THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Hmm, this was actually interesting. Animation is decent while it got off to an explosive start. There are some silly moments like this one:

However, the way it established the setting, themes, and war atmosphere alongside is storytelling was interesting. Action remains good as well as it covers Char's arc. The first episode is slightly over an hour later with the accompanying ED song; one that I thought was pleasant btw.

the first 5 minutes has some great CGI battle scenes, looking forward to the next episode

still the main problem i have with gundam shows is that its suppose to be on a high tech society but we still see old lifestyle and living conditions, heck they do not even have internet and laser guns

Awhh man. No dub. Guess I'll be waiting, but the parts I did watch sub were really good. CGI battles were great as always.

I'm using by limited bandwidth on Gundam 00 instead of this.

Somebody tell me I made the right decision.

Well, there was really no way that this was going to be bad, but I'm not sure it was as impressive as Unicorn. A lot of the characters were just total spazzes, and the CGI was quite jarring at times. There was very little action, and the entire episode just served to set up the next episode. The Guntank scene was quite awesome though. Soundtrack was impeccable.

Overall, it was very good. I can't help but feel slightly disappointed, but that is years and years of anticipation more than anything.

8-9/10 so far.

Excellent first episode. We got to see characters we haven't seen in ages, and every single one of them were used in the plot effectively. I was definitely invested.

So it's quite a straight adaptation of the manga. That's a shame, because I think there was a lot of room for an anime to build on, but obviously the time constraints has put a damper on that.

I feel that there was a real lack of holding any tension in the story here. Now sure, a lot of these characters have pre-determined futures - and that takes away some mystery - moreso if one's read the manga. On the other-hand, I feel that the way the anime has carried itself really takes away a lot of dramatic tension and suspense.

For example, we have the motorcade and Sasbro's assassination. While it works well enough in a manga to have these events finished in the course of a few pages - in an animated work the rush of events really starts to hurt. Then there are the somewhat mood-damaging moments like Sayla's comedic outburst at the sight of her dead father - an understandable scene, but the everything about the way it was portrayed just came off as cartoonish and unrefined.

The soundtrack, uninspiring, also indicates some questionable creative decisions. When Dozle goes to confront the Feddie security forces about to fire on the runaway Guntank, we're suddenly in a comedic
track. It's completely jarring to have this when we're supposedly in the middle of a rather serious chase. Of course, the details of these events weren't 100% 'serious' to begin with, but these parts in the portrayal all add up to completely take away any dramatic urgency to the story, and it really hurts the anime.

I hate to say it, but it seems that this might be a case of an author being too close to his own work - the manga had its sub-par moments, shining greatest when Yasuhiko gives the original story a workover, but with this episode, it feels as if we have a very confused work.

The political and background overhang is compromised by the slapstick and comedic handling. The strange timing and pacing of action events takes away from the sense of danger, and so we're left with a very awkward episode.

I'd go into complaints about the uninspiring acting and MS action a la IGLOO, but I think I've nitpicked enough. Hopefully, the more personal material of the following episodes will let the staff get a proper handle on things.

On the upside, the character animation was of an especially high quality, even if it was rather unsubtle in its style. The backgrounds were also handled pretty well, but it would be nice if the CG could be blended in better.
Overall, a very dull adaptation. The source material itself had its strengths and weaknesses, and it feels to me as if the team wasn't able to capitalise on the strengths of Yas's original story content.

This was phenomenal. I feel like it's on par with Gundam Unicorn, with it's classic art style (although slightly modernized), and crisp CG mechs. I always thought that the original Gundam needed a remake, and now my prayers have been heard. I only hope that they're going to be doing all of Gundam instead of just the prequel, mainly because I want to see the Bright Slap is all it's glory once again.

The only thing I thought could have been done a bit better would be to add a good insert song during the tank fight scene when Casval took the controls and fired the first shot.

As for the story itself....my god, was Roselucia Deikun always this ugly? Why would Zeon Zum Deikun stay legally married to this wrinkly old bagpipe?

This is freaking good. As good as Unicorn.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

I've never seen the Original UC Gundam series so I have no idea what to expect. However I kept on hearing about this Char person and after watching this I get why he is so popular

It's late and I'm too tired to get into full detail but I liked this A LOT

Char = Japanese Darth Vader

Not only the best villain but also the best character in the entire Gundam universe.

Victory is definitely worth watching. It's depressing as fuck though and pretty grimdark, like Eva tier depressing. It's unique in that there really isn't any other Gundam that can be easily compared to it. If you can stand old animation (or if you are a fan of it like myself), then there really isn't any excuse not to watch it.

Reconguista is in the same universe but wayyyyyyyyy in the future.

Is it preferable to watch the original series before this? I suppose it's not mandatory but if I enjoy this more watching the original first I'll do that, cause I had it in mind anyway. Thanks!

This is going to take 2 years to complete, and this is only one arc of the novel. Just watch the original if you want to because waiting for the OVA will take ages.

It's hard to say.

The original and the Origin are quite different shows, so liking one might not guarantee liking the other. Seeing the original first would definitely give you an added familiarity with almost all the cast - and it would definitely make certain backward nods a lot more meaningful at first sight. It also feels as if there isn't being a major effort to make the Origin anime accessible to newcomers - so some level of familiarty with the setting and major players would certainly not go amiss, and would probably be a benefit.

Overall, seeing Mobile Suit Gundam first would probably have its benefits, and you wouldn't have to wait for the next few episodes either. Watching MSG would obviously 'spoil' certain events of The Origin, of course.

I get what you're saying, I think having some background and knowing the setting is vital in these Gundam series to get a better understanding and enjoyment out of them. And the spoilers thing, well...I don't mind about that, it's only natural hahaha! Thank you very much!

This is the beginning of the Universal Century (the main Gundam timeline), so yes, you can. In fact, this would be the best place to start if it was finished.

This was ungodly boring. Huge fans of UC might love it though, for the sole reason that it is UC. Unicorn is also UC, but much more entertaining.

As expected it was very cool. Little action, but weirdly, I love it when there isn't a lot of mecha action in mecha anime. Not sure what I think about the comedic moments and exaggerated rage emotions of some characters, but it certainly was amazing. Wish the soundtrack was more powerful to enhance some of the emotional scenes.

Arghh, now the wait for second OVA begins.

Yep. Let it be known that Gundam was the last one to convert to the dark side. An era has ended.

Not a bad adaptation at all. I'm not sure that including the Battle of Loum at the start was strictly necassary, epsecially since we're likely to get a much more detailed showing in episode 4 that'll give us the full strategy of the battle, but no doubt Bandai wanted it to help promote the HG Char Zaku II Origin version (as if a Char suit needs help with sales).

My big problem with it is the humor and exagerated reactions, they've taken what Yoshikazu drew in the manga and then hamfistedly ramped them up. It was unnecassary and detracted from the tension of the moments they were shoe horned into. It also felt a little rushed in the early scenes, but as the BD will be 10 minutes longer that may solve that problem.

A good start and it's only going to get better since the Deikun death and escape from Munzo was the weakest part of the prequal arc.

Other than that a really good start and it's funny how young Char is voiced by Luffy and old Char by Shanks, just saiyan.

More like Shanks is voiced by Char, since you know, Gundam is older, but it depends on who was the character that made you remember Shuuichi. His voice is so relaxing.

Though I was more suprised by Banagher being voiced by Meruem.

I really enjoyed it, my only problem was that some scenes should have had a serious tone throughout them rather than inserting bits of comedy.

Really nice :D Artesia (Loli Sayla) is so kawaii <3<3 Her faces are adorable to look at :3

Casval has the same VA as Luffy :O Never imagined Shota Char to have that voice lol XD I feel bad for him a little though, his mom technically never even talked to him even once on screen? He's a tough kid though, owning those mechs like that XD

Hamon is friggin BA! Dat kick in the nuts and elbow to the face XD And voiced by SawaMiyuki <3

Ral was really fun to see XD Lol'd at the part where he was stopping the traffic with a "flat" tire XD

The last scene was beautiful looking at outer space, The Earth and the moon ^^

The actress to play Casaval, Tanaka Mayumi, also the voice of Krillin and Luffy does a great job of capturing Ikeda Shuuichi's peformance and putting it into a child. I am sure Ikeda Shuuichi must have coached her really hard in playing the character. Han Megumi, the daughter of Han Keiko, most famous as Lalah in the original Gundam series as well as Luna and Queen Beryl in the original Sailor Moon series plays the young Sayla/Artesia. I think it is good they selected her for reasons in relation to the legacy and to the characters. Ginga Banjou still plays Giren and still has the character. Unfortunately, Koyama Mami is not back as Kycila and Gouri Daisuke is not back as Dozle and their new seiyuus didn't feel right to me. But I can understand with Gouri Daisuke since he passed away. Hirose Masashi isn't playing Ranba Ral (ok, so the character is 11 years younger and looks it), but he did play the "character" in Gundam Builders and I felt it was weird they didn't even cast him as his father and Nakatani Yumi is not back as Hamon. I am a purest when it comes to seiyuus even in the original Japanese. I understand if the original seiyuu has passed or retired, but it doesn't feel right to me personally that Ranba Ral, Kycilia, and Hamon were re-cast.

I am sure I may open up to them in time like i did with Sailor Moon Crystal, but that was more forgivable since it was a remake to be faithful to the manga and the manga had a much different tone than the 1990s anime.

Char is not Char without Ikeda Shuuichi as Amuro can't be Amuro without Furuya Tooru.

I haven't read the manga in awhile, but I don't feel comfortable with the comedy aspects with Dozle's injuries. It just feels out of place considering the situation. But Yoshikazu, the director did the manga and was part of the original anime so I am sure he got Tomino's approval on certain things regardless. But with the first half of Double Zeta, Tomino was forced to make it comedic since he got complaints from viewers, sunrise and his own family that Zeta was too dark durings its broadcast.

2 years is the best case scenario. Episode 2 is going to be Fall 2015, so hopefully episode 3 is this time next year, and episode 4 will be Fall 2016. Of course, Unicorn was initially on this same schedule then went to a 1 episode per year schedule..

And this is just gonna be volumes V-VII of the manga. Who knows how long it would take to get a full adaptation.

Some interesting information there, I didn't know about Han and Keiko Megumi's roles, makes me wonder if Han will be voicing Lalah when she turns up in ep 3/4. Hirose Masashi wasn;t available to voice Ral this time round, he fell ill late last year and Build Fighters Try had to replace him for the VA after 3 episodes, it was a bit jarring that but what cna you do. I think the voice actor would've need to be changed though, the way Ral was originally drawn made him look like he was in his 50's instead of the 35 he actually was, and he would be in his 20's here but is also much taller and less stocky, I don't think Masashi's voice would have fit this time. Same goes with Kycilia's VA, she's been drawn as a much more muscular woman this time around and the new VA fits that perfectly.

Han Keiko did voice Lalah in Unicorn so she should voice her again. I guess I may warm up to Kycila's new seiyuu but Koyama Mami is such an iconic seiyuu. But Ginga Banjo is always going to be Giren. I hope Mori Katsuji later comes back as Garma. That mother fucker is considered the Casey Kasem of Japan.

And then it's off to wait for the next one .___.

Great shit so far, Loum looked awesome, really hope we get a full adaption eventually so we can see Solomon and A Boa Qu in the same style.
The only weird thing I noticed was the almost comedic music when Dozle is talking to the feddie troops during the guntank chase.

I guess next episode will cover their time on earth and up to Casval becomes Char and joins the Zeon defense force. Won't be much mecha pewpew for a while at least.

This'll be covering volumes 5,6 and 7 of the manga and seems to be a pretty faithful adaptation. Episode1 shows only the first half of Vol 5.

They are taking it rather slow pace-wise too, which makes me feel like a full Origin adaptation won't ever happen. Hope I'm wrong.

loved it. now lets just hope its not 6 months + for the next ep.

also loved it when little Char said he'd grow up and make them all bow down to him.

I need to binge watch UC lol

My hype is over 9000 atm xD

Please tell me that's not true TwT

2 years is the best case scenario. Episode 2 is going to be Fall 2015, so hopefully episode 3 is this time next year, and episode 4 will be Fall 2016. Of course, Unicorn was initially on this same schedule then went to a 1 episode per year schedule..

And this is just gonna be volumes V-VII of the manga. Who knows how long it would take to get a full adaptation.
I'd be lying if I said that this didn't make me cry :(

Anyone knows why Kycilia is fully grown in here? I mean, she was 24 in 0079. This is set in 0068. She's supposed to be 13 in this setting...

I suppose it'd make sense if Yasuhiko bumped up her age to let him start on the Zabi feuding early. That, or he didn't check up on the official info - it could be an undertandable mistake given how aged she comes across in MSG.

Lol she did look around 40 in the original.

First one is a poor reason to twist pre-established canon though. I hope it wasn't on purpose because that's just bad writing. =/

I hope you don't expect Origin to follow the original. There's a ton of shit that was changed.

Ah, if that's the case then I probably shouldn't.

I'm still weirded out by Kycilia's nude scene though...

The giant block nipple was pretty weird. I don't know why the closeup was censored though, these are OVAs, plus they already showed them just moments before.

But seriously wtf
