The Kessoku Band Live: Kousei event announced a compilation movie for the Bocchi the Rock! anime series on Sunday, revealing a key visual (pictured) and an announcement promo. The movie will open in theaters in Japan in Spring 2024.

The television anime produced by CloverWorks aired in 12 episodes in Fall 2022. Crunchyroll streamed the anime with subtitles.

Bocchi the Rock! adapts Aki Hamaji's 4-koma music comedy manga, which began serializing in Manga Time Kirara MAX in December 2017. Houbunsha shipped the fifth volume on November 26 last year. Bocchi the Rock! has a cumulative 2 million copies of its volumes in print, including the anthology.

Yen Press licensed the manga in English in April 2023. The first volume is planned for an October 17 release.

Synopsis
Yearning to make friends and perform live with a band, lonely and socially anxious Hitori "Bocchi" Gotou devotes her time to playing the guitar. On a fateful day, Bocchi meets the outgoing drummer Nijika Ijichi, who invites her to join Kessoku Band when their guitarist, Ikuyo Kita, flees before their first show. Soon after, Bocchi meets her final bandmate—the cool bassist Ryou Yamada.

Although their first performance together is subpar, the girls feel empowered by their shared love for music, and they are soon rejoined by Kita. Finding happiness in performing, Bocchi and her bandmates put their hearts into improving as musicians while making the most of their fleeting high school days. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Hopefully, this is all just to create some sort of path for a sequel!

Not instead of. A lot of recap movies are to lead up to more seasons. BTR has a pretty long production cycle so by the time S2 airs a lot of people will have forgotten what happened in S1 and could appreciate a refresher.

With Love Live they even aired 30 minute recaps of each season online for free to get people prepared for the movie sequel. An announcement of a recap is not a bad thing.
Also, apparetntly, the team responible for the series is also in helm of Bisque Doll, so they have to finish S2 for it first.
also to add, there are not enough source material for second season for near future, so made sense for anime producer to prolonged the sequel to made comfortable gap and enough content to adapt.

I thought this was new content for a moment :(

I'm little disappointed for recap movie but hope they will announce a season 2 at the end.

I am 99% percent certain the producers are milking the anime for all it's got until the staff is available to make season 2. The fact that it's even getting a compilation is at least them acknowledging that the demand is there.

Do you think they will work on the Doll first and then start thinking about the idea of a Bocchi sequel?

Saw "Bocchi the Rock" and then "compilation movie". From hype to utter disappointment in under 2 seconds. Ah well, at least it shows there's still some interest in the series so maybe we'll get a 2nd season eventually.

This looks like milking the cow to me. But then again this is business. Gonna milk some more money while the director is doing other projects while we wait for season 2.

I've heard there's another girls band anime coming, maybe that'll fill the gap while waiting.

Yeah, it’s a little disappointing to see that it’s just a recap film, but if it’s essentially meant to be a hold over until the director’s done with all his other projects and allows for a much-higher quality S2, I’m fine with this. Just a shame we’ll have to wait so long for original animated content. Guess I’ll just read more of the manga in the meantime.

A recap instead of season 2?

May 21, 2023 5:34 AM by Papa_Scorch

So it's going to be just a recap movie of S1 ?

May 21, 2023 5:25 AM by Marcus5768

Idk if it's to increase the fanbase and all but I'll likely skip it.  Anyways they have more time to make a 2nd and even 3rd season, with better quality.

The more content, the better

Overlord has a bunch of recap movies but also a bunch of seasons.

I hope this means more BTR projects in the future.

This is actually good.
A movie means the fanbase is likely to expand and the fact that this will give Umehara more time to work on s2 and even s3.

May 21, 2023 4:32 AM by DarkHumor04

I take the opportunity to thank Bocchi for introducing to me 88Kasyo Junrei .

I will most likely skip the recap though.

Gotta milk the cow dry till the last drop after all. Sigh...

Though this being recap is hilarious. Who watches them anyways.
