So, I'm not sure if this is the best page to ask this on, however, I require the assistance of someone who actually has a clue or two about Gundam, please. To date, I've only watched (as far as my memory serves me) MSG IBO, both seasons during their original broadcast. I've now taken an interest in the series and want to watch it all but have decided to start with UC as it would probably be both more convenient and easy plus make more sense in the long run. I scowered the internet only to find a few things: 1) Watch MSG The Origin after all other UC series, 2) Watch MSG The Origin before 0079 and all other UC series.
I'm slightly confused because some people are saying it is before the events of 0079 and others tell me it's during those events, I've also heard it's about the past while others told me it's a retelling. Dated or not, doesn't matter to me since I'm going to watch it all at some point, the same can also be said about any skippable content or whatever have you. And so, I'd like to know whether I should start with this before 0079 or if I should watch 0079 then this or save it until after all of UC. I'm probably going to watch the 3 original movies immediately after 0079, as well. Any advice so I can start this trek?
I found this link to a UC Gundam chart on another page here earlier today, though it was slightly confusing for me: http://i.imgur.com/L8NkDFf.jpg
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is the wrong topic for the aforementioned.

@Twileska

You're in luck. I can help you navigate the Universal Century Gundam shows and timeline.

For you first question, I suggest watching "The Origin" after you've watched "MSG". The Origin introduces a lot of characters (mostly supporting characters), plots and sub-plots, that don't matter until the main MSG series/movies. So, a lot of the references and callbacks the Origin is trying to make will go right over your head, if you don't know what the significance is. Personally, I'd skip the Origin all together. It's not retelling the manga adaption of the MSG anime. It's mainly telling the flashbacks of Char (which leads to a lot of Char wank), and it's mostly unnecessary.

As to the watch order, I suggest watching the shows in timeline order. Rather watching in release order. Since the UC is has so many side stories, midquels and sequels added to it.

Here the list by UC year.

0079

Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) - 42 episode anime or 3 compilation movies.

08th MS Team (1995) - 12 episode ova. Takes place alongside MSG, but mainly on Earth. There is overlap for several episode. Example, episode 1 of 08th MS takes place during episode 11 of the MSG. Also, episode 7 of 08th MS takes place after episode 24 of MSG.

0080 War in the Pocket (1989) - 6 episode ova. Takes place during the last week of the One Year War on a neutral colony. The main cast of MSG had visited during their journey.

0083

0083 Stardust Memory (1991) - 13 episode OVA. Sequel to the events of MSG and prequel to the events of Zeta Gundam.

0087

Zeta Gundam (1985) - 50 episode anime series. The first true sequel to MSG.

0093

Char's Counterattack (1988) - A movies that draws a conclusion of Char and Amuro's rivalry.

0096

Gundam Unicorn (2010) - 7 episode sequel to the events of Char's Counterattack and meant to bookend the main UC events that started in MSG.

That's pretty much all you'll need to understand the UC.

Things I didn't list, are things you can skip and or, come back to later. They're not necessary.

0068-0079 - The Origin - Like I said, unnecessary. More about Char flashbacks, than retelling and updating the 1979 anime, with modern animation styles and CGI.

0079 - MSG IGLOO (2004) - 3 CGI shorts from Zeon's perspective at the start of the OYW. These range from ok, to down right bad.

0079 - Thunderbolt (2015) - Ongoing, but really nothing special. Lots of mech porn, but no likeable characters and a pretty weak story.

0088 - Gundam ZZ (1986) - A sequel to Zeta in name only. The series tried to take a more comedic route and ended up falling on it's face. Nothing of consequence happens in the show and except for 1 character, it's never referenced by any of the following shows.

0121- Gundam F91 (1991) - Meant to be a soft reboot of the franchise, but things didn't pan out that way. Some of this movie's thunder was stolen by the aforementioned Stardust Memory. Worth one watch.

0151 - Victory Gundam (1993) - Another soft reboot, after F91 didn't work. Victory was Tominio's attempt to kill the franchise, or make it as toxic as he could. The show isn't very memorable and it's really mean spirited and down right insane at times.

Maybe but its is fun and deepens the knowledge about zeonisme and other UC lore.

MSG IGLOO (2004) - 3 CGI shorts

There are 9 regular size episodes in total. The first 6 are from Zeon's POV and they seem episodic but form an arc about the main charters (even has love story).
The last 3 are from Federation's POV.
This anime gave me some inside for the One Year War, also massive references to the UC (like operation Odessa).
Yes, kind of ugly and primitive looking CGI but passable.

0079 - Thunderbolt (2015) - Ongoing, but really nothing special.

It is really beautiful and in the same time brutal. Great action and mecha porn, countless UC references. Some info about the Zeon remnants you can't get from War in the Pocket or Stardust Memory.

0151 - Victory Gundam (1993)

It is lame and messy bit is kind of recommendable for watching before Gundam: G no Reconguista.

Also I like Gundam ZZ because it is moronic fun and also concludes the story about Haman Karn's rebel from Zeta.

The biggest problem with The Origin is that the was the anime unfolds, it assumes the viewer has already watched MSG. And that the viewer will get and appreciate all the references, subplots that unfold in MSG and cameo appearances of major and minor players in MSG. It's a prequel that's for people who are already fans of the show. Not a modern day retelling of the original show, like the manga is.

Eh, it's ok. The manga is the same way. Getting cute with the continuity of what the Feddies and Zeeks did after the war, and what level of technology the Zeon had for their psycommu research (the Psycho Zaku). When the Zeong (the omnidirectional mobile suit Char used at A Baoa Qu) was the first and only newtype/psycommu machine the Zeon had built. Both Kycilia and Degwin said Gihren didn't believe in the potential of newtypes, so he never allocated serious resources to building weapons around them.

Is Reconguista even worth watching? I direct people to Turn A and Gundam X, over Victory
and Reconguista.

Double Zeta I do tell people to give at least one watch through. It's a 46 iode detour from more interesting thngs in the UC, but the Earth Arc (African Zeon, Blue Team, Leina's Blood, Dublin Colony Drop) are all fantastic and what the show should've been like from the start.

The biggest problem with The Origin is that the was the anime unfolds, it assumes the viewer has already watched MSG.

When I watched the first 4 movies from The Origin I wasn't familiar with MSG but I found the OVA immensely entertaining.
It inspired me to watch the movies (those for MSG and Zeta) and I am planning to watch the series too. Also I watched CCA, ZZ, Victory and G no Reconguista.
Got those references but in reverse - its was fun too.

Both Kycilia and Degwin said Gihren didn't believe in the potential of newtypes, so he never allocated serious resources to building weapons around them.

But this is a different thing, a predecessor to the psycommu. It uses crude direct links to the nerves, no need for newtype pilot with psychic powers.
The researchers were underfunded and despaired.
Looks unofficial and semi legal to me - no deep connections with Gihren's policy.

Is Reconguista even worth watching?

I kind of like it (pretty pictures and animations). Dropped Turn A and Gundam X.
Yes, Victory is horrible but at least is in the same universe and Reconguista shows what happened after UC if someone is curious about that.
OK Turn A is theoretically set before Reconguista but there are no links between them like between Victory and Reconguista.

Having come from Unicorn, I can't say I'm a fan of the cgi. That alongside all the slapstick humour threw me off; it didn't feel like a typical Gundam movie.

Looking forward to the time skip, did not expect this to be how Char's life began.

Much of the backstory for The Origin comes from the author. He used notes and outlines from MSG, that were ambiguous and decided to fill in the blanks with his own creation. Hence the overabundance of Char wank. With the Origin, the line between genuine story telling and high priced fanfiction, begins to blur. Just compare and contrast these two scenes.

Kycilia and Char in the Origin (2015)

Kycilia and Char in MSG (1979)

As you watch the Origin, you learn the Zabi's had it out for Char/Casval since Zeon Deikun's death. In MSG, Kycilia (2nd only to Gihren) reveals she knew Char was Casval all along and didn't care. He worked under her and she put energy and resources towards his Newtype potential.

Genuine story telling or High priced fanfiction? You decide.

I watched episode 1/6 edited for the TV broadcast and it might be different from that you watched on the Net. Instead of having no battle scene at the beginning, it had a cool opening (song).

I was a bit disappointed in how little Zeon Deikun actually figured here. I would have really liked an extra 15 minutes or so to get a better feel for the man and his politics. Considering how important his legacy is, I don't think it would have been too much to squeeze in here

This is not my first contact with Gundam series, I have seen both IBO S1 and S2, and a bit of Turn a Gundam, yet I m really surprised.
It is starting extremely well, I don't want to make many assumptions yet since we are only on the beginning but only praise here.

Seems like Sunrise treated its all-time famous with some extra care on these OVAs, cant wait to see the next ones, will take it easy and see here and there though, don't want to binge-watch this, would be a waste.

If you liked the CG here, you will also enjoy it on stuff like Yamato 2199 for sure.

Pretty decent so far. I think there was a lot more comedy and facial expression than in other gundam titles. Also just like before the fanservice was needless.

Wow, that.........was amazing
i really dd not expect the story to start from there, a lot of my questions where really answered here.

i already liked Ramba Ral And Hamon but after this i just really loved them. ( really love Hamon's character design)

Guess now i can really understand Char's motivation. this episode has a nice atmosphere that really absorbs u into the world and covers on a lot of themes. i guess Char will be the main focus

I must say the ending scene accompanied with the ed song was just really nice.

well i guess this will be interesting.............

Did anyone find it stupid that they were able to take Casval and Artesia out of the tower in the Guntank but not their mother ? I know she was supposed to be guarded very strictly, but the children were LITERALLY with her and Hamon didn't face much difficulty in getting them out of there. So she obviously could've done that for their mother too. Good 1st ep, but this particular part I felt was very stupid.

It's been a while since I last watched a Gundam anime, but this looks pretty good. For the record, I've seen:

- Mobile Suit Gundam
- Zeta
- ZZ
- Char's Counterattack
- War in The Pocket
- Stardust Memory

This appears to be an appropriate "next entry" for me in the Gundam franchise. I can't wait to see the next episode.

Had high expectations from this despite it beeing from the UC line which so far has been mainly garbage. While it had a strong start, comedy ruins it overall and the animation while not bad is not exactly gundam quality.

Its the anime equivalent of theatrical overacting.
