The 15th Anniversary Festival for the Mononoke anime series announced a movie on Saturday. Production company Twin Engine also posted an announcement promo, revealing the main staff, cast, and a teaser visual (pictured). The movie will open in theaters in Japan in 2023.
Kenji Nakamura (Kuuchuu Buranko, Tsuritama) is returning to direct the movie. Voice actor Takahiro Sakurai (Mob Psycho 100, Bakemonogatari) is reprising as Kusuriuri, the lead character. Twin Engine is credited for production. A crowdfunding campaign for the movie will launch on June 24.
Mononoke, a spin-off of the 2006 anthology Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror, aired in 12 episodes on Fuji TV's noitaminA programming block in Summer 2007. Nakamura directed the fantasy horror series at Toei Animation, with Takashi Hashimoto (C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control) serving as the character designer and chief animation director.
Cinedigm licensed the anime series in North America under its subsidiary New Video's Flatiron Film Company division in May 2014 and released it on DVD in July that year. Siren Visual licensed the title in Australia and New Zealand.
Synopsis
The "Medicine Seller" is a deadly and mysterious master of the occult who travels across feudal Japan in search of malevolent spirits called "mononoke" to slay. When he locates one of these spirits, he cannot simply kill it; he must first learn its Form, its Truth, and its Reason in order to wield the mighty Exorcism Sword and fight against it. He must begin his strange exorcisms with intense psychological analysis and careful investigative work—an extremely dangerous step, as he must first confront and learn about the mononoke before he even has the means to defeat it.
The Medicine Seller's journey leads him to an old-fashioned inn where Shino, a pregnant woman, has finally found a place to rest. The owner has reluctantly placed her in the last vacant room; however, as she settles in, it quickly becomes clear that the room is infested by a lethal band of mononoke, the Zashiki Warashi. With his hunter's intuition, the Medicine Seller begins his investigation to discover the Form, the Truth, and the Reason before the Zashiki Warashi can kill again. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
YO? Holy fucking shit dude so much good shit is coming out. First Tatami Galaxy comes back as Time Machine Blues, Trigun’s coming back, and now Mononoke? If Serial Experiments Lain gets some sort of remake or sequel that’d make me complete.
Very interesting. Not my favourite anime by any means but it was still a very good experience. Hope the movie recaptures the eccentricity and surrealism of the show.
Mononoke is one of the titles I least expected to get a new project... I thought people nowadays were not really interested in concepts like what Mononoke presents.. so I'm happy to hear this good news~ can't wait for it
The movie is coming out this year. I seriously cannot wait! It's been almost 20 years and I'm so excited to see what Nakamura can bring for us this time.
