Well? Should ketchup be refrigerated or not?

I say, yes. I've been storing ketchup bottles inside the fridge since 1981/82. And yet there are people out there that they don't.

Like my husband, I'm always finding opened ketchup bottles in the pantry, sometimes deep, deep inside the pantry and he's like "oh I was looking for that, thanks babe" before taking the plastic bottle from my hand and using it on let's say pasta.

I'm like dude WTH?! Open ketchup bottles they go inside the fridge. Period. He's always saying something like "I'll be fine" "I've being doing this for ever" "see this good" while putting a small sample on the tip of his index finger and smelling it/tasting it.

So whos right? Me or him?

It's safe to be stored outside the fridge...but keeping it cold will maintain its quality and taste better.

When I open a ketchup bottle then it takes me a good month to empty it, if not longer so I store the bottle in the fridge as soon as I open it. Have generally never heard of anyone who does not store opened ketchup bottles in the fridge.

No one is right or wrong, it's just a preference. I don't have a fridge in the house and have stored ketchup bottles for a long time and it didn't get spoilt.

I just put it in the fridge. Some recipes are probably fine unrefrigerated and some may not for as long.

The ketchup which I use is not in fridge and hasn't been, the cold temperature messes up and destroys the quality of the warm/hot food.
What's the point of making a warm toasts, hot french fries, some frozen pizza warmed in oven, just to put a freezing/cold ketchup on it? Than instead just wait 30 minutes for food to become cold and than enjoy it.

The bottles which are not yet opened are usually at my home-town house in the Porch where I would have few ketchup bottles, few mustard jars, some soda/beer and other products.

He is the right one, I am surprised that he has not developed the typical behaviour [which I've noticed through my friends, family and myself] to simply smell the bottle of ketchup or other product without tasting a sample, very usefull with milk.

The need to refrigerate ketchup depends on personal preference and the specific type of ketchup you are using. Unopened bottles of commercially produced ketchup, whether they are shelf-stable or require refrigeration, can generally be stored at room temperature until the expiration date printed on the bottle.
Once you open a bottle of ketchup, factors like temperature, humidity, and exposure to air can affect its quality. Many people prefer to refrigerate opened ketchup to maintain its taste and texture for a longer period. Refrigeration can help slow down the natural degradation process, preserve flavor, and inhibit the growth of bacteria. If you live in a warm or humid climate, refrigerating opened ketchup may be more important to prevent spoilage. - ChatGPT

I've always put open bottles of ketchup and other sauces in the fridge, but in diners and pubs it's left outside on the tables for people to serve themselves and it still taste fine, so i guess neither is wrong

I don't eat a lot of ketchup but I do think it should be refrigerated, especially in hot climates. Same with other sauces such as mayo and mustard. And regardless of food safety, hot ketchup is kinda gross for me.

Depends. Some Ketchup wont have a problem with that, others will have consistency problems if you leave it outside.

What? Heinz has consistency problems??

I've had heinz ketchup from outside fridge and it was fine (and yes it's delicious), but yeah, some ketchup turns to liquid (like water concistency) when left out, but generally that ketchup also taste gross, so just don't buy liquid ketchup

I have some basalmic glaze that instructs not to refrigerate. Basically it makes it too thick to squirt out if you refrigerate it.

That's just to make it last longer with more flavour but if it's kept out you actually taste the ketchup better for the time it's still fresh so both ways work depending how rate of much ketchup someone goes through.

Unusual for me because tomato ketchup has always been a beef hamburger condiment for me before I gave up eating beef and pork. Ketchup? I don't care about its existance. Ketchup doesn't have any strong umami flavor that I want.

Worchestershire sauce or any kind of Asian fish sauce with mayonnaise. That's how I roll. Just read the instructions for the condiments for storage. Oh, and don't forget fermented bean sauces and pastes.

Well he once told me that he has always done it that way, even back in the 80's while he was growing up in the USSR.
And yes they "had" ketchup back then in the Soviet Union, if you had the means and if you knew "a certain kind of people" if you know what I mean. But it was a rare treat, much like Bananas were.
We've had this "argument" for ages and ages, since before our eldest was born. He would say stuff like: You Americans had your ways of doing things, we Soviet had ours. Or, what doesn't kills you, makes you stronger.

Looking at some of the replies here, it looking like it's a "win" for team Dawizz :p 'cause until know he was "ahead" on this topic. Every since the time we went visit the USA like 5 years ago, just before the twins were born, and we went to a very normal American Dinner and he saw the Heinz bottles sitting there on top of the table and he just grabbed one and started saying, look babe, look, I was right, I was right! You do keep the ketchup outside. Yeah I had to keep my mouth shut, because Dinners have been doing this for like forever, long before I was born. I can't tell him that :p

I use tube type ketchup and I believe unopened ketchup can be stored at room temperature.

Opened ketchup is kept in the refrigerator. I keep it in the fridge because I live in a country where the temperature changes with the seasons, but if you live in a cooler country, I think it would be fine to store it at room temperature.

Before opening it can be stored in a cupboard. After opening you should store it in a fridge because you've now introduced contaminated air into the sample which can foster pathogen growth in the ketchup. Perhaps there is something to be said about the vinegar concentration of the ketchup - maybe it inhibits pathogen growth - but I would stick it in the fridge to be safe.

Ketchup can survive surprisingly long without refrigeration, due to preservatives. You won't find those on the ingredients list, because a lot of preservatives also serve as "natural flavoring".

I know they hide ingredients that way but I didnt know they hide preservatives under that label too. I would think it's acidity also helps preserve it.
