RIP Attack on Titan

It probably won't get a full adaptation. I'm sure the production committee is probably really disappointed. Even Kabaneri sold more discs than Attack on Titan Season 2!

Pretty sad :(

DVD: 19,454
Total: 56,793

Shingeki no Kyojin S2 Vol. 1

Hopefully we get Euphonium season 3. AoT is surprisingly low. Good thing they already announce season 3.

Ouch, Attack on Titan sales really took a nose dive. Kind of expected, but at least season 3 was already announced.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

This is why you should never wait too long to make a sequel for a popular series.

No, the climate of the industry changed. The decline of disc sales is the decline of physical media and the rise of streaming. You are comparing 4 years ago to now, things change. Since Oricon doesnt track digital sales or streaming at the moment it obv looks like a flop.

Here is proof with citation that even something like Durarara made a profit and look at the sales.

Durarara!! 18,311
Durarara!! x2 Ketsu 2,717
Durarara!! x2 Shou 4,603
Durarara!! x2 Ten 2,451

They waited because they can. These ppl know what they are doing and arent blindly looking at numbers like most ppl in this forum.

That's nice to hear. Are the international rights include Crunchy Roll,Funimation and streaming in China?

Not really. SnK is suffering the same fate of Kizumonogatari. They waited too long and the hype started to fade away. I don't even know why you're linking that stuff about Durarara by the way. I never said anything about SnK not making profit.

So you didn't read anything. Disc sales mean nothing = who cares if it declined over the years.

Why are you looking at data that is 1. incomplete 2. irrelevant in this era. Kizu, Aot, or w/e doesn't need to sell on some old school metric to make a profit/be successful. In fact, if it makes more now then before you should throw disc sales out the window entirely. W/e fate it suffered isn't a bad thing because you don't have holistic data. And you said "This is why you should never wait too long to make a sequel to a popular series" well this obv implies that you think disc sales are somehow important to them.

What you see as a bad thing for disc sales they see as a good thing because they are successful on other platforms.

"Disc sales do matter, they matter a lot - but it's only ~5% of total anime revenue. Very few anime can succeed with just one good rev source"

Again, I understand you are looking at the numbers just as numbers and yes it declined, but it means absolutely nothing it is like pointing out something that doesn't represent anything. If Aot sold the same amount of discs as first season and just happened to stop selling merch or become popular internationally that 5% revenue would mean nothing and then they would rethink starting production so late.

This is business and people are making money off these popular series. Which is why they will continue to make sequels for hits despite low disc sales. That being said, I cant wait for Soma season 3 which season 1 and 2 had shit sales for.

It means a lot to Pony Canyon who are at the top of the committee. I'm sure they're not ecstatic to find out the series has heavily declined in BD/DVD sales in Japan. Sure they'll have success overseas but that's not the the thread for it.

Why are you looking at data that is 1. incomplete 2. irrelevant in this era. Kizu, Aot, or w/e doesn't need to sell on some old school metric to make a profit/be successful. And you said "This is why you should never wait too long to make a sequel to a popular series" well this obv implies that you think disc sales are somehow important to them.

1. The data for Kizumonogatari isn't complete. We have seen the box office sales for all the three movies which were unimpressive and were easily surpassed by SAO and the Madoka movies. 2. This is a thread for Blu-ray and DVD sales so yes it's relevant. If you have any data for the streaming sales then by all means go ahead and make a different thread for it to discuss it. And yes the disc sales matter to the video publishers investing in the series. Do you actually believe they'll be happy to hear that the sales have dropped from 50k to 6k?
What you see as a bad thing for disc sales they see as a good thing because they are successful on other platforms.

That makes no sense at all. You can be successful in both disc sales and other platforms.

Again, I understand you are looking at the numbers just as numbers and yes it declined, but it means absolutely nothing it is like pointing out something that doesn't represent anything. You're wasting your time arguing about something I never even said anything about. I know SnK is a successful franchise that makes a lot of money thanks to the merchandise, video games, manga sales, streaming and overseas licensing.

The sales are low for snk s2, but keep in mind snk S1 Volume 1 had two episodes and cost about 6,300 yen while Snk s2 V1 had six episodes and and has a price tag of 20,000 yen

So in terms of profit it didn't do bad at all, but in terms of numbers, it sold poorly. imo it wasn't a good idea to make s2 bd volume be that expensive, should have stick to the 2 episodes a volume price tag, it probably would have sold in the teens.

I'm not saying that it sold wonderfully well, but it really is not that bad as how people are making it out to be profit wise.

snk season 2 volume 1 price is literally 3 times more expensive than season 1 vol 1 price. That is all I was saying, just pointing it out since a lot of persons are not aware of it.

Its still the same. 3 times more expensive because 3 times more content. 1 big volume of season 2 may have triple profit, but the number of volume is one third the normal. There's literally no different in outcome

So if that 20k yen is true then that means they made 109 million yen ($980,000) by selling 6 episodes. They actually made a profit on this one since each episode cost them an average of $100k -$150k per episode (Average since I have no idea what their actual budget is for this show).

I mean....SnK is still pretty popular manga-wise and anime-wise so it's most likely getting a full adaptation eventually anyway. Or at least most of it will probably be adapted. If this were any other series I'd be more worried. lol it's not like WIT's producing anything else that can be considered a cash cow right now anyway.

I only started following these lists in the past six months and it looks really different when the highest sales number is only < 6000. Hibike has been pretty consistent though, nice.

I think KyotoAnimation will stick with movie sequels as they have shown with Free! and Chuunibyou. For now I am so glad that Hibike! Euphonium is getting two new movies. With Takeda-sensei confirming that she will write about Kumiko's experience as a second and third year student, I really hope more Hibike! comes our way. I am also glad that Hibike! Euphonium didn't suffer from second-season-sales-syndrome which has been a trend in recent years.

1) SnK S2 VOL 1 price tag like you all say is really 20,000 but no one really buy it at this price, on amazon japan you can get it for 15,903 thanks to pre-order discount and as you know most of all the sales come from amazon japan.
check this link:https://www.amazon.co.jp/TV%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1-%E9%80%B2%E6%92%83%E3%81%AE%E5%B7%A8%E4%BA%BA-Season-2-Vol-1-Blu-ray-%E6%A2%B6%E8%A3%95%E8%B2%B4/dp/B06XT226DZ/ref=zg_bs_2147354051_30?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5J4AKZ7S8ZRZ487ZJS39

2)Quote from a anime news website: "Netlab also asked the production company staff member whether ratings determine if an anime is a hit. The staff member said, "No, a hit is currently what sells DVDs and Blu-rays." Ratings do not influence profit because production committees purchase time slots beforehand"

A answer from someone who work within the industry.

Link for the article:http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2017-06-19/anime-industry-member-discusses-production-committee-system/.117694 I recommend you to read it it's pretty interesting and insightful.
3) Yes they are give a green lit to season 3 but with this huge drop and inconsistent sales how do you think this affect season 3? I think we can expect quality drop for sure.

Judging by the buying habits in Japan we can expect vol 2 to sell less and season 3 even lesser.

In season 3, there is a lot of fujoshi appeal and if you know fujoshi they are the main audience that spend the most money, Levi will also get plenty of screen time in s3 as well so that is also an appeal to fujoshi, so it will be interesting to see if season 3 BD sales will be any better than two.

By today's standards the sales for SnK S2 is quite fine if you ask me, but overall compared to the past as far as I'm concerned then yeah that's a bit of a problem. However because of this its not really doing itself terrible... it's just not doing itself well either, its FAR from a flop if you ask me (lets take the quality of the shows aside for a moment, if that's fine).

I think I'm more salty by the fact that Re:Creators sold rather... average or something. 2k sales isn't bad of a number, its just not doing as good as the others. Well, I think it's better than 1k sales at least.

As for Clockwork Planet's sales I think considering the show itself is pretty mediocre, the sales are... well, rather bad. I think I have no issues with this one but then again it still kinda pains me, despite all of that.

@Symphyon

That is, its sales can still be estimated as average? It surprises me that it sells even worse than comedies like Gabriel DropOut from last season.

I'm confused, sorry if I may ask but I assume you mean Re:Creators?

Eh I think the average would be around 5k sales? I don't really remember well but anything below it would be struggling but all depends how much its getting, where as 1k or below financially is considered a flop (as far as I'm concerned, hence for example I pointed out Clockwork where even financially its not doing well).
