The wraparound band on the 77th and final volume of Hideaki Sorachi's adventure comedy manga Gintama announced a new anime film on Friday. Production on a new anime was announced at the franchise's Gintama Shirogane Matsuri 2019 (Kari) event in March.

The announcement marks the third film in the Gintama anime series. Information regarding the release date and content of the film will be announced at a later time.

Gintama began serialization in 2003 and ended its run in Weekly Shounen Jump in September 2018. The manga subsequently transferred to Jump GIGA for three consecutive issues before making another switch to the official Gintama application and concluding on June 20. Shueisha published the 76th volume on January 4.

Prior to receiving a full anime series, a special episode produced by Sunrise was featured at the Jump Festa Anime Tour in September 2005. The first anime season premiered in Spring 2006 and ran for 201 episodes until Winter 2010, followed by six more seasons airing between 2011 and 2018. The manga also inspired two anime films that opened in 2010 and 2013, among several original video animations.

A live-action film adaptation produced by Warner Bros. Pictures opened in Japan in July 2017, grossing over 4.6 billion yen. A sequel film premiered in August 2018. The first film screened in the United States and Canada last January, and was subsequently released on Blu-ray and DVD in March of the same year.

Sentai Filmworks released the first 49 episodes and the first anime film between 2010 and 2012 on DVD and Blu-ray discs, respectively. Crunchyroll re-licensed the anime series and released episodes 266-291 through Funimation in March 2018. The second part of the release containing episodes 292-316 shipped on September 25 last year.

VIZ Media began publishing the series in English under its Shounen Jump Advanced imprint in 2007 before the release was discontinued with the 23rd volume in 2011. The manga has also been localized in multiple foreign languages.

Should be a solid 10 episodes instead of movie, pretty sure they will cut some source material.

Which one is better, team anime (sugita, sakaguchi and riekugi) or team live action (oguri, philip and kanna) ?

Question for the manga readers, is a movie enough to finish the storyline?

Yes. A movie will be more than enough.

*Also, wait for a grandstand finale. One of those extremely rare manga that ended in an extraordinarily high note despite of being a long running series.*

Gintama has been getting a lot of love in Japan after it ended. Sorachi-sensei once said you realize how something meant to you once you lose it. Very fitting for Gintama.

If you understand what those ❤ 130.5K in just about 10h of tweeting mean, you know how much love it is getting. The final three chapters were extremely well received in Japan.

Thanks for that, it's great to see it ended on a high.
I'll be looking forward to it!

Great news I can't wait.

Makes sense to do a movie, rather than a TV series. There's only 8-9 episodes worth of content to adapt, and it can all be done in a movie, as long as it's 2.5 hours long.

Probably a smart move honestly, though i do kind of feel robbed of seeing the episode discussions week by week but oh well. the only real downside is its gonna be a while till alot of us actually see it given we need to wait till its out of theaters and on blu-ray, then for someone to sub it

Yeah agreed there, mostly the wait is gonna kill me especially when the Japanese are gonna be able to experience it no problem ;_;

it can though there may be some worry of stuff getting cut here and there, alot of the final chapters are pretty action heavy and one of the longest chapters being the penultimate chapter, which without spoiling things, can be done in a few minutes cause its mostly just being artsy

Actually the last few chapters had quite a bit of dialogue, in some cases a lot, I went through the trouble of trying to count the amount(not exact, but an estimation) compared to previous chapters(multiple 20 pages ones in comparison to the GIGA/App chapters), even chapter 703 which had a lot of action would probably take around 15 minutes to adapt.

It's pretty much confirmed that this will adapt the remaining content of the Manga(the teaser from March is content from the movie as well), if they adapt everything in the movie it's gonna be a bit rushed(not as much as people are expecting though, and there's a lot of content that could be shortened without losing much honestly), OR I can see them doing a 4-episode special of some sort that adapts the rest of the Shounen Jump chapters to promote the movie, and then the movie can just cover the Jump GIGA + App chapters, that would be the ideal scenario.

Finally a news about Gintama, I'm fine with a movie just let Sunrise and Yoichi Fujita handle it.

Hopefully it premiers in my country too.
