Initially it seemed to want to say something about how those we're made to view as monsters are in fact made to be monsters by their environment and humanity itself. Anti-bullying campaigns weren't nearly as much of a thing in the early 00s as they are today so it's nice they made a gorey anime featuring the more nasty elements of it. Especially since we're made to empathize with the victims and I think especially overseas that's really important. That said, a lot of the culprits/evildoers/villains do fall into the usual "evil goes all the way" tropes for most of the series, it's not until later that we see some more grey, which is much closer to real life. Moral of the story is, even if there's folks with more violent tendencies, ostracizing them is only going to make it so much worse. It does struggle combining the Slice of Life segments with the Horror Gore segments. At times the whiplash almost makes it seem amusing. It's especially obvious in the final episode where an emotional scene that's supposed to evoke feelings with the audience ends up coming across as slow and even a tiny bit funny because the pacing is all over the place. We all know what's going to happen, we can all see it coming, don't drag it any further and just let it happen so the audience can have their own thoughts with it. It did keep my attention practically the whole way through so that's why the score isn't lower than the above would imply. Anime link |

It was a fun battle shounen, which tone and characters feel a lot like Chainsaw Man (the manga). It was exactly how I imagined Chainsaw Man should have been adapted. The balance between action, conflict and comic relief is very well achieved. Best character: Nanami. Too bad I wasn't saved from THE spoiler... you know which one, every social media and news site was spreading it, That didn't made it any less fun, but I watched this feeling sad about "that" character, even before the actual event. |
