A TV anime adaptation of Iori Miyazawa's sci-fi yuri novel series Urasekai Picnic (Otherside Picnic) was announced by Hayakawa Shobo on Thursday.

Synopsis
Her first encounter with Toriko Nishina was on the Otherside after seeing "that thing" and nearly dying. Ever since that day, exhausted university student Sorawo Kamikoshi's life changed. In this Otherworld, full of mystery, which exists alongside our own, dangerous beings like the Kunekune and Hasshaku-sama that are spoken of in real ghost stories appear. For research, for profit, and to find an important person, Toriko and Sorao set foot into the abnormal.

Cast
Sorao Kamikoshi: Yumiri Hanamori (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!)
Toriko Nishina: Ai Kayano (Chihayafuru 3)

Felix Film and LIDENFILMS are co-producing the anime series, with Takuya Satou (Fragtime, Asagao to Kase-san.) handling both the direction and series composition.

Miyazawa published the first volume in February 2017 with illustrations by shirikaba. Hayakawa Bunko shipped the fourth volume in December 2019. Eita Mizuno began serializing a manga adaptation in monthly Shounen Gangan magazine in February 2018. Square Enix will publish the fourth compiled volume on March 12.

J-Novel Club licensed the novel in English last July for digital release. The third volume is planned for an April 12 release.

A one-minute promotional video was released on December 18 last year commemorating the release of the fourth volume. The video used a combination of both animation and live action footage

Finally, we got some yuri! Yay!

Just hope it'd be something wholesome and cute, with no rapey moments.

It feels like people are interested not so much in the work itself as in what it will be yuri. Classic. In any case, last year this LN got a pretty big hype, it will be interesting to see. Especially because of the author’s love for the Strugatsky.

I mean it's a 'Yuri-work,' so being interested in the 'Yuri' means being into one of the major appeals of the show, though I have to agree that it seems a bit too much focused on that specifically, instead of the Sci-Fi aspect that makes it a much more unique series to get invested into, due to the potential of the setting.

It's not about how much yuri is in this work. This is definitely yuri, whose author even gave semi-insane lectures on trends in the genre, lol.

It just annoys me that people turned yuri into a fetish, belonging to which is more important to them than the work itself. When I see the announcement of a new adaptation, I expect that people will discuss the potential of the show, the plot of the original work or their opinion about the future anime, and not just masturbate that it will be a certain genre.

This disgusts me. This tries to shake my faith into the Japanese. But it fails miserably, although I did feel this little pathetic nick.

Why are you so sure? The author is clearly not a stupid fanboy, the work is quite popular in the West. I would not be surprised if the decision about anime was made not least because of an eye on hype in the USA.

Don't worry, I did understand your point, and agree with it, I just wanted to enter my response with a cunning remark.

Well, personally, I most of all hope that this will be a full-fledged lesbian romance, and not the idiotic teasing. When even official yuri become like that, it kills my faith in the industry.

This must be a dream come true, finally the yuri could compete with conventional light novels and not only in sleeves and manhwas

The author did a long interview talking about his story and how the yuri was important to him.
We will win

It's one of the really few genuinely good LNs i've read recently. But even setting aside how LN adaptations usually go, Urasekai is extremely tricky to properly translate to a visual medium, so I'm setting my expectations really low.

Oh, and two volumes in, yuri is still present in trace amounts.

Yori is one of those people who add to yuri even just a close interaction of female characters. For some reason, modern Japanese people like to call yuri any interaction between female characters, even if they are canonically straight. But as far as I read, MC is canonically attracted to the second girl. Or not?

While I heard the yuri is less emphasized than a usual yuri manga, I still want to check it out, it's sure to have decent action.

I'm actually already interested to reading its novel since I've heard a good amount of praise to it.

But I change my mind, now I think I want to see the anime first.

Combining yuri with sci-fi is a bit unusual and that in itself piques my curiosity about the story; and the promotial video, though not giving much away, seems interesting, but that girl in high school uniform holding that big assault rifle makes me a bit worried that it won't be much more than a "cute girls with guns" story.

PS. Reading the comments below the article gives me hope that it will be something worthy of putting in my plan to watch list.

I'm more interested into sci-fi elements than yuri, though I still welcome it.

I'm just wondering how it'll turn out by the end of it all.

I thought of Roadside Picnic when watching the trailer then saw your comment about the Stugatsky influence. Sounds interesting!

Judging by the comments on any yuri or potential yuri, nothing matters. Only a fetish.

Well, the author has rather specific tastes, but everywhere I saw only positive news about this. Iori is quite respected as an LN author.

Takeya Satou's directing his third yuri anime in the past three years. He seems to have some sort of passion for the sub-genre. If Satou pulls this off, I'm firmly stanning this man.

The LN/manga series is good. It is based on the Otherside not from Yuri. But you will see a developed feelings along the way (Volume 4 of LN already has a lot romance but in Volume 5 hopefully not) but I still recommended it to the people who dislikes Yuri and give this a chance because the story is good and interesting and also, the MC is an introvert and quite heartless so it will make it interesting and her thinking is realistic. Hopefully there are no skipping scenes in the anime from LN. And yeah I clicked this because it's Yuri but I really liked this even IF I'm not into Yuri. (This is the very first LN I ever read anyway so it's that good for me)
