If there’s any men that watches shoujo, or Shoujo AI, I’d like to know.

What was the first thing you guys watched that was related to those genres?

My first one was Cardcaptor Sakura.

I don't remember which one was my first shoujo anime, but when it appears something interesting, I pick up to watch.
I don't have any problem with this genre. Actually, it's pretty fun to watch other stuff out of my bubble.

Yes, I'm 16 years old now and I love shoujo. As you mentioned, Cardcaptor Sakura is also my favourite.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Kafka, Fu Xuan, Jingliu, Topaz and Huohuo.

Shoujo AI is basically yuri whose target audience is Male nowadays. U probably are refering to shonen AI instead

35 nearly. and yes I still enjoy shoujo, it can be a nice change of pace from action focused shows.
Ore monogatari was really good.
would like to see more focused on adult relationships like Wotakoi.

Why not? I'm 31. Although I don't like silly romances and generic reverse harems, there are still good things I appreciate and I wouldn't mind shoujo tag at all.
Such gems as Cardcaptor Sakura, Kaleido Star, Princess Tutu, Utena, Sailor Moon don't have age or sex restrictions. They are good for all.

same here. the old BANDAI/TRENDMASTERS wire core bendy body Sakura was among my first Anime dolls, about 20 years ago.

today, i have a 2017 reissue of TAKARA's early-2010's "Liccarize" Sakura Kinomoto, customized with an OBITSU 26cm. aftermarket doll body in place of her original, TAKARA Licca body.

still waiting on the day they get around to reissuing Tomoyo Daidouji (probably never gonna happen now)

I enjoy shoujo series more than the shounen crap we get nowadays, Sailor Moon, Sakura Card Captor, Precure, Fruits Basket etc. Even Shoujo Ai or Yuri. The anime I've watched from those genres (with some exceptions) usually are well written, fun and very entertaining.

Hell, doesn't even have to be Shoujo, Seinen anime like Non Non Biyori are far more appealing than anything I've ever watched.

I generally stick to action so most things that fall under shoujo just dont do it for me.
Ive watched a bunch of card captors, early sailormoon and even watched all of Shakugan no Shana and id say none of them are all that great.

For one action shoujo tend to focus on the worst aspects of any shonen, the romance.
And they don't do a better job at romance than shonens either which is the sad part. Spending so much time on characters blushing is just boring.

According to MAL the demographic of Nana, Natsume Yuujinchou, Hotarubi no Mori e, Kimi ni Todoke, Coquelicot-zaka kara, Asagao to Kase-san and so on are shoujo and I liked them all, though that doesn't mean I like all that is shoujo. For example I am of the few who didn't like Fruit Basket or Kaichou wa Maid-sama!. Shoujo is fine just like any other genre.

If we are talking about shoujo ai, there is for example Sweet Blue Flowers that I have been a lot of times on the verge of putting in my favourite anime. One of its characters is my forum avatar. (I have just ordered the manga a few weeks ago and waiting for its arrival)

Yes.

I'm 33 years old, will be 34 next year, and I fucking love Fruits Basket, Akatsuki no Yona, Full Moon wo Sagashite, NANA, and Ore Monogatari.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I recently finished CCS and have to sheepishly admit I was blown away by the story, characters, dub cast, magic system (turning the ordinary everyday surroundings into something magic) & themes of family/friendship and general wholesome vibe (with some taboo plots thrown in like same sex crushes & teacher/student relationships). When I read that there was romance in a show where the main character was eleven I thought it was ridiculous. I ate my words. I think CCS deals with young love, or infatuation or a crush might be a better phrase, incredibly well (eg Sakura's confession to Yukito is a masterclass in young romance). Easily Clamp's best work and a great shoujo franchise.

Fruits Basket 2019, Utena and Natsume's Book of Friends are all amazing shows also. Not very impressed with Maid-sama though.

On shoujo ai, Yuru Yuri and Assault Bouquet were both decent shows.

Yep favourite Shojo title is Yona of the Dawn. Favourite Josei title is Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū. Currently watching Cardcaptor Sakura and it's pretty enjoyable for what it is. As for first thing? IDK maybe Lovely Complex or Kimi ni Todoke? A romance title of some sort.

Grown man here, with 71 shoujo watched and counting.

Rationale: Shoujo story telling emphasizes the social relations and emotional side, more like describing a scene's emotional construct than a linear plot progression. I find this far more interesting than action and story driven forward pushing of a heroes journey story. IRL I'm mildly emotional stunted so this doubles as learning material and therapy. Shoujo stories explain emotions and show how to express them, just what the doctor prescribed.

Favorites: Utena, Nana, Natsume, Rose of Versailles, Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Oniiisama e..., Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou. Note: Tutu and Chihayafuru are original and josei respectively, another good genre but not subject of this thread.

Yuri/Shoujo AI: 90% of the anime with that tag are male gaze. The shoujo shows which have lesbian relations usually are void of fan service. E.g. CSS, Maria-sama, Onii-sama e, Utena, ...

Watch mo' shoujo. Understanding shoujo tells the men from the boys, actually.

Where's that "neither" option? There are some aspects of shoujo I like and some I don't. Overall I'm just lukewarm about it and if I had to choose I'd say no. I haven't seen many shoujo shows.

A lot of the social situations in shoujo are over-sweet and idyllic to the point I feel like I'm either observing aliens rather than people or I'm the alien. It reminds me that the medium is artificial, and I like being immersed. At the same time, like inim said, there's an emphasis on the relational and emotional aspects of storytelling that I can enjoy. Standalone episodes of Natsume like Swallow at the Lake Bottom are very good because of it, and even though Wikipedia tells me xxxHolic is shonen I think it incorporates the relational and emotional side of shoujo in a way where it couldn't be as charming or impressionable without. Imagine how much worse the main relationship between Yuuko and Watanuki would be presented and developed in a purer shonen fashion.

I am two score and a bit years old and there are nice shoujo series I liked.... like... Chihayafuru. In fact I really like Chihayafuru but that's probably also because of the Japan-culture and sports elements. Fruits Basket isn't bad too.

Oh wait I realise MAL says Chihayafuru is josei. Well. Maybe I don't actually like shoujo that much after all, oops

Shoujo is way too broad for any anime fan, no matter how masculine, to write off. Remember that it's merely a demographic and not a genre - and sometimes, this demographic is set by simply "I got this magazine to accept it, and it's a shoujo magazine."

Refusing to watch shoujo excludes you from some pretty hard-hitting and absolutely not frilly action (Banana Fish), fantasy (Yona of the Dawn), and drama (NANA). And that's just the starter pack.

i don't think i ever realized how expertly handled that would be, until you said it. i haven't watched a lot of cardcaptor sakura, i know i had for some episodes in the past but i wasn't into it and the magical girl tarot aspect. still won't get to it anytime soon, however you did give me a slightly renewed interest in it with that statement.
