She deserved it for neglecting Hikaru for the whole show, while she got it on with her kung-fu pacifist cousin.

Oh sure she's likeable, but she pulls on Hikaru's strings for two years and then plops right back in after all that time and goes okay I'm readdy to be with you now, Kaifun was an ass all this time, oh well? She made her choices and has to live with them.

Good for Hikaru and Misa.

Except it's sort of more like he tried to keep both of them and then minmay realised how unworthy she was...

Still glad though because I was rooting for Misa <3

As for minmay... yes, she was selfish, but you can't completely blame her. It's not like Hikaru didn't totally ignore her when she fell ill. Or that he didn't show up at her movie's premier. What was she supposed to think? It's not like her selfishness seemed to have been that challenged anyways.

But yes. I just noticed someone was watching the series which is ironic as I recently finished it and... well... I love the cast. It did a great deal of good with its characters and I hope I can see cameos, references, or descendants in the other macross series. :D (I will be disappointed otherwise.)

Perfect ending.

Hikaru chose the right woman!

Minmay matured (and reverted to childlike state at the same time, typical!)

Half the cast DIDNT DIE.

I dont know how the movie could top this.

Nice ending... though I would have prefered it if Minmay had commited suicide during her downward spiral, it would be a much more powerfull ending for her IMO... anyway a mediocre series all in all, it had some good ideas and some good moments, it knew how to touch you and even how to keep you interested but still it was unsuitably silly and at times even moronic, not to mention it had Kaifun and has generally aged horribly.

Those are pretty much my opinions. I was a Minmay fan until her cousin showed up, damn I wanted him dead(preferably in the hands of a Zetrandi) in the next episode but unfortunately he lived and the creators of this anime butchered Minmay. But I must say the greater story about humans and aliens was pretty good, esp as a background for Macross Frontier.

And I forgot this

Misa ended up with Hikaru, I can't ask for more, well... Kaifou's slowly dead but hey! at least he didn't show up.

This was quite the series. I watched it only because I wanted to watch Frontier, but the romance and music really got to me.

I am extremely pleased with Ichijou's choice of Misa as Minmay was quite the bitch.
A 28 year old anime though, they sure don't make anime like they used to.

Even though this series had some really trying episodes and characters, I can see why it's such a classic. It's full of great moments and battles and wonderful ideas. There's nothing I can say about Kaifun that hasn't already been said by everyone else that hates his guts. I didn't hate Minmay in the end, honestly after the first third of the show she didn't bothe me that much at all. Sometimes Hikaru annoyed me more. I chalk Minmay's problems up to her being sheltered, spoiled and childish. I chalk Hikaru's problems up to being a generally weak and crappy dude around women. Great kick ass pilot. Sucky dude. Regardless, great series. I understand Macross Frontier infinitely more now.

Okay finally back to Misa and Hikaru which was a relief actually. I have nothing against Minmay ending up with Hikaru anyway but IMHO after all she'd been through in this series Misa is the better choice of the two.

Whew finally finished rewatching this one after a looong time. I'm glad I watched this series again, I 'm gonna miss those unique ideas and funny moments again. XD

Finally got around to finishing this series. It took me around 4 days to finish, but what a journey it has been!

Some few things I'd like to say:

First, I was shocked, saddened, and disappointed by the death of my favorite character of the series, Roy Focker! I felt he died way too prematurely and his character could have contributed more to the series.

Damn you Pineapple Salad!!...he didn't even get to try a bite...

I also didn't expect Kakizaki to get killed off. I didn't expect a comic relief character like that to get axed in that manner.

As for our love triangle of the show, I must say Hikaru made the right choice when he decided to be with Misa at the end. I didn't like Minmay from the start, and with the appearance of her cousin it certainly didn't help to make me appreciate her character better. It's only after the timeskip that she started to shine in a new light, when she starts realizing her feelings for Hikaru, though it still seemed kinda of sad that she only wants to be with Hikaru just as her career and relationship with Kaifun was going sour, but at least she seemed to have matured a bit.

In the end, Hikaru started to annoy me more than Minmay did when he started to neglect Misa for Minmay.

I was also a bit disappointed after the timeskip because they neglected Max too much and he didn't get that much screen time. He was my second favorite male character of the series (1st being Roy Focker, obv).

All in all, it was a great series with great characters. I'll surely miss marathoning this series.

And as Quamzin says, "We'll do some culture afterward!"

Wow, Minmay was actually able to come up with this decision at the end which means she matured a lot in these last episodes. But I've never expected this conclusion~
In Misa's place I wouldn't have stayed with Hikaru though. He acted like a total jerk with her and she would have deserved a better man.

This was a true classic and a wonderful ride for me. I enjoyed it especially the last 15 episodes. So much different than gundam at that time.
Some of the priceless moments will always be remembered by me for sure :D

Pretty good series, it had some great scenes and I really liked Misa as a character so I'm glad she won out. Hikaru and Minmay bothered me quite a bit, but in the end Hikaru is probably the character whose actions REALLY annoyed me.

But, at the end of the day this was still a great series with many a great moment and iconic characters. Good stuff.

I did enjoy this series quite a bit, although I thought there were a lot of ups and downs.

The last arc of the show was great and I liked how they were basically able to use all those episodes to flesh out the characters.

Minmay I just couldn't end up liking, but that ended up making the ending better as far as I'm concerned.

I'll be looking forward to watching other Macross series

Epic line, indeed. And most of the other "culture" jokes were quite good too.

On the whole, the show was good though it could've been better if not for Kaifun who annoyed the hell out of me by just appearing on the screen. Not to mention his ridiculous speeches about love & peace and how the millitary was to be blamed for everything.

Otherwise, there were some awesome characters like Max,Milia,Focker,Misa,etc...The Zentradi trio who snuck on Macross's board also kept entertaining me to the end too.
Also, the soundtrack was great, especially the opening song.
"MAKUROS!!! MAKUROS!!" lol

Damn, this anime... Really a classic.
I watched a lot of anime, tv show and movie and for the first time i was rooting for a fictional character's love. Damn. And when i say rooting, i mean very very intense rooting (am i using this word right?) From episode 5 to episode 36. Damn. And thank god, Hikaru choosed Misa.

Thank you, Hikaru, for choosing the superior girl. Minmay was a stupid bitch for most of the series and ended up friendzoning one of the best mecha protagonists for a retarded hippy that doesn't know the difference between his ass and mouth.

Really enjoyed the series, especially coming out of the original Gundam a while ago which was inferior in almost every aspect. Gotta watch Do you Remember Love next and then work on Plus and Zero.

Well I gt say i'm glad it ended as it ended. It wasn't made clear but it seems like Misa and Hikaru got bit more time to get together for now and Minmay plans to join them later on once she discover true meaning of her songs.
Even though i'm bit disappointed that It wasn't made clearer that Misa and Hikaru end up together (kiss or something) and also that old good Macross felt victim to mere rebels. Well i can imagine that it was planned in preparation for the "new" Macross.

reiterating what everyone has said already, its good he picked Misa. He was left hanging, played with for 2 years, did she really think when all went to shits with kaifun that she could just take up Hikaru as a backup?
Once you make your choices, you have to live with them. Theres no way in hell i'll just stick around as a backup option for someone who picked someone else over me.
Oh, and kaifun needed to die.... im slightly dissapointed the anime didn't show his ass being eaten by a missile.

If I recall past interviews, TV series Hikaru didn't pick Misa because he loved her the most, but because he realized he and Minmay had an incompatible way of life and Minmay "belonged to everyone" (since you know, she's the actual one who transcends and becomes a legend). He loved both about equally. He had a future with Misa.

This turns out the best for Minmay whose real love is her songs, so that was a proof of love for Hikaru to point it out. She was going through a difficult period and she was emotionally vulnerable (after all she's still a teenager) and he took advantage of this. This helped her grow up and become the beloved icon of the franchise.

I don't know how Misa put up with him. No wonder Roy always wins in popularity contests.

Anyway, the three of them are close friends. They had a nice scene together in Flash Back 2012 that features a full grow up Minmay.

^ You summed up the way I felt. Actually, I feel like Lynn actually matched Hikaru better (sure, I personally liked and respected Misa more, but I don't think she was better for Hikaru), but because of circumstances, it would be a dead end.

I realized what the show was getting at when Lynn said "let's go back to how things were before". The only way is forward, not backward, and that's what Misa offered. If the choice is to retreat into the past or to advance boldly to the stars, then it's obvious what should be chosen. Lynn came around to realize this too, and hence she finally gave up on Hikaru.

Sure, I like Minmay. She wasn't built to be an adorable character to begin with, but I think that just makes her more human. In the end, all she wanted was someone to support her and not having to bear all the responsibilities she was laden with alone. I'm more happy with Hikaru ending up with Misa, but I'm not that cold to just say "shut up and deal with it" to a young girl who is a key player in the fate of the entire mankind and aliens too. A fate she didn't ask for. Anyway, someone had to lose in this love polygon and it was Minmay. Makes me kind of sad, really. She deserved happiness too.

One of my favourite series of all time. It was great rewatching it, reaffirming, that despite the dated animation it still is an epic story that absolutely deserves the title 'classic'. I really hope that more people come around to being open minded to watching older stuff. There are so many great older series to enjoy.

The ending feels even more compelling, knowing that more than a quarter of a century later, the sons and daughters of Macross have indeed travelled to faraway stars and galaxies spreading culture. Series like Macross Seven and Frontier portray how humanity and it's culture are fullfiling Global's plan for survival of the human race.

Huh, wow. I was entirely expecting a generic Hikaru/Minmay ending.
The only thing I can really complain about with this was the animation quality. Going by its age, it's pretty understandable, I guess. The last arc felt out of place to me. It helped to develop the characters much more, and by the end of it, I was more interested in what everyone was doing than the combat. Maybe it would've been better as a shorter separate series? You can't just skip two years and entirely change everything 2/3rds of the way through.
I really enjoyed this, and am definitely going to get more Macross on the go in the future.

ABSOLUTELY, you have proven me wrong. Because of what you think I have completely changed my OPINION of the show and it proves that everyone voted after rewatching the anime like me and loved it.

No, I think you misunderstood me. I have no intention of trying to change your mind, you seem very set in disliking it anyway and that's fine. What I'm trying to prove is that your assertion that people only like the show based on nostalgia is wrong. It is very much possible that someone could check out the show when they are older and still like the show.

I agree that there were some...weird choices when it comes to the characters and plot. But, honestly, the show didn't take itself overly seriously and created, imo, some memorable characters despite the fact that they were strange at times.

As for your individual points: I'm guessing you are saying Minmay calling him a coward for not wanting to become a soldier? I hope you realize that this is more common than you'd think in a situation like this where people are in a war with a threatening presence. It's kind of like avoiding the draft in WWII, people would more than likely look at you as a bit of a coward....that's just how it is.

The Minmay having a relationship with her cousin thing isn't really all that strange. I believe in Japan that this is actually acceptable and it's always a good idea to keep the differences in culture in mind when watching something. And, even If I'm wrong about the legal issues.....it's entertainment. I really don't care.

It seems the series was too much for your suspension of disbelief. It happens. But, I will say that a lot of my enjoyment was because of weirdness of the show and not in spite of it.

Sorry about the answer, I don't want to pick a fight. About the suicide thing:
In episode 4, Minmay wants to die along Hikaru by going out to space (she thinks nobody is going to rescue them). Hikaru tells her not to be stupid and she respond he doesn't want to do it because he is a coward and like 20 seconds later they are rescued. The cousin thing also, maybe in some countries it isn't so weird but they are blood relatives.

Yeah, I don't see any of those examples as a problem? It's not like she KNEW someone would come to rescue them, especially not so soon. It's also not all that uncommon for someone to be in what they believe to be a hopeless situation and kill themselves because of that. Not to mention the fact that Minmay was probably in a state of duress at that time as well, stress makes people act kind of crazy at times. And, Minmay is a very emotional character so, if anything, that scene is her in character.

And, as I said before, incest is not a flaw in and of itself. It's like saying Koi Kaze is crap because of it's theme. It's not a flaw, so much as it's something you don't personally agree with.

As far as the GiTS thing, I probably don't need to mention that Macross IS considered a classic. Having around the same rating as SAC isn't particularly insulting to either show.

"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job."
