Ergo Proxy

Within the domed city of Romdo lies one of the last human civilizations on Earth. Thousands of years ago, a global ecological catastrophe doomed the planet; now, life outside these domes is virtually impossible. To expedite mankind's recovery, "AutoReivs," humanoid-like robots, have been created to assist people in their day-to-day lives. However, AutoReivs have begun contracting an enigmatic disease called the "Cogito Virus," which grants them self-awareness. Re-l Mayer, the granddaughter of Romdo's ruler, is assigned to investigate this phenomenon alongside her AutoReiv partner, Iggy. But what begins as a routine investigation quickly spirals into a conspiracy as Re-l is confronted by humanity's darkest sins.

Elsewhere in Romdo, an AutoReiv specialist by the name of Vincent Law must also face his demons when surreal events begin occurring around him. Re-l, Iggy, Vincent, and the child AutoReiv named Pino will form an unlikely faction as they struggle to uncover Romdo's mysteries and discover the true purpose of the mythical beings called "Proxies."

good show nice ed op engaging story telling with great set of episodes in between

though after ep 20 its abrupt change makes me feel it was a bit rushed but they do such a good job in story explanation that you understand what is happening in the end that it creates a good plot

story explanation is the main problem with this genre which is great here it does a better job of story telling than darker than black in the end parts specially i don't want to spoil but it has some great episode in between some explain you the story some are just good ... villains with interesting set of abilities which create great ep which always has some hidden meaning to the plot

Great character development specially with Real ep16 is such a good ep which reminds me of cowboy bebop...

all n all it would have been better if this had more episodes other than that good anime ..until next time..bye...

Mixed Feelings

There's sparks of some really interesting world building and likeable characters in here, but it's bogged down by an unnecessarily confusing story and you'll be spending most of the time wondering wtf is going on. Like... I bet there's some people who think that makes a work more 'clever' but honestly if your audience is struggling to understand what you're saying maybe you're just not saying it that well? This isn't helped by near filler episodes that don't add much (if anything) to the plot beyond perhaps a tiny tip bit of information buried in more confusion. But the show did at least get me ... to watch the whole way through, and there were parts I enjoyed.

I'm pretty indifferent to Vincent but Pino is adorable, Re-L being so flawed kinda made me like her more (and it's something she improves on), and even Iggy was fun, and on the whole their dynamic works well. The supporting cast doesn't quite have the depth I was hoping for though. Daedalus's motivation turns out pretty shallow in the end, and Raul likewise fails to make a compelling player in the game. The other proxies we meet aren't all that intriguing either.

The world building is honestly the best part of the series - it's a unique imagining of a post apocalyptic world. Unfortunately our understanding of it is gleamed in small bits and pieces, and often distracted from by very strange episode choices (I'm looking at you random quiz show episode). I would have loved for a more detailed look at how the different bubbles work and how the proxies were made and such, and understanding these things would have made parts of the series feel less like a fever dream and like I could actually follow what was going on. Maybe for some people the intrigue is a good thing, but I think a balance need to be maintained and this is very much at one end of the spectrum where you're not going to have anywhere near the full picture until you've watched all the way through, and might even need some parts explained after that. Genuinely, the big picture is great and I can see what they were going for, but it doesn't hit when it takes so long to put together and you don't get time to appreciate it.

So, I can see the potential for a series I might have loved in here, but by the end I don't have any strong feelings about it one way or the other. It might be worth a watch if the premise intrigues you but be fully prepared to not understand what's going on half the time. If you like stories with clear direction/stakes then maybe pass.

Ergo Proxy has a lot of issues. It's hard to know where to start. One of the main problems is that it's too similar to Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Both stories are weak and are mainly there to distract from the flaws with dazzling visuals. It starts off well but quickly becomes tedious and slow. It tries too hard to be intelligent and ends up being annoying.

The first episode is excellent, and it looks amazing. It hooks you in, but unfortunately, the rest of the story is slow and doesn't have much momentum. There are too many episodes where one character just talks to ... themselves about their identity, and this drags on for too long. The plot is revealed in unrelated episodes, which is confusing. The ending raises more questions than answers.

The characters are not developed well enough. The relationships are explored, such as Vincent's struggles and his dynamic with Re-l, but they feel rushed. Pino provides comic relief, but her dialogue can be annoying.

The animation is the best part. It looks great, especially the cyberpunk and gothic elements. However, the characters' designs are inconsistent, which can be distracting, and the secondary male characters look too similar.

The soundtrack is unusual and fits the show's aesthetic, but it's repetitive, and the same few songs are played throughout.

Overall, Ergo Proxy is a disappointment. The first episode is good, but the rest is not worth watching. The animation and soundtrack are commendable, but the story and characters are weak.
