Warner Bros. Japan announced a new anime project for Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) manga on Wednesday, revealing a teaser visual (pictured). The new anime, titled Hokuto no Ken: Fist of the North Star, is celebrating the manga's 40th anniversary.

Buronson and Hara serialized the action drama in Weekly Shounen Jump from 1983 to 1988 and compiled into 27 volumes. Shueisha later reprinted the series in 15 collector's edition volumes in 1991–1992 and 15 bunkoban volumes in 1997–1998. Hokuto no Ken has sold a cumulative 100 million copies of its volumes worldwide.

Toei Animation produced a television anime adaptation, which aired in 109 episodes from October 1984 to March 1987. A second season aired from March 1987 to February 1988, followed by a three-episode original video anime from July 2003 to May 2004.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in October 2020 and shipped the ninth volume on June 27, with the tenth volume planned for a September 26 release.

Coamix published the first two volumes of an 18-volume new edition on Wednesday. The third and fourth volume will go on sale on September 20, and subsequent volumes will be released on the 20th of each month.

Synopsis
In 199x, the world was engulfed in the blaze of nuclear war.

With the Ocean drying up and Earth torn asunder, all life seems to be lost but humans survived stubbornly. However, what dominated the post-apocalyptic world was sheer violence. The remaining humanity was split into two groups: those who kill and take whatever they can and those who are exploited.

When all hope seems lost for the weak, a man in ragged cloth appears. He is Kenshiro, the rightful successor of the Hokuto Shinken martial arts with seven studs-like scars in the shape of the Big Dipper. His journey to becoming a legendary savior begins! (Source: Warner Bros. Japan, edited)

Why do they keep on adapting trash from the 80s and 90s, like it's still good enough for 2023? That garbage was a product of it's era, times have changed, and now it's laughably bad. Everytime I watch something from that era, I'm always laughing at how these anime are still held in high regard.

Well, admittedly, some of the newer stuff is pretty bad, and stuff like Fist of the North Star is pretty different than most anime that realease today. I agree there's a reason for it, but there's a market (per the old watchers, the new watchers who would be interest per it's legacy, such as Jojo). This property speciffically must be popular enough. I know they released a FotNS (HnK) rythm workout game or something last year, so that must have been well received.
Could also be a producer's personnal taste.

@Bidoof_PMD-EOS Legacy is an important thing here - I in fact am one of those people who watched it because of Jojo. Though really, someone who's all "it's bad because it's old!" like the guy you're respondign to doesn't really have an opinion worth listening to, imo.

@Fortress_Maximus Same. I will watch it regardless, but it'd be fantastic to see an experienced studio delivering a high quality show fitting modern standards and being faithful to the source material.

I can totally see Studio Orange being capable of doing such anime adaptation.

@TARDISES People who despise some anime because it's old are just as silly as people who despise some anime because it's new. These are just childish immature "radical" takes in an attempt to look cool and edgy.

@Fortress_Maximus I'm wondering if this is another reboot of an anime adaptation, how much of a reboot it will be for the "you're already dead" stuff among modern audiences.

I hope they animate the prequels and the side stories as well. And is animated by someone who can animate heavy details muscles like JoJo animators with all those things attached to it's characters.

@Oppai_Loli_God you act as though storytelling has evolved a millennium since the 80s. Storytelling hasn’t changed that much.

@ReaperCreeper Same. Aren't Hokuto no Ken pachinko machines popular?

They play cgi gifs from the last Souten adaptation whenever you're spinning.

Between this and Kinnikuman, maybe we're finally getting more 80s remakes. Hopefully better than the CGI Saint Seiya.

@MovieDogg Conventions change with consumer expectations. They may dislike stuff like cel animation and reused shots, or the enemy of the week/month format of older series, or the depiction of gender roles.

They didn't articulate a specific point so it's hard to tell.

It's probably going to be an OVA or ONA (most likely the latter), probably a good idea to release it as a Netflix exclusive as well.

No way this can air in Japan uncensored today or even as censored as it once was back then with the TV anime.

@Lucifrost Cels? Yeah, modern anime can't appreciate that. Reused shots? Acting like that's not used anymore when even big name anime do them is crazy.

I'm not exactly the only one saying that. Someone tried to explain why someone else dislikes old anime. My own point was that I don't buy such an excuse, because a remake of an old anime would not be an old anime.

@Lucifrost I don’t understand how they can think that everything from that period is low quality, but somehow everything nowadays is high quality. It is very much a spectrum of quality in all eras. I’ve noticed that the anime industry only remakes stuff if there’s a source material, as you don’t see them remaking the original Gundam no matter how many times western fans ask.

@Hoppy Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the Fist Of The North Star remake turns out to be an ONA on Netflix since Warner Bros. Japan is the same company that owns Bastard: Heavy Metal Fantasy and the JoJo series which are also on Netflix too.

@Fortress_Maximus Bikkurimen is a reboot of an old show that was an advertisement. https://myanimelist.net/anime/54914/Bikkurimen It also seems that the original Tokyo Mew Mew was the original meda franchise, with the manga running at the same time as the anime.
