My pick would be Dorohedoro. It's a cool show, but someone who doesn't watch anime may not know what the hell is going on, so it'd be a bad intro.

Pretty much any idol anime.

Any of the Monogatari series is one of my favorites. But I understand that people hate it. The text on the screen, confusing story, fanservice, the famous scenes, characters with very extreme personalities, dense dialogues.

Patlabor 2 is a great film and despite the "2" it can be watched standalone but it's VERY slow. It's even hard to recommend to people who already like anime.

- Its just not anime enough, its very cartoonish. Not a great intro plus Its likely I would just get bullied since it leans on the "childish" side. I'll wait for the long essays and reviews to reach to them.

Angel's Egg
- Its a complete advent garde mess, it takes an analyst maniac to piece it together, not even the author. It Would be hard for a normal fan to appreciate but I do

All of them. I never try to get people in to anime. If they want to get in to anime they 99% do it them self. Im not guessing who is in to what or not.

And all anime I love is utter trash according to MAL so there is that as well.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, because the humor is just too fast paced and dependent on fast reading that most people would miss 90% of what's even going on.

Monogatari series for reasons already stated above.

Tatami galaxy because it's hard to keep up with the speed of the dialogues even if you're used to reading subtitles.

Kekkai Sensen because from what I remember it was episodic so it might be difficult for a new fan to keep up with and follow. Kyokou Suiri for similar reason but additionally it can get a little slow at times.

Maybe The Apothecary Diaries. It might come across as a bit bland, and dull out the whole 'new toy phase' of someone wanting to skim the surface of a new interest.

Yeah, it can be pretty hard to recommend an anime to someone who hasn't watched any before.

I just recently had this conversation with a friend who was trying to get one of his friends into anime. We both think that Dorohedoro is an outstanding anime, however it's mostly a visual experience for a new anime watcher. It'd be hard for them to get any sort of story out of this wild ride. I struggled to follow wtf was going on in the show for what it's worth lol. I still plan on reading the manga after the next portion of anime comes out.

I watched the Patlabor movie timeline about a year ago now. It was incredible and I loved it. A close friend of mine who has been around anime a lot longer than I have recommended it to me. Specifically stating that Patlabor 2 was the movie that he would regularly return to as a standalone piece. After watching the series I totally understand that... To the thread's point though, it's not something that I would recommend to a new viewer.

Choosing out of the hat here, I'd avoid recommending Serial Experiments Lain to a new anime watcher. Even though it's one of my favorites that I find myself wanting to re-watch on a whim all the time. Most avant-garde anime probably fall into this category. I do enjoy the genre quite a bit, but understand that it's not for everyone.

@Serafos Can relate. I pretty much my interest in anime growing up because of shows like Mermaid Melody, Pretty Rhythm, and Aikatsu (while watching some other stuff of course), but there's now way I'd recommend them now to the people around me, especially when they mostly care about basic shounen and not much else. 💀

Like... ecchi aside, it is oddly informative when it comes to anime tropes and anime in general.

But because it is so heavily invested in ecchi, I'm sure it would just corrupt people, and there's already enough of us.

Mushoku Tensei, Monogatari, Kill la Kill. 3 of my top 10 anime but all 3 would have me judged pretty badly more than anything if I introduced these shows to friends of mine who are completely unfamiliar with all anime. I would probably add Prison School too since in high school, I watched this with a friend, this show being their first anime ever, and they were just dying of laughter but questioning what on earth I was watching on the way to school and if all anime were like that. I have no regrets, but don't see myself doing that again, ever.

I'd avoid ecchi or suggestive (Miru Tights, Strike Witches, Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete), older graphics stuff (Versailles no Bara, Oniisama e, original LotGH), controversial (Nagatoro), stuff with lots of references to other anime (Lucky Star), complicated/deep/metaphorical (Shoujo Kakumei Utena, etc.)

Mnemosyne. The sexual aspects of it would probably put most people off, and if it didn't, the blood and gore probably would.
Elfen Lied. I mean, that first episode is pretty brutal, at least it would be for anyone who hasn't watched any anime, lol.
Strawberry Panic!, because yuri. And it's melodramatic at times, which not everyone cares for.

There's a whole swath of anime I enjoy that rely a lot on referencing other anime. I'd rather not show a newbie something that would only make them feel lost. These are mostly comedy shows, so the jokes just wouldn't land.

Most of the anime I've watched so far. Either they're too good, so the person might be disappointed by the following anime. Too crazy, so it might not suit their taste or the anime has too many episodes.

I know a few I can recommend without having to worry about it, because you can't do something wrong with them.

Basically any ecchi and anything that's really really weird. Like Penguindrum and Sarazanmai weird. Also nothing where there's a lot of dialogue to keep up with, like Katanagatari . Especially if there's no dub. I'd never tell a first time person to watch anything where they might have to pause a lot. Aside from that, anything is fair game.

Onimai (I am now your sister).

It's Advanced Anime 401, not Beginner's Anime 101. What I mean is that if you understand what they're trying to get across, it's actually reasonably wholesome and a pretty good anime. If you look at the OP or with a biased eye, you're just going to think it's about the worst that anime has to offer, and anyone who is even a little tiny bit predisposed to thinking anime is just for degenerates is going to have their feelings validated - correct or not.

I showed my mother "Sound! Euphonium", and she was a fan. That's the one I show people if I think they'd be interested in anime.

This question makes me realize that there's not a lot of anime I like that I would hard not recommend to someone getting into anime, because it really depends on the person's taste and what they'd be interested in. However, I'll say stuff like "Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei" and "Sarazanmai" just because I feel like with series like those you need to be more familiar with anime being anime. And "The Hakkenden" since I doubt most people would be familiar with old Japanese literature and be very into it/easily understand what's going on and the visuals might not do much for them (part of the reason why I liked it was because of the visuals). It also goes without question that hentai/ecchi stuff would not be on the table.

If someone isn't interested in anime to begin with, there's no point in showing them any. They just won't be interested. But if I had to pick an anime that I wouldn't recommend, even though I like it, it would be Yuri on Ice.

While I clearly agree with the thesis, I find it rather amusing and telling that there is such a concept as "advanced anime watching". I can't decide if what it says is complimentary or not, but it sure does say something.
