Love live is popular only among otaku in Japanese definition of the word otaku
and most people don't know its existence for sure but it certainly have big fanbase
Love Live is massively popular in Japan and surrounding Asian countries in general, not just strictly with otaku. I assure you plenty of people over there know of it's existence since it makes the regular news beat more often than one might think. It's not so popular in Western territories because they don't really have an idol scene. It's pretty much the most explosively popular new original anime franchise this decade along with Madoka Magica and unlike Madoka Magica it's actually been built with the intent of being a more long lasting multimedia franchise in mind instead of something that was written as one complete work that just got popular and as a result now sees it's creators struggling to find ways to continue exploiting and make new content out of with questionable results. Also sucks that Madoka Magica is SHAFT animated series that relies on freelance animators like Gekidan Inu Curry and the studios own horrendous sense of scheduling and consistency in order for there to be a chance at more product whereas Love Live is by Sunrise which is apparently going to be able to get the movie out in time for Spring 2015. It'll be hilarious if it's just that much better animated than movies that have taken several times as long and about as many man hours to produce.
Love Live is very popular among otaku in Japan and not much known to non-otaku population that is how we use the word otaku.Otaku does not necessarily mean anime obsessed fat hikikomori/neet people.
I think you are over estimating how-well known it is because you live in near akihabara if I remember correctly which is by no means place where you can find average Japanese opinion.
this is time slot for love live 2
tokyo mx pm 10:30-11:00
aichi ch am1:35 - 2:05
sun tv am 2:29 - 2:59
Business business satellite 0:00-0:30
Many of them are not major ch but minor local ch or BS and even on them they don't get prime time slot except in tokyo.
It is like airing only in
NY ch that air NY and some parts of surrounding states(pm10:30-11:00)
Los Angeles and California ch(am2:29 - 2:59)
Washington, D.C.ch (am1:35 - 2:05)
Business satellite(am0:00-0:30)
I live one of the few places where love live air terrestrial broadcasting ch which means love live anime friendly area but little presence here.
That being said, I can agree with you depends on your definition of massively popular because it has certainly many notorious otaku fans that buy several copies of same CD/BD for the sake of suku-fes and Live concert.

17k is actually not that good sales espesially Love Live and Light Novel both are mainly popular in otaku community
Well i'd expect it to reach 40k eventually. I mean the previous school idol diary which contained the more popular Maki x Nico duo ended up selling only 20k in the 1st week, but is now at 40k by Sep 28th (with possibly 50k by the end of October when the monthly rankings are out).
You'd be surprised how many female Love Live! fans (typically in their 20s and 30s) there are. Especially in the mobage, where a lot of the big spenders are actually female players! Symbv plays the Chinese version and has met a lot of female players in game. There are quite a number of female players of the English game too as evident in the dedicated MAL thread here (http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=635035&show=1680). And then I play the Japanese version of the game, and have also met my fair share of big female spenders in game. There is also a Korean version, but we don't know anyone around here who actually plays it.
Besides, the big sales are for the CD releases, concert BD/DVD, anime BD/DVD, and the mobage (Sukufesu singlehandedly brought Klab Games out of the red). I have been tracking the CD/BD/DVD sales for Love Live! since April:
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1156141&show=0#msg30226161
Best Live collection album has almost reached 100k at Oricon, after charting for a record 95 weeks in a row since it was released in 2013. The 2nd Season OP single reached 100k a few weeks ago, with the mobage theme song single coming agonising close at almost 98k. These 3 singles however had achieved gold status a long time ago (as they obviously reached shipment numbers of 100k much earlier due to Oricon numbers representing only 30,000 stores in Japan).

Drifters Ultimate - anime when? :O
*1. 297,925 298,377 Drifters Vol.4
Breaking 100K+, someone take the rights from sunrise and do a season 2 already :(
20. *5,360 100,496 Accel World Vol.17
Don't do this. Sunrise Studio 8 is about one of the only reasons it turned out good at all since they actually put the effort into making the most of it, same as with Horizon. Yes it sucks that it's almost impossible to get them to actually do an adaptation anymore since they prefer to generate their own in house content and are pretty much one of the only remaining studios that doesn't actually need to rely on other media to sustain itself (honestly I can't think of any other active studio off the top of my head that has a higher number of original titles to adaptations...maybe I.G and Bones come close) but I'd rather remain patient and hopefully see it continued with the same staff and effort level put into it if it's going to continue getting adapted then to see some second rate studio pick it up and wing it.
Incidentally speaking of Sunrise Love Live continues to be a pretty ridiculous phenomenon. Is there any format it hasn't dominated in some capacity at some point this year? I heard the PSVita game didn't do so well, though that might just be because it was kind of legitimately bad or so I hear, but that doesn't really matter when the cell phone game is gaining a million followers every couple months.

Someone didn't like what happened in volume 71, huh? (Yes, I know it's only been sold for a short time)
Hope Naruto gets a nice ending boost. It would be crazy to see the final volume sell more than a OP volume.
There's no logical reason for that to happen.
I wouldn't be comparing Tokyo Ghoul to Nanatsu no Taizai while the latter is still airing its first episodes. Wait a few weeks or months.
