Good ep, even with Piccolo fighting at his full power it seems Goku is still a match for him.

I'm honestly not that impressed by this fight. Maybe the talk of full power brought back some bad memories.

Yeah, I'm with you, this fight seems pretty underwhelming thus far.

I agree with the complaints of this battle so far, I always found the start of this bout very one-sided, but as it goes it does became far more exciting.

So this is the first super invisible fight in DB, and maybe also the first power level dong swinging contest. I was wondering why Piccolo didn't use his true power well getting beaten up for 14 minutes, but at least they gave us a good explanation for it. Still, "You can't beat my TRUE power! Well, you can't beat my TRUE power! Well it's time to show my SUPER TRUE power!", etc.

And jesus, the Super Sacred Water is Yuyu Hakusho level asspull, it's so disgusting to lead up to the final fight(assuming that this is). Not only is it contrived as hell for Goku to luckily head to Karin so he can get told about a vase that leads him to a magic land we never heard of, to get a magic water that will make him stronger, but it's also the contrast of that with Ten, and what it actually does. It comes up out of nowhere, making Goku who was practically even with Ten probably 100x stronger than him, taking out Ten's opponent in one punch, and then bodying Piccolo's YOUTHFUL form when he couldn't touch his old form. All of this from a random power up. And the contrast of it to Ten, who worked his butt off in montages of him trying to learn the Mafuba, in which he finally masters it and risks his life using it to put Piccolo away. He then fails, almost dies, and get's saved from random baby kid Goku who got a 100x power up for no reason. What's the message? Try hard and fail so that some lucky toddler will save the day? Seriously, I don't care if this fight is cool, it's lost nearly all value because of that asspull power up. First truly outrageous thing in Dragon Ball, and it's to presumably end the best(?) arc. Disappointed.

Actually, the way the "super divine water" works (a deadly poison either killing the consumer or awakening his latent abilities) is more reminiscent of the Dune saga than of Yuyu Hakushô.

Indeed, it invalidates all of Ten's hardwork. BUT it happens only thanks to the japanese "power of the group" (Ten won some time, Yajirobe made the climb, etc) and Goku's courage and force of will to take a drink that could lead him straight to his death (+ he actually fell into coma or something for a few hours or days if I remember well)

@gfsdfgsdgsdfgs I see. You can't be more right then, because almost nothing Toriyama wrote could be foreshadowed since he came up with it only when he was writing the chapter in question. (and the animation didn't bother "fixing" this since at that time they were running along). The only thing that connected to previous elements was the background drawing (the ôzaru face, like during Daimaô's final strike), I even thought it was trying to say: "Look, Goku just accessed his full "ape form" buff. Of course, it doens't make sense if you check the a-posteriori created power levels.
Plus, the rare times where the author had envisioned something beyond the next week of publication, it was to be changed because of the readerships/publisher or personal editor's reception: the JUMP (or any prepublication magazine) contextisn't an iviting environment for planned writing.

It seemed to me that the association of efforts from various characters has often been used in Dragon Ball even if Goku was given the "decising role" (or rather the killing move) either on the author's or an editorial's decision. It culminates in the way the final villain is killed, I could say?

I had meant as a power up that came out of nowhere, without foreshadowing, that changed everything to allow the protagonist to win after a lot of build up. I wasn't speaking of the nature of the water, rather the asspull writing to do this.

Was that a recurrent theme in Dragon Ball? If so, sure, I must be forgetting and hadn't recognized it while watching before. That being said, if Goku's newfound strength wasn't such a random element introduced like super water then this would have been a much more satisfying moment. Rather, it showed Ten work non stop only to be saved by plot convenient writing. That's something that I see as an issue.

Looking back my post was furious and ranting so I apologize for making anyone read that. Still, although I wrote it that way I feel that the points within it still stand.

@Rei366 Good point, but I would also like to say that, in my view, this was the first decision that was inexcusably bad. I don't view anything else Toriyama did in Dragon Ball to be remotely as weak. Not everything needs foreshadowing, but one should at least attempt to keep what's happening within the known universe if a new element is being introduced to turn the tides. Of course this is my opinion.

I do appreciate your take and I do see the "power of the group" although sometimes it can be overshadowed by Goku dealing the final blow or saving the day which led to me missing it outright.

King Piccolo is getting his ass beat left, right, up, and down. Even while powered up, Goku is still keeping up with him. You know, this kind of drastic change makes the ultra sacred water that Goku gulped down seems something completely random and unthought of. Like a useless plot device that will never be brought up. But regardless, the fight is interesting so far. It is fun to watch King Piccolo's egotistical face morph into one of horror as he realizes Goku isn't kidding around.

I find it weird that none of the gang explains what's going on to Lunch whenever her personality switches. You would think someone would realize that sooner.

Wow so here we have the first scream power up in the series.
I agree with the super sacred water being a plot device, it could have been at least mentioned before.

It makes me so happy to see how powerful Goku is now! He is actually beating Piccolo. I was expecting both to receive critical damage, but at this point, I'd believe Goku will win this - unless Piccolo still has some tricks in his sleeve.

Piccolo is a fool like Pomput. They both underestimated Goku like he is nothing. Pomput was done for with Goku's first attack and now Piccolo just lasted for long as he is a very strong monstrous being. He will see his doom in no time.

Piccolo took several hits from Goku and still didn't understood his strength. He thinks he can take him down by just on hard hit!! So long for his being invincible. Goku is now launching Kamehameha Wave. If Master Roushi can destroy the moon with it, think how much dangerous it can be if Goku does it with his current strength.

Haha, I was amazed to see how Bulma and Yamcha were scared when Launch was sneezing. I never thought some will be scared to see the friendly launch, haha. Like they are adjusted with the other Launch too much.

What a start to this fight! It seems like an early version of a fight in DBZ. Drum got beat by Goku with one kick and that was amazing! During the start of the fight Goku had the upper hand since we later find out that Piccolo was not using his full power because it causes him to age faster (I do recall that Piccolo's wish was to be young again and not eternally young so the assumption is that he will age over time again). Also, it looks like Piano got killed when Piccolo landed on him after one of Goku's attacks. Towards the end of this episode Piccolo does power up and punches Goku very hard thinking that he killed him but Goku ends up raising out of the crater ready to fire off a Kamehameha, things are REALLY picking up!

Was expecting more from the fight but at least the ending was super hype. Now that Piccolo has finally shown his true power hopefully he will actually try instead of yapping about it the whole time. In my opinion the power levels have already become pretty incomprehensible.
