Hi, my name is Sebastian. I’m a 33 year old guy from Germany who apparently likes anime.
During my childhood I had very limited exposure to anime and I only vaguely remember bits and pieces of shows I most likely "accidently" came into contact with. These are the ones I recall: To be honest I never really got into any of them (the closest one probably being Pokemon) but I was definitely more into Western Animation. As a teenager I transitioned out of animated content almost entirely, with some exceptions like The Simpsons and Futurama. It wasn't until around my 24th birthday (2014) that my interest in animation resurfaced. The main reason was the fact that I spend a lot of time on the internet, which basically meant I was getting constantly bombarded with other people’s nostalgia. I realized a lot of those fond memories people were talking about happened to come from watching anime, which is why I suddenly got the impression that I missed out on certain aspects of the childhood TV experience. So I decided to actually sit down and watch two of the biggest anime franchises which were popular back then and still happen to be relevant today: Needless to say it took me quite a while to get through them but it was overall a neat experience and I enjoyed my time watching. I was certainly satisfied, however I didn't feel the need to immediately look for the next series to watch - I didn't exactly get "sucked in" to such an extent. Almost one and a half years later (at the end of 2015) I finally developed interest in another show. It was the one everyone already knew about. It was the one (almost) everyone had one of two rather polarizing opinions on. It was the one that especially nowadays apparently makes many people cringe and recoil in disgust through the mere mention of it. It was of course, Sword Art Online. Now my interest for this show stemmed from the fact that I’m a very passionate gamer. Video games are in fact my favorite hobby and they have been since the year 2000. So when I decided to look into this infamous “SAO” I absolutely loved the idea behind it and didn’t care for the mixed reception, I wanted to see it for myself. And that's where my true anime journey began. It's worth noting that even the "critique" part of my rating process is heavily influenced by my personal preferences and enjoyment. I'd never claim to be an actual critic, nor would I ever assume my scores to be in anyway objective. After finishing an anime, I do however like to sit down and try to review my experience with it in a bit more detailed manner than simply asking myself if I enjoyed my time with it or not. That's why I decided to actually set up different criteria and weight them according to my understanding of their importance. Nevertheless, what I call critique is simply complementary - something I do for fun and maybe to force myself to look at certain aspects of a show (positive and negative) somewhat more closely. Ultimately, my enjoyment still remains the most important factor, which is of course why some of my scores might seem higher, or in other cases lower than they would be if I seriously tried to be as least subjective as I could possibly be. |
