Do you accept them?

If facebook has taught me anything, it's that having hundreds of people you don't actually care about on your friends list is really inconvenient. So no, I'm not big on random friend requests.

If someone wants to be a friend with me they should give me at least few reasons (in a message) why should we be friends which wouldn't make it so random. Same goes for facebook, it's just weird why would I be friends with someone I've never seen and I don't know anything about. I think it's just awkward. And it's your friend request, not mine, therefore it's your duty to try to message me, not mine. If you thought I would actually oeverwhelm you with questions who you are etc. Wrong. If you're only going to add me to increase your friends number (which seems pretty popular on facebook *facepalm*) and show everyone "look I've got alot of friends". No thank you.

I'd accept any if I got any. Sometimes someone wants to make a friend or something, I'm not gonna stare down possibility. Too many times have I myself wanted to be friends with someone yet cowered at fear of being rejected.

The only time I have rejected a friend request was in the form of a rather suspectful, void list user. Spambot probably.

In the other cases I can accept people being more selective, but as for me? I don't have any reason to refuse a friendship request from whoever wants. My list and comments are public, so are my preferences and opinions. The big deal is that I'll have more names in a list. Okay.

Never really gotten one (in here), but why not?
But I still remove "useless" friends at random times as I do in other sites...

No, I ignore all my friendrequests until they post some comment on my profile. You people better do too, or you wont hear anything from me. Honestly, how hard can it be? I don't bite.....or do I? >:3

I got some random friend request from this site and facebook. Even though I do accept them here, it's sad that I don't chat with them. However, in facebook, I would not accept any friend request.

I don't deserve any friends since I barely talk to anyone. I have one friend though here who I have on facebook. He's the only one I ever talk to about anime and other things.

If I don't recognize the user I probably won't accept it, unless they send a message explaining why they're sending it to me.

Like Ntad said, it's just common courtesy.

I'd prefer a message of some sort before I add anyone. I have irl friends on my MAL and it keeps things neater if I don't have to search through a bunch of people I've never spoken to in order to find their accounts.

Yep this, most requests I've gotten are through other friends on this site so I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. If we aren't going to chat, what's the point?

This is true. IF there was a 'feed' or something else that can be annoyingly filled up by nonsense. There is nothing like that here so how could they be "inconvenient"?

I get quite a few and they are usually from people who I welcome in the Intro thread. I say about 10% of them message me first but whatever. If they don't want to message first maybe I will send something out first.

People are shy I guess.

what the hell are the "benefits" of being a "friend" on MAL anyway?

oops, that sounded dirty

you know what i mean - does it change access to your information or something? sorry i'm so dumb about this. I don't explore much, i just show up to talk anime (and other crap in general discussion lol)

i am proud to announce i "made friends" today (responded to rquests from like forever ago) if you were funny, or i "know" you, u made the cut!

gosh i feel so less lonely now LOL. i'd like to thank the academy...

@Dainty

Perhaps not to your info, but there is a 'friends only' option for your comments and blog. I would consider that a benefit if you have pictures up or private links you would only want certain people seeing.

They would be inconvenient because I like to go to people's profiles from my friends list, to see what they're up to. If I don't particularly care what someone is up to, then they're just making the process more difficult.

Which isn't to say that I hate everyone who isn't on my friends list, of course, haha. The people on my list are just more or less my "favourites."

Makes sense. I can dig it.

For me I'll go thru my friends list after awhile and remove people who haven't logged in since they joined and stuff like that.

So I see people who put in their profile: "I refuse random friend requests".

Got me wondering why? What's the big deal? Is there something they can see/access differently if they are in your friends list? Is there a friend limit?

What's your take?

I accept them and I try talking to them. I like meeting new people. I don't really like having 'friends' I never even said "Hi". I also send friend request but only if we have a lot of stuff in common or we have talked before.
There's no such thing as a painless lesson.
They just don't exist. Sacrifices are necessary.
You can't gain anything without losing something first.
Although if you can endure that pain and walk away from it,
you'll find that you now have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle.

If I don't know a person who's just added me I tend to leave a comment on their profile asking them who they are and why they are adding me. If they don't reply or give some bull response then I deny.

Like it's one thing when a randomer adds you but also leaves a message on their profile (or in the request) saying why they are adding you and starting up a conversation, but when it's just some random invite, the person hasn't left you a message of anything... why should I accept that?

A small conversation first would be nice, lol. I probably wouldn't, it seems pointless to randomly add someone then most likely never speak to them.

Whenever I get a random friend request, I look at the dude's profile and see what they rated Elfen Lied and base it off that.

Though accepting them usually isn't a good thing, I have like 10+ people on my friends list who I just have never talked too.
