Welp, I'm sold for this series. Might even be contender for AotS for me if the direction and quality maintains this level of spectacle. After seeing that running scene, we can pretty much be sure that animation is gonna be top-notch, especially for a slice-of-life series. Characters are memorable and more importantly, realistic, and the show manages to set a tone incredibly well using its visuals and music.

I can't wait to see what else this series is going to offer.

I love, love, LOVE this show. I can't remember the last time I smiled and laughed throughout an episode like this. The running scene, especially. When Mari felt that all that fear and motion were actually fun, I cried a little, because I'll soon be moving out of the country indefinitely and I've never even moved out of my city! So all that anxiety and anticipation really talked to me. Also the character presentation on this show is one of the best ones I've ever seen. Episode 2 and I already know who they are! This is so much fun to watch, I hope it only grows with the season. 10/10

It was a fun episode. I don't really get why they ran other than for the fun of it, but I guess I'm in the minority in that I felt the chase scene was a bit long and silly. Even if the kids kept running, logical adults wouldn't have chased them down like that. Bit odd to me. But still a fun episode in a fun show. Faces are still awkward to me, especially the smiles lol.

Not a big fan of the theme songs but the insert song was really nice, again. Glad Yuka Iguchi's character finally joined the party and it looks like Saori Hayami's character will join the party next week.

-sure there is no way that nothing bad happens when they let civilians on a trip that usually required trained people
-alright i chuckled at mari reading the article about the expedition
-speaking of which the whole thing seems super sketch
-hey it's shopkeeper-chan
-wait does she have photographic memory? she seemed to remember mari's nickname and the antarctica stuff
-i like this hinata girl already
-maybe it's not photographic memory and hinata's just a stalker
-did shirase's mom die in childbirth
-oh no, unless shirase's 3 years old
-the only segment of the shinjuku portion of this episode that i enjoyed was the whole running sequence but even then it felt kinda... out of place for some reason
-the scene at the restaurant felt even more out of place
-hinata's actually kinda loud

So basically the only thing this episode has done for me is made my anticipation of Antarctica greater, but not exactly in a positive way. I blame all the blue-balling about the expedition. One thing that stood out to me in the previous episode was the atmosphere of Mari's school. The way that the atmosphere was setup within the school in episode 1 seemed like they could definitely do the same for Antarctica. Unfortunately the atmosphere of the more urban environments doesn't seem as unique as the cozy little school, and because of that there wasn't really any wow factor inherent in the Shinjuku section. The character focus was shifted, it seems like, from Mari to Hinata in this episode. While I was a fan of Hinata's introduction, as the episode went on it seemed like she was a bit too loud for my liking. Her spunkiness is pretty great in moderation. Mari was probably my favorite part of the first episode but somehow she doesn't seem as endearing of a character in this episode, although she's still getting into hijinks.

In regards to the chase scene, it had to it the same feeling of whimsy that the OP had, and I think that's a good thing for this show to be doing. However, Mari's whole monologue about blooming youth or whatever seemed really premature to me, especially since they haven't even started to go on a journey yet. The thematic message of the scene would probably make sense if the whole draw of this show was how the main cast never ends up going to Antarctica because of all the red tape surrounding it. It just seemed like a whole "the true treasure was the journey" types of thing. Perhaps this is a sign that I should probably only be watching for the hijinks and not for the SoL in Antarctica component of the show. At least while everyone's still trying to prepare for departure.

TL;DR Hinata seems interesting in moderation and chase scene was fun but uncharacteristic what I'm anticipating from the show.

I actually looked up prices for flights between Tokyo and Perth (Fremantle is Perth's port so you can't fly directly there) and surprisingly it's expensive as hell! It's funny because to fly from Melbourne or Sydney to Tokyo are much MUCH cheaper. Maybe cause it's on the other side of the country or direct, or maybe Japan Airlines charges up the butt, who knows.

Secondly, when I saw Kabuchiko and its skyline the first and only thing that was in my head was Yakuza. DAMN YOU KAZUMA KIRYU!

The girl at the end on the train who I presume is the fourth girl in the main cast and will probably be introduced next episode? She's a real cutie. Not as hot as Shirase, but still she's pretty kawaii ^_^

Also, DAMN Hinata you are FAST!

They should have taken the hospitality job. Lol Shirase. This anime's going to need a comedy tag.

I was expecting that they would take the ship from Japan straight to Antarctica, but it looks like they'll be taking a shortcut to Fremantle instead. How disappointing, but oh well. If it gets them faster to the continent...

Two new girls to be part of the expedition. And it looks like they have a background similar to Shirase.

I guess this episode was to introduce Hinata. Super Genki and shares quite a bit with Mari. And next episode will be the 4th girl that we saw at the end of the episode (Yuzuki). If this anime looks to have these girls follow certain tropes, then I'm going to guess that the 4th girl is going to be pretty wealthy...

The animation is great, but one thing that really stands out and is rather irritating to look at are the white outlines around the characters. They stick out like a sore thumb. I hope this doesn't become as apparent when they reach Antarctica...

Such an adorable episode. Really loved the character interactions between Tamaki and Miyake.

God this show is beautiful, lots of the time I miss the subtitles because I was looking at the cute character designs or the cozy backgrounds.

This forth girl looks like she'll be the shy one in the group, let's hope she's as cute as the others (I betting she will be)

Certainly an enjoyable episode, but the pacing makes me worried, unless they're going to pull out a split cour announcement or something. It works well for the show, but there's no way they're going to resolve the story satisfactorily in 13 episodes at this kind of pace.

Very enjoyable episode again!

But as a person that plans to go to Antarctica...I can't help but think they really complicate it. It's not that hard to go to Antarctica (as a tourist) if you have the money. And Shirase has them (maybe needs a bit more for flight+other expanses to Argentina+the cruise). I know that she probably wants to go to specific base camp because of her mom situation but...If she wanna go for a state expedition, she can go study for relevant degree at an university. You can also apply for a job there. She can do all three!

Yeah ok, it's anime...they need plot.

And Hinata joins the group. I'm surprised Kimari hasn't told her mom about it. Hinata is pretty cool character, a bit like Kimari personality wise since both are quite the lively type. And I like how Kimari sounds, it kinda just stuck to me.

Shirase telling them stories to Mari and Hinata lol
Turns out the girls chasing them were pretty chill. Although who carries that much money on them, 1 million yen.

I still don't know if I like it or not. I found the story to be interesting, the whole Antarctica thing, at least from the summary of it, but so far, the plot hasn't been captivating or have any hooker that grabs at me to keep watching. I guess that's because they're busy adding members to the group but still...I don't know.

MADHOUSE is really pouring the love. So far, in my opinion, out of all the shows they're handling this season, this one takes the cake. The characters are just so charming and the story is inspiring. A couple of times it made me want to go on a outrageous journey myself.

If it continues like this, this show might very well be AOTS.

Shirase's a bit too unrealistically temperamental.

Hinata's a good balance act, chemistry and atmosphere between the girls are better after her introduction cos IMO Mari and Shirase didn't gel well

Second half was puzzling. Why do they even run? Why do the women try to catch them? Why do the women assume an authority position when they're literally nothing atm to the girls? Why did Shirase try to hide from them, when she was going to meet them anyway IF the (stupid af)'plan' succeeds? Why didn't Shirase just do exactly the things she did after running at the spot? Can anyone explain?

Actually I think it's the other way around. Shirase and Mari did have good chemistry in the first episode, but the introduction of Hinata threw that dynamic out of the windows. Hinata and Mari make a good pair but Shirase comes off as the odd one out in their group now.

Lanz said:

Shirase's plan was to get a male member to stow them away. She probably didn't want to meet those female members until they were on the ship and was too late to kick them out.

Both women were friends of Shirase's mother. They obviously knew of Shirase's desire to go to Antarctica, and didn't approve. Shirase knew that once they saw her, they would put a stop to any attempt to convince other members of the expedition to let the girls go along.

I love how Hinata is just as Genki as Mari, but doesn't get distracted by shiny things any where near as easily as Mari does. I kind of expected her to act this way, since her profile picture shows her in the "hands behind the head" pose that usually indicates an outgoing and adventurous personality (think Natsume form Konohana Kitan).

Mari is quick to welcome Hinata to the group, but Shirase seems a bit less open to the idea. This has been "her thing" for so long that it's hard for her to rely on others. I think now she realizes that she doesn't have all the answers needed to make her dream happen, and she needs a team behind her to reach her goal.

However, it looks like Hinata has no intention of being "behind" anyone, and will probably end up the de-facto leader of the group.

Well yes, but they clearly already saw her, which puts any hope she had of 'seducing' the men, leaving only the grovelling option, and still she runs. Felt a bit pointless to me.

Hit the nail on the head in terms of my own feelings.

While I feel like the tension of this show is lost a bit due to the nature of the opening (they're already there), it's still taking some interesting twists and turns that make me want to watch more. It might ultimately just be a CGDCT show, but it's hitting all the right marks for me and is giving me those same "sleeper hit" vibes I got from Net-juu last season.

I love the animation and the design on this anime!

My only problem with it is the plan of going to Antarctica itself.

The thing is, they can actually go to Antarctica already even if they're not part of the research expedition. They can just go as a tourist on a cruise ship (which departs from anywhere; they do not need to be bound to this Japan ship) and her 1M yen can already cover for 2 of them. And cruises can go for as long as a month. So they really can just go (with a guardian I guess, 'cause they're minors).

But I guess, she wants to stay there a long time? Then yeah that's a problem because how about school? And they don't allow middle schoolers on researcher stations anyway, that's just absurd. But obviously with how this show is heading, the guys on the expedition will just throw safety measures and Antarctic treaties and just be like: OH U GIRLS ARE KYOOT, HOP ON THE SHIP WITH US , WE TAKE CARE OF YOU GUYS!

PS. But yeah I probably will still watch it despite it.

This episode took off all the questions that I had after the first episode. Therefore, I praise the authors for their serious approach and the fact that they showed not only naked idealism, but also problems that may arise on this way. And of course, I enjoyed the second half of the episode, it was extremely funny.

@iAmAileenCom I know that the Japanese media is pretty light, but I doubt that the show will allow itself the message "hello, young girls! Do not be afraid to seduce men if you want something from them!". This is obviously toxic.

No, I'm not talking about seducing, not at all.
I'm just poking fun at the absurdity of how these girls have "plot armor" because they can basically have the not-so-realistic chance of going on this experience when technically it's not that easy.

P.S. I went on an Antarctic expedition myself and I've also learned how researchers there come and go. So amidst the "moe" in this anime, I'm seriously questioning the plot is all.
