If yes, what was the craziest place you visited there?

Once or twice. Nothing too useful there. Just a teenage curiosity.

Nope. But I have used Tor for quite sometime around 2013 or something. I don't find the Deep Web to be interesting because it's mostly fraudulent anyway.

Yes I visited the deep web you talk about, now I am dead and my kidneys are on some street market in Shanghai.

No There is noting of interest for me there.
It is mostly used for illegal activities I recommend avoiding it all together unless you want to get a virus or be put on some kind of a list.

I weirdly have Tor on my laptop, originally downloaded it for that purpose, and use it on an occasional basis for general browsing. But crap came up and now I no longer care for process.

If I ever decide to browse the dark web, I would prefer to do it via a VM rather than my actual host machine (for system security reasons). But, motivation hasn't been my friend these past few months.

I wouldn't use a VM, but rather a dedicated device with a non-Intel CPU and a restrictive Unix-system that can be easily physically destroyed afterwards in either a public place or in a random company, set in a DMZ with at least two hardware firewalls and if possible, in a completely different country with a VPN that is set up to another company which itself takes a VPN from another source and so on, and so forth...

Oh and not in a country that is part of the 14-eyes, China, Russia, India, North Korea, South Korea, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and other pseudo-neutral countries, and so on, and so forth...

In short: I'm so distrusting of my real IP not being leaked from TOR and of the sandboxed VM not being exploited that I don't have any intention to even try it out at home.

Exactly. Curiosity killed the cat. Even outside of the malware and being in the focus of government agencies, I wouldn't recommend it, since there might be content there that can leave people with mental scars and/or desensitize them to violence and other things.

@2ego @babecobop1 @Bakchos @DavidAlejandro @dizzyur @HungryForQuality @majokkotrash @NiTech @Noboru @Orhunaa @Thanakos @Xstasy @Yarub

The deep web is simply all pages on the Internet not indexed by search engines. All of us have visited it.

When you check your email, log in to your bank account, and so on, you are accessing the deep web. Some sources say it accounts for 96% of the Internet, making the surface web (any page indexed by search engines) only 4%.

What we are actually talking about in this thread is the dark web: a small part of the deep web basically consisting of encrypted/hidden web pages accessible only through special browsers like Tor. Even then, most of it does not involve illegal activity. Those are just the types of things you hear about more often because it's sensationalist.

I have not visited the dark web, but have watched countless videos about it on YouTube. They were both educational and terrifying.

I thought OP was talking about the dark web when asking such a question. Wouldn't make for much of a discussion if he was asking about the deep web after all. What would be the point if that was the case?

A lot of people confuse deep web and dark web. Deep web is just stuff you can't find with search engines. Dark web is stuff you need to access through a special means beyond a normal web connection alone. Not all the deep web is dark web and not all dark web is deep web.

Pretty sure that's public knowledge for anyone visiting it.

I said all that because the OP asked about the deep web, not the dark web specifically, and many don't know the difference.

2ego said:
Visiting it without knowing it doesn't imply you're "visiting" it, the thread is about an entirely different thing.

Visiting a web page simply constitutes going there in a browser. Your level of knowledge of what you are visiting is not relevant.

I think some are indexed or even if they aren't they aren't hard to find because they may be linked on the clear net version of a site which is indexed.

Used it a few times to talk with Chinese political dissidents. People who really want freedom over there. They are quite the honorable and lovely bunch.

@SadMadoka: Thank you for the clarification; I wasn't paying attention to the difference, but rather treated "deep web" as a synonym to "dark web". In my posting, I was referring to the later rather than to the non-indexed web in general. Though as traed pointed out, some sites on the "dark web" might be at least indirectly indexed.

I imagine it has webpages that can longer be found and cluttered with random articles and papers. Fna pages with pics--like a p2p thing with too much gutter to care and one nasty section everyone keeps describing.

I'd try it if I could.

Tor is not the dark web per se. You can access normal sites through it as well. My brother uses it for security reasons. It takes so long to load due to the heavy encryption.

Yes, from my own curiosity before it went mainstream.
I used to explore the deep web and see how deep can i reach.
most of them just illegal sites that everyone expects but interestingly i also manage to find other stuff like weird puzzles, weeb things, etc. which is might be completely meaningless yet fun to explore.

Yes. It's a barren wasteland, unless you have very specific interests. Are you into drugs or child porn? Well, it's not like you can get much out of it regardless without having participated in that culture. Clearly, no one likes to risk their livelihoods for some altruistic mission. I've talked to some collectors who would only show me "the good shit" if I had something to trade. Obviously, I did not. Want drugs? First you have to sign up for a crypto account and send transactions to who knows where. But that's not even the sketchiest part. You need to scout your neighborhood for mailboxes that no one uses so you can get your drugs shipped to someone else's house, and then steal them from your neighbors, which apparently beats the FBI stealing them from you before arresting you. A lot of people have BTC these days, but a spare mailbox? If you nodded your head, you know exactly what you're doing.

I used a tor2web (website that lets you go to .onion URLs in a standard browser) to see a directory with porn you could find anywhere else. But I wanted to see whoever hosted it's specific taste in porn.

And that was it.

The closest I've probably ever come is when curiosity led me to have a look at r/watchpeopledie (before it was banned, that is). I thought the name was metaphorical. Yeah, it wasn't. It may have been one of the most unsettling experiences of my life but at least now I know what would happen if I got sucked into an industrial printing press.

I think neither the creator nor most of the people know what "deep web" refer to (as the question "access" the deep web is strange to those who knows what the deep web is).

Deep web refers to unlisted servers. Since I had a friend that created temporarily unlisted server to exchange files with me, yes, I have accessed "deep web".

If we talk about anonymous networks like Tоr, yes, I use it, since in my current country the pirаtе bау is blocked or tracked. Also, after extensive search I found onion that had decent amount of songs to download.

As for whether you can catch virus, it depends on what you are doing and how you setup the computer environment you are using. Since tor comes with pre-built script block (not ad blocker), it is relatively safe to access it both under windows and linux and as long as you download only data files (not executable) you are safe (against viruses). If you know what you are doing, it is pretty okay.

But the deep web is pretty boring. Since the idea of those servers to be unlisted, you cannot contact them if you do not know their exact address and port. You do not put an service on the dark web to be publicly popular (like facebook, gmail, MAL, etc), you put such server to contact specific group of people you know (usually ones you communicate through PGP emails). If you put an address to deep web on a normal website, it could be clearly linked to you (which undermines the reason you would use deep web). As such there are very few decent services in the deep web. For example, the pirаtе bау is such service, but its onion address is not shared by other people, not the owner. Therefore, there is almost nothing to see in the "deep web".

Deep web is ANY content that's unlisted.

If you put something in spoiler tags on MAL, that's the deep web. Search engines can't see what's in spoiler tags.
