This was a huge disappointment for me...
12 episodes..to 6...and then to finally just one OVA...made me open the window and shout out loud "WHAT THE HELL, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!?"
to be short: The animation was good and highly praisable, the characters par excelans, but the story and setting was incredibly cliche, uninteresting and predictable at best...which lowered it's rank on my list by 3.5 points...

But, something...something did come out of BRS that actually was of use to me...
It's the reviews I've read about it, especially the one asking me, how far would I go to save my friendship?
...being all cocky tonight, I answered to myself like an atheist to a religious question:
"I wouldn't move a finger..."
I stopped scrolling
and that's when it hit me
...there is a reason the people from my past aren't with me here anymore, and it's my fault for letting that part of me die.
I'm going...I'm bringing the friendship back and nothing's stopping me

Signed:
-Mario Pehar-
(Yes, that's my real name and I'm that serious, should I thank you BRS? Thank you.)

Art Style = Awesome
Voice = Good
Characters = Fine
Story = Truthfully boring and unclear/confusing.

I've been wanting to watch this series since the rumor came out on internet, but the result is truly disappointing. It starts with Black Gold Saw and Black Rock Shooter fighting intensely with each other, and then Mato and Yomi first meeting. I have a high expectation for this, but really, I've never thought it would be so... lame. They don't even make a sequel for this? How do they expect us to understand, then?

I give 5 out of 10; it doesn't even worth to get 7 just because the art is awesome.

I liked it, I loved the animation and I thought the cut scenes with the fighting were pretty cool, I thought it was suppose to be something like the portrayal of their friendship or something, like they played together then eventually Yomi didn't really like that Mato had a new friend and was being ignored, kind of like a parallel between the real world and that other world. It was a fun story, but I'm definitely not satisfied with it just ending there.

I loved it but I really hope that they make more of it, it can't end there! (oh and then yomi was back at the end of the credits but then Yu was probably feeling left out). It was a great opening imo but there does need to be more to this anime!

i'm assuming they are gonna slowly uncover everything either through the upcoming game or a possible upcoming anime. i really enjoyed the battle scenes and the story just simply cause it left me with a lot to think about. i really don't get why people are disappointed. from what i read, plenty were disappointment of it going from a full season to a half and then to a single OVA. honestly its not really that bad even if they aren't gonna follow up with an anime. it's come a long way from a random idea some guy decided to draw on whim.

Yeah, I agree.
To people who were disappointed with this: I'm sorry but your expectations killed your enjoyment.

I actually loved this. The portrayal of friendship that was presented here is something can identify myself with. The "lack of place for a third person" is pretty common. So I thought the premise was great. As for the execution, I admit it, it was so-so. I liked the parallelism with that other world but the way they explained it was quite meh because it left so many things in the air. If you interpret it as non-linear storytelling as someone here suggested, some things make more sense but others stop making sense. But it's almost impossible to miss the basic understanding of the analogy so I don't think the execution was so bad. The artwork was also amazing.
This is a solid 8 for me and it would be more if things had been a little more tied up in the end.

To the people who find it confusing, so did I the first time round but I watched it again and it clicked.

The OVA was two stories mixed together:
1. Mato and Yomi at school and their friendship
2. Black Rock Shooter VS Dead Master

You see clips of both throughout, the scenes with Black Rock Shooter tend to reflect what it happening in the school story and you may be inclined to believe the stories are happening simultaneously (Which is what I did the first time).

When in fact, it is so much more simple than that. Everything that happens in the school life between Mato and Yomi is what happens first. Mato is then confronted with the Black rock shooter and she turns into the Black rock shooter to save Yomi who has turned into the dead master. Now, every single scene you see throughout the OVA within that 'other world' occurs AFTER that point. Hopefully that clears up some understandings about what happened.

Anyways, I adored the OVA though it took 2 tries to fully understand it, I felt as if it was beautifully done and their friendship seemed so relatable to what happen with some people in real life. The fight scenes and character design were fantastic and it was a visual masterpiece for me.

10/10

I really hope there is a sequel soon.

Average entertainment. I don't think there's that whole mystery within the story; it's just a typical friendship tale which inserts a metaphorical fight between its characters to be original and interesting.

And it is, but for some reason it doesn't work. As had read already, the whole OVA is more a thing of style than substance. I didn't find any of the characters appealing enough, and the development was very cliched and rushed.

Has good moments. I am weird enough to appreciate the scene where Mato wakes her little brother up; very, very nice daily scene. The concept is quite good too, and in general I think it develops fairly well a story set in reality; with its cons though, I sometimes wonder if high school Japanese girls are THAT schmaltzy in real life. Must be a cultural thing.

So my opinion is quite mixed here. It's mildly enjoyable and all, I like what it brings up and think it has a lot of potential, but the way it's told makes a waste out of it. There's always something lacking in there.

How are people confused? It was told out of order, but in a straightforward fashion. Was incredibly easy to follow.

It was okay, I felt that the directing was pretty good. I enjoyed the cuts between worlds, that along with the soundtrack created an awesome atmosphere. Everything else was sup-par at best.

Overall, this show is awesome. I like the aesthetics as well as the bgms and the voices behind. I also enjoyed the random scene switching from the school days to the dark days and back to the school days and back again to the dark days. The character development is okay for me as well.

Spam more blue stars all over the screen, will ya.

It was good, but something was lacking. They overextended character development, but those battles were some of the best stuff I've seen in quite some time.
Also, great OST.
"Tonight, I sit in the eye of the storm. As fire boils around me, I press forward, winds and lightning lashing my wings. I am no match for what I face. Yet I will not back down, and though fear may place it's stranglehold on my heart, courage will see me through. With tears in my eyes, I hit full throttle. My engines become an inferno, and my weapons light up, awaiting my command.

If I die tonight, I will do so fighting for everything I believe in."

I decided to watch this on the strength of some artwork I saw.

I thought there would be more of this but I guess that's coming!

So, I loved the aniation but it as a little disjointed at first. I was starting to wonder if it wasnt just some crazy converse advert but it came together at the end.

Need more!

I dont get why is this getting many mixed to bad reviews... maybe because it was supposed to be a full anime in the beginning and it kept being delayed etc etc, but for me i just came in without knowing what it was and i actually liked it. Yea there is so much you can cramp in a 50 minute and i mean it is always going to feel fast passed but non the less the show got me wanting to know more and the animation, fights, etc was decent and modern. These variables are the ones that make people want to watch... so still i dont get why people did not like it. =/

I loved it, I enjoyed it the first milli-second to the last, I'm not sure if it's because of the 50 minutes duration, but at one point I actually FELT like I was there beside Mato and Yomu, just enjoying life as it goes on without any troubles. In a way this OVA is beautiful, but there's so many more things they could've done, it has definitely left a special place in my heart though

I enjoy watching it, but what intrigue me the most is the ending. Yuu relationship with Mato became distant and foreshadow another battle Black Rock Shooter has to fight in. It brought me to this theme that in a friendship there are good and bad times and not everyone can experience happiness at the same time.

Black Rock Shooter was awesome, I freaking love it. It was kind confusing for the first 20 minutes with Black Rock Shooter fighting Gold Saw and Dead Master but after that, it made perfect sense. And I love the art, especially BRS's design (and I may get killed for saying this but she looks way better than Hatsune Miku >=D). There's still lots of questions unanswered like how that world BSR is in even exists and even why she exists and such.

Dammit, I want moar Black Rock Shooter, come on sequel! =D *pray*

I watched the OVA again a little while ago to see if I could understand it better. And I sure did.

Once I got past all the queries from the first time I saw it, the whole story made so much more sense to me. The whole flow of the plot line made no sense at first, but once you give it another go, you should be able to piece it together. What made the OVA great was that you had to figure it all out on your own, instead of being spoon fed. I realized that the scenes from the BRS world and the regular world were mixed together quite well, actually. They made it easier to reflect on the situations going on at that point in time. For example, the scene where STR shows up and jumps down from a cliff. Right after that scene, we see Mato and Yuu getting closer to having a friendship. It was almost like Yuu/STR was making her move. Simple scenes like that helped me understand what the hell was going on.

I think most people weren't happy with the fact that so much wasn't explained the way they wanted it to. Seems like we're just so used to being fed all the information we need without having to figure it out ourselves.

Regarding the Black Gold Saw/Black Rock Shooter scene, I think it's supposed to be an opening or idea of what the sequel could be like. I would think that it's the last scene for the BRS world.

Wow that was really cool. The setting and art are amazing. I was pretty confused about the two stories at first, but after reading through the forum it all makes sense. Tot think that Yomi would get that depressed and even disappear. I understand that she felt abandoned and alone, but maybe you should've said something then?

Anyway, after this I can't wait for the TV series coming up January next year! =D

This OVA was very promising but like many have said it lacked something. I'd say it was the lack of a conclusive ending and how exactly the two worlds were related. Did Yomi create that world in her jealousy? If so, why does Yuu appear in that world? Well at least I had a feeling it was her since the character style sorta matches.

In the end we start to see Yuu experiencing what appears to be the same thing Yomi was experiencing. Quite a strange way to end the OVA since another plot has been introduced. Anyways, I thought the artwork was fantastic but the animation got sloppy at times during the "normal" world scenes.

Glad they're creating a TV show out of this. Hopefully they'll improve the animation quality as well.

Finally got around watching this. I honestly went in with no expectations due to the kind of negative reception towards the OVA, but now after watching it myself I have to say I really liked it as a short story.

It's assumable that the BRS scenes were the inner fight symbolizing the emotional bond of friendship between Matou and Yomi. The opening scene with Black Gold Saw however had me a bit confused, making me believe that it's something not chronically related or has/will happen(ed) in the past/future. Perhaps something to look forward to in the upcoming series?

If I had to point out something negative, it would be the last scene with its abrupt ending. I don't see how Matou got in contact with BRS, as I was sure myself that she served as some sort of symbolization or character in an alternate universe. And what drove Matou to come to that 'special' location in the first place? Perhaps just a desperate act to search for her, even though it might be in vain? Assumptions and interpretations, this OVA is full of it.

Now with the ending itself, the last short scene after the credits should confirm that Yomi did indeed return at the end (not sure how though, did she just reappear out of thin air?) but this time around it was implied that Yuu was the one being jealous and sad about being 'left out'. In my opinion this goes a bit against her characteristics shown in all the previous scenes, but whatever. It might be explained in the future.

But all in all it's a nice little story for a 50 minute OVA with a good moral and a solid 8/10 is in place. Despite the less appealing character designs for the upcoming TV series, I'm still looking forward for more material to be seen in the BRS universe.

I actually understood the whole thing by just watching it once so I don't really get the confusion on here. I just didn't get who that girl was (the one that had guns as arms). Though I probably have to complete the whole TV series to fully understand it. Time to wait until its done! (I hate watching ongoing) :D

I'm not sure what to say.
I liked it, but I'm confused as hell. I get the chronological order and things like that, but it's really disappointing that they left a lot of things unexplained.

The art style was amazing in both worlds, and I really liked BRS's design, she looks pretty cool.
The voice acting was obviously good, Hanazawa Kana did a great job again just like with Mayushii (S;G).
The characters were likeable, especially Mato of course, she was really cute.
The story itself was about friendship, jealousy, hatred and the pain of losing a friend. I could connect with all these emotions which are part of our everyday life so this aspect of the story was well done. The other part was like I said before really confusing and I felt that they were trying too hard to "connect the two worlds", the action didn't really seem to fit in a story like that even though it looked awesome.

All in all, this anime gets a 7/10 from me for the characters, the art, and the action scenes. Onto the series now, I really hope it fixes the mistakes this show had, it had some potential.

I don't see what the confusion was about. It seemed pretty straightforward to me. In the end, no one wants to be that third wheel and feel left out, which is probably how Yuu feels by the end now that Mato found Yomi and the two of them got their friendship back on track.
