After using scripts stolen from Central Anime. BTW, we (Central Anime) are remastering them ourselves at the moment.

Good first episode, a set up for an epic story. I can see some resemblances with Macross here, it's no surprise though, this anime was an inspiration for a lot of future works.

Oldest anime Im watching after Lupin III, very interisting concept so far (no original by todays standards, but looking back 30 yars ago, it was something new).

Oh god. I decided to watch this on SyFy. The dub is horrendous! The animation, dreadful. Did he actually walk right through that door? The story so far might end up being the only strong point. Off to episode 2.

Welcome to 70's animation! This is actually better than a lot of stuff I've seen. You've gotta keep in mind that during this era anime was seen as kiddy stuff and nothing was given very much money. From my experience, you don't start seeing great animation until the 80's.

Anyways, I thought some of the animation was interesting, and there's obviously some creative minds working on this. I like the story a lot so far, though I admit that it's just getting started. I've got high hopes based off this first episode.

The first episode was interesting enough, I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes. There was too much military action for my taste, don't care for that stuff. The robot was funny and we got some funky background music rarely heard in anime. Must have been awesome to be a kid watching this in the 70s.

So we meet again, Central Anime? Thank you for your great work (especially on the entirety of LOGH).

Anyway, Started watching this whole "Uchuu" franchise and nice 1st episode. And the animation isn't that bad for it's time, I think it's probably better than Cutey Honey for example..

I just found some channel on my Roku I'd never heard of before, called Manga, run by Starz. They have maybe two-dozen "classic" anime titles, and this is one of them. It's the same dub that I remember seeing every day after school in the early 1980s. I'm not anti-dub, but I admit this is driving me crazy, if for no other reason than I can tell that "Captain Avatar" is voiced by Casey Kasem, trying to sound gruff. I also remember reading a while ago that this version got the usual bowdlerization to make it suitable for US daytime programming.

I'm having fun with the nostalgia but the grown-up me wants to see it as it was originally, so I'm going to go have to find the originals subbed.

Edit:
Turns out the English dub of Captain Avatar is done by someone named Gordon Ramsey (not the famous chef). Well who knew. He really does sound like Casey Kasem after smoking three packs of cigarettes.

Damn this was impressive! This is what I really call anime, just so intense! The OP alone already gives me shivers! I'm certain that I'm going to love this anime!

Nice...

The true is that I cannot fully enjoy old anime.

Let's see how it goes.

Having watched the remake first, it certainly is a dramatic comparison. Yuki is rather ugly, Captain Okita's voice is much more plain and younger-sounding, and the opening song's vocals were atrocious (although this is at least in part a problem with audio quality). None-the-less, while it lacks in visuals and audio, it may trump in areas in which the remake was lacking.

I watched the original a year ago and absolutely loved it, haven't seen 2199 yet, except for a few bits, which got me mad hype. You're in a bad situation watching the original after 2199 :)

But really, I'm shocked that you dislike the OP's vocals. I actually cried the first time I watched the OP, it evokes primal, visceral emotions in a way not much else I've seen does. The opening of Star Trek (2009) was a similar experience, in terms of having great effect with very little buildup.

I love the look of Leiji's women (or woman), too. I like the way it was adapted for 2199, but maybe a bit of the charm was lost.

The Imperial Japanese element is not really mentioned in this thread, but it's often brought up elsewhere. Being Filipino-Chinese American, I was initially skeptical, but now I love the Space Battleship Yamato as a symbol of the hope of redemption. I have a model of it on my desk.

"Cosmo Cleaner-D", it sounds like one of those teleshopping scams.

I must say that this starting point was incredibly hooking, despite all the typical 70s elements (ex: radiation is dangerous but not too much) and the ugly spaceships designs (Matsumoto designed so much better things). Of course, the movements are sometimes bad and the drawings often simplistic, but the main characters designs are still good enough (now, I know the "grandfather" of the Exelion commandant in Gunbuster).

5/5 Why would this alien queen be willing to save the Earth? How did she learn about them? And... why are those invaders so bent on destroying humans?

@nDroae The 201x remake kept a touch of Matsumoto's style? Since this version was made under the son of the old producer (the man who came up with the rough basis that Matsumoto transformed into a winning series), I thought that they would have tried to "purge" Leiji Matsumoto's traces.

It may be only my perception, but when I look at 2199's Yuki and Starsha, I feel like a touch of it is there. They look like the same characters adapted into a modern anime style, and I still feel a sense of regal magical romance about them that I don't get from other modern anime women. Again, maybe it's just my attachment to the characters. But the eyes especially feel so right.

On the other hand if any old fans think I'm crazy, I wouldn't object. I just got into this a year ago and I'm glad I can enjoy all its forms. (Even the live action movie, ha!)

@nDroae I see what you mean art-wise. I recognize "the character" I just saw today in Yamato. Though they certainly brushed a good portion of the original style away because I don't recognize "Leiji Matsumoto's trademark woman" except in the hairs. length.
Too bad considering Zero or Gun Frontier proved that it could still look good in 2000s digital drawings with only a bit of softening.

@Rei366 True, those retain the original style far more.

Maybe part of me likes the novelty in 2199's blend of old and new :)

In the 2199 episode 1 thread I find this:

Trequartista said:
A nice start.
And the female characters seem to have the exact face -_-

Roloko said:
Leiji Matsumoto's females all have same face syndrome. xD

So at least that carried over :D

I'm moving this conversation about 2199 to the 2199 episode 1 thread:

I really liked this first episode. It looked similar to Gunbuster but since it was made first it was Gunbster that took some inspiration from it.

My only complain is the animation but if the story turns out to be good (and it seems it will) I won't complain about it too much :-P

Thanks @RafaelDeJongh for recommendation :-)

Figured I should finally watch this since it inspired a lot of Gundam 79, my favourite anime.

Very good start, love the premise, very desperate stakes for our heroes. A dry destroyed earth is a crazy and sad state to see.

Wonder how the Yamato turns from that ancient rusted out wreck into what we see in the op though? is the space battleship just based on it?
