Synopsis

Yearning to make friends and perform live with a band, lonely and socially anxious Hitori "Bocchi" Gotou devotes her time to playing the guitar. On a fateful day, Bocchi meets the outgoing drummer Nijika Ijichi, who invites her to join Kessoku Band when their guitarist, Ikuyo Kita, flees before their first show. Soon after, Bocchi meets her final bandmate—the cool bassist Ryou Yamada.

Although their first performance together is subpar, the girls feel empowered by their shared love for music, and they are soon rejoined by Kita. Finding happiness in performing, Bocchi and her bandmates put their hearts into improving as musicians while making the most of their fleeting high school days.

Preliminary (5/12 eps)
I really wanted to like Bocchi The Rock!. I truly did. I genuinely enjoy the genre of "cute girls doing cute things while they're in a friend group performing some joint group activity". But what exactly does Bocchi bring to the table? I'm not exactly sure.

Sure, the character designs are not bad for how simple they are, but they're way too basic, especially considering how Cloverworks went fairly light with the animation compared to other shows like Dress Up Darling or Akebi-chan. If I wanted to watch cute girls with simple designs I'd just watch Do It Yourself! this season.

If I wanted to watch ...

It is simple, straight, clever, and original. The series performs a playful and thoughtful approach to social anxiety, delivering innovation and flawless timing. Bocchi the Rock is pitch-perfect.

** Spoilers marked below **

The story develops from the perspective of the main character, Hitori, who suffers from social anxiety. Preliminary (3/12 eps)
Believe or not, we may have the K-On! of this generation in your hands with Bocchi the Rock.

Story:

Like any slice-of-life and CGDCT anime, this one has a simple plot, but very relatable one (it's basically about a introvert girl trying to climb out of the cocoon through Rock, and her daily struggle to slowly overcome her social phobia). There is less music than expected yet (just 3 episodes), but it is still present.

Characters:

Slice-of-life usually don't have complex plots, so the recipe of the success is their characters, and they are very compelling in this show. Hitori, or Bocchi (such a cruel nickname...), is the type ...
