't watch either of them until I was an adult and I did like them as well as Xmen. Which yeah you are going to say "but those are cartoons" but in Japan, all cartoons are anime. just sayin. And when I sit down to watch kids anime, I am often in a cartoon mood.

Oh and as an article details earlier. Monster Butts are also not OK in children's anime.

If you want to get down to it. Sailor Moon was heavily censored and even in it's censored form my mom wouldn't let me watch it.

Yugioh was heavily censored and parents still had a bitch fit about every little thing in it and still call ILLUMINATI on it.

As far as I can tell, Yokai Watch has only censored Bikinis. Which to me doesn't effect me. Pokemon censored rice balls.

And I was impressed Jibanyan wasn't censored because had it been a 90's anime, you bet your butt it would have. I cried my eyes out.
Energetic-Nova Sep 6, 2017 4:55 PM
I think I just took issue with the idea that "no adult could get anything out of this" even though I think most people know by now that well, regardless of how childish a show is, adults probably watch it.

Just going to say, Azumanga is VERY inappropriate for kids as someone who actually watched it. No one under 12 should be shown that. It has a literal child pervert seriously. lol. I would get is so much trouble if I showed someone else's kid that. Konosuba is even worse from what I have seen (random episodes). Also it is reference humor for Otaku so you are only watching it for you.

If you want to know where the real boarder is:
Pokemon was banned in so many households you have no idea just because it had evolution.
Yugioh was banned in many households because it was seen as demonic.
Sailor Moon was banned in my mom's house because the girl had an implied naked transformation sequence and she wore a skirt way too short and dated a college guy. 14 year old dating a college guy is pretty raunchy just saying no matter how much of a happy face you try to put on it.
Any anime where a character dies upsets parents because it upsets their kids. Any anime with big breasted women (especially as main or recurring characters) are also bad because I guess big breasts don't exist in real life.
Any anime with Nudity even if it wasn't sexual like Inuyasha or Digimon, yeah Digimon's hotsprings episode upset parents. ANY ANIME with a hotsprings episode.
Anime with romance at all could be seen as bad too. Which is why they are often censored out of anime like Sonic X. And really confusing in anime like Card Capture Sakura. And lets just say I wouldn't want any kid of mine growing up to read the Usagi Drop manga when it was a childhood favorite... O////O

Learning what each individual parent thinks is OK can be challenging. But in general if it has nudity it is a NO GO. If it has a pedophile that is also bad. If it has gay stuff, the parent would actually have to be pretty progressive to allow it (I would but most wouldn't allow something like Wandering Son because they don't want to talk about that stuff). And Azumanga has a lesbian thing going on, a pedo in in, lots of beer and other references to adult things. And girls in their underwear is more taboo than boys believe it or not. Azumanga is VERY adult. It is like I said... made for adult men.

You know what is funny? My husband loves GeroGero po opening and hates Yo-kai Watch feat. Swampy Marsh. And I like both. And I know actually about 10 adults, most of whom have children who LOVE Yokai Watch. And then yeah there is me and my husband who both like it. But I guess when you have had to watch children for YEARS knowing there is an appropriate anime around you can watch at familiy gatherings you can actually stand is a blessing. Between Yokai Watch and Little Witch Academia it definitely makes me feel better about life as an adult who does have to exist in a family unit a lot of the time. I am the oldest of 10. Trust me. Yokai Watch is 10x better than most things made for children.
And any family oriented anime fan actually LOVES Yokai watch from what I have seen. Yokai Watch might as well be Animaniacs to be honest. I noticed so many jokes kids didn't. haha. That Girls Gone Wild joke went right over their heads.

I was recommended Yokai Watch by my brother in law who has two children one 10 and one 14. So yeah. He is much older as an anime fan. And says he really loves Komasan. And i gotta agree. Komasan is so cute. But I also really love Katie. She reminds me of when I was a kid. And both his kids like it. The 10 year old daughter LOVES it. And I think seeing how much she loves it makes me happy as an anime fan.

I find series like Yokai Watch to be very important. Because as much as Digimon launched me into being a superfan of anime, I think Yokai Watch is going to be that same thing for a lot of kids. But not just that, as a Digimon fan and someone who LOVES yokai related shows, I just enjoy the Yokai.

Great Kakegurui anime review, but I don't think you rated it LOW enough. XD just kidding.
You're right though. I find the the characters almost an insult to humanity.
