So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Major observations this week:

- SymphogearG v1 sales is now above Brother Conflict v1

- Free v1 and v2 both rank in the BD and the DVD chart ! And this is not even the full weekly chart.

- A LOT of IdolM@ster albums in the chart
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

interesting that the 2nd season almost tripled the sales of season 1, usually sequels tend to sell less

Yes!! Rock on Symphogear! Should chart again next week I hope to break through 13K. With good bonus OST CDs and later OVA episodes I hope it can maintain that as well, though this one did come with an event ticket so I suppose v2 could drop.

What a dead week, i cant' even remember when i saw 300- threshold for DVD.
Sadly but seems SnK DVD for v1 and v2 finished charting. BD should hang for a while though I think.
Next week (strictly speaking tomorrow) v4 is out, it should boost sales for v1-v3.
And OST for SnK also fell out, it was so close to reach 60K while charting :(

Other than this strong v2 sales for Free! thanks to event tickets and Love Live! v7 still selling really well.

Log Horizon's OP song is selling THAT well? Well, gimme a second to listen to the full song... yeah, okay. Not bad, not bad... mhm, I can see why it would be addicting. Not exactly my type of genre, but still cool.

Anyway, any chance of you posting another sales prediction post, sym, or is it still too early to tell anything new? Oh, and thanks for posting the sales.

I would wait at least until every series has aired the ep.3. In fact a lot of anime still do not have any prediction from Stalker even though they have been available for preorders for some time (but not long enough for Stalker to produce a prediction). And even if the Stalker estimate is available I would prefer to wait at least a week for the number to settle down, so you may need to wait until ep.4 is aired before seeing any prediction post from me.

There is also the problem of popular anime like Kill la Kill still not available for preorders, and any prediction post without it is going to be partial and not comprehensive, which would be a shame.

Your mistake was to assume that only girls watched/bought it, it has been admited and said on many japanese and even western forums that a large portion of the consumers are male and i would have never expected Free to reach those sales without the male audience, and how "good" it is depends on each individual.

Its actually pretty good and not just all fanservice for women it actually has a plot. I really do hope it will come back next Summer with these sales even if its just an OVA release. Easily the best anime of last season for me along with Watamote and Kami-Nai.

So pandering rubbish like Free is selling almost 20k while something legitimately great like Genshiken doesn't even reach a thousand. Alright. I think I'm done caring about the modern industry at this point.

Except that I can argue as much why Genshiken is also pandering and why Free is legitimately great. So the words you use are just personal preference disguised as some objective insights. I love both Free and Genshiken but I can see why one can be a lot popular than the other. Indulging in standard based entirely on your personal preference would just blind you to see what, how and why things really work in the industry. I guess at least you are right in saying that you should not care about the modern industry, because you do not seem to want to understand it anyway.

Just stop taking sales like they're any significant measure of quality, ambition or general superiority of an anime product like some people would want to have you believe (cough4channerscough) and acknowledge that it's like 90% predetermined by hitting the right demographics (in this case fujoshi), having an already popular source material (Free exploded on Tumblr when the original commercial aired), finding periods when there's limited competition (nothing else that aired during summer really took off or had much of a budget that I can recall) and hitting trends at the peak of their popularity (Shows aimed at Fujoshi have been shown to be quite lucrative for a few years now not just Free! as have things like Idols, Imoutos, Magical Girls and to a lesser extent Hero vs. Demon Lord of opposing genders stories) and you should be fine.

It's not the industry that's the problem, it's the people that put any significant stock in Blu-Ray sales as a measure of how good a show is or not.

I mostly didn't want it to sell well cause I didn't want to endure months of the Kyoani fanbase going around beaking off and chirping yet again and spreading their gospel of how it proves just how much better Kyoani is at making anime than anyone else like they always used to, but to my surprise they've been kind of tame about it this time around. Maybe I was wrong about how far that fanbase has come in terms of maturity in the last few years on MAL though and if that's the case I honestly don't care how well it does. No grief no problems really.

I'm quite surprised I thought it would do well. I'm guessing either the adaption wasn't as good as the original material or Watamote never really had that big of a fanbase to begin with.

I was expecting Gin no Saji or Uchouten Kazoku here.

If Ro-Kyu-Bu reaches 4k per volume that's enough for S3 right? Right?!

Lol WataMote did so badly. At least there is an OVA in the works.
I'm quite surprised I thought it would do well. I'm guessing either the adaption wasn't as good as the original material or Watamote never really had that big of a fanbase to begin with.
Well, if you look at the manga sales thread (also posted every week in MAL) you would see WataMote there when a new volume is out. And only a popular manga would make it to that weekly chart (because so many manga get published every week), so fanbase is not really the main issue.

From what I read in Japanese forums, the most common view is that the adaptation is good because it uses a lot of methods and approaches that are only available in anime and make the manga entertaining in the anime media. Most also agree that the anime has improved upon the character design so that characters look cute, even moe, in the anime and it also toned down the depressive or frustration tone from the manga. On the other hand, there are also a lot of comments that even so watching the painfully embarrassing behavior and encounters of the heroine week after week can still be a lulling or tiring experience. A lot of people think that watching this anime once is enough, even though they praise the effort and the result. Now how likely do you think these people will buy the anime BD/DVD, which is a lot more expensive than the manga?

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I can tell you it was a very depressing watch, and Tomoko's attitude was terrible making the experience much worse, maybe it was more painful since I've seen numerous anime with girls that were as much of an otaku, hikikomori, and socially awkward as her but they all tend to be vibrant, pretty or at least average looking, and overall had a decent personality.

The interesting thing is how the manga, which has a less cute looking Tomoko and even more depressing/embarrassing stories than the anime, was such a big seller. It just reminds me how different the media of manga and anime can be. We know manga has a much bigger range of art styles and story types than anime, and most of them would never adapt into good seller in anime. Perhaps WataMote is a marginal case of that -- still workable as an anime adaptation but not going to go far. In manga people can read it in a pace that does not place too much burden or overwhelms the reader, but in anime such thing is not so easy. The anime staff really got my utmost respect for giving it so much effort to adapt the manga into one 30-min episode after another without making it too depressive or repetitive or boring to watch. Honestly given the warm reception of the anime I even thought it just might sell more but I guess at the end the simple question "do I want to watch this all over again?" settled the matter for most people.

I can see a few people wanting to watch it over again but most people who enjoyed just wanted to see it once. I don't blame them either and there's still a few other methods besides the manga itself to support the series if they choose to do so.

I can understand Watamote's low sales. It's fun to watch but the anime handling of the cringey comedy is something I would like to not watch again.

I'm still fucking depressed that Uchouten Kazoku didn't make it pass the Manabi Line.

Wow @Symphogear. I hope it keeps selling well to increase the chances for a third season. Although many aspects of the story wrapped up pretty nicely.

For me it wasn't even a "it's depressing to watch" issue. I never felt depressed watching this show. It is more of a stagnate issue. Nothing ever happened, just Tomoko being weird week after week.

However, way to go Free! It was a good show despite all the criticism it received from certain demographics. Glad to see a KyoAni in a top spot.

Still don't get the Symphogear sales...

To be perfectly honest, the vast majority of people would very much rather watch a nice anime about swimming and bros with a decent story where they show their upperbodies for like 1-2 minutes in the whole 21 minute of an episode than having to deal with BL jokes in a show every 2 minutes, i can prefectly understand why Free would sell better than Genshiken, most people who read/watch Genshiken they do it for the humour (not all of it obviously) and the weird yet funny character (who'd get shat on by society if it were real life), wheres in free it's kind of a casual show with some interest from the female audience. in other words, Free doesn't have the mature content and black humour Genshiken has which makes it more accessible to wider audiences.

Everyone said it, the humiliation comedy that is Watamote was new and refreshing at first, but after realizing the MC was too stuck up to ever change, that just made the show far too predictable. Her only redeeming quality would be being able to change that absolutely putrid personality of hers, and without that, as well as having the appearance of what could be described as the opposite of female leads today, she became some sort of ultimate "anti-hook". So in a way, I think it can be said the anime version of Tomoko eventually earned the ire of the viewers by declaring she was popular when she was so clearly not.

First time I saw sales of Kitakubu and Stella, OUCH! To be honest Kiniro Mosaic wasn't much better, but they got the character designs right, which goes to show the most important thing about having anime about cute girls, is having girls that are ACTUALLY CUTE. Also I will admit to finishing Kiniro Mosaic, and not the others, based on the character design solely. Because if I didn't care about that, I'd probably actually care about Free.
