But Kill la Kill does have the ecchi tag on MAL...

How are you even defining 'technically not ecchi'? There is no technical guidelines or mathematical formula to figure out whether a show deserves the tag or not. It's all just personal preference, subjective judgments and taking initiative with the tagging (or not) that makes a show on MAL get that tag (or not). So what are you asking? The most fanservice from a show without the tag or just whatever we personally feel shouldn't have the tag?

In any case, the easy answer is to list a hentai because those never have the ecchi tag IIRC :>.
I probably regret this post by now.

well, I recently watched K and was v surprised it didn't have an ecchi tag. technically there wasn't that much fanservice but when it comes on it's so blatant - all the camera angles for panty shots, and also this woman's blouse getting slashed open through the middle in a fight for no reason where she's not hurt at all, it's just to show her boobs almost falling out lol (and that was quite a long scene too)

Kill la Kill doesn't sexualise as much. I mean her outfit is pretty skimpy and they make some sexual jokes about it the first few episodes but most of the 'revealing' scenes happen in a non-sexual context.

Fairy Tail is quite fanservice heavy but does have an ecchi tag (mostly). And hentai doesn't have an ecchi tack either.

Code Geass doesn't have the ecchi tag here on MAL and that show has a decent amount of fanservice.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia by a long shot, somehow, oddly, this anime doesn't have the ecchi tag neither on MAL nor any other anime database site, but is full of flaunting nudity and cheap ecchi like falling on top of each other and "accidentally" grabing boobs, etc.

That's one opinion, but the argumentation is vague and doesn't really address the issue of it being inherently subjective where you draw the line or what quantifiable criteria to use for deciding whether a show deserves the tag or not. Just the fact that you have to argue about it is kind of my point. There's plenty of people who will disagree with you (otherwise it wouldn't have the tag in the first place) and which side you agree with is just based on opinion and preference since there are no 'rules' about ecchi.

To some degree the same goes for any tag/genre but ecchi in particular has always struck me as the least consistent and meaningful tag in the DB, in many cases being applied (or not) more or less arbitrarily.

That's funny because as a whole the franchise felt way more geared toward female-targeted fanservice and I'd be surprised if the majority of the fanbase isn't female.

I go out of my way to avoid these shows, so I wouldn't rightfully know. I think Gantz might top my charts but that's also an ecchi show, apparently, so I don't know man. Code Geass?

Usually, just looking at a shows posters gives a clue as to whether it'll be the case especially if there's a woman/girl on the front. Their choice of outfit, or how it's depicted or worn usually gives a clear indicator of how they'll be portrayed.

there was female fanservice too, it's just that from the number of male:female characters in the show itself I'd expect it to be a show that's really targeted to females, but somehow there were random scenes that reminded me of an extremely watered down version of prison school so it felt kind of out of place. it's like they were trying so hard to please both genders...somehow.

Honestly GoblinSlayer had a lot of fan serivce.
The rape scene in the first scene had a lot of sexual camera angles and showed the clothes getting ripped off her body and her from the fromt ans she was raped.
Intense :(

But yeah, just the angles used felt very fan servicesy

Honestly, just choose some of the shounen shows, like the Big 3. Tons of good fanservice in Bleach, Naruto, or One piece.

Haiyore Nyaruko-san surprisingly doesn't have the ecchi tag even though arguably half of its comedy is overtly sexual.

One of the Gabriel Dropout specials has what is basically a tentacle scene, also using Gabriel Dropout's nudity and censoring joke.

Magic User's Club has probably the most fanservice I've ever seen from any of Junichi Sato's works, not just with anime in general.
It's an OVA too (not to mention Ikuko Itoh was the animation director for this), so the whole animation of it all is disturbingly... good lol
Idk I usually hate sexual fanservice, so this show's fanservice may seem too tame for most people...

I've not yet seen it yet, but from what I heard Top wo Nerae! is up there for fanservice. I mean, the term 'Gainax Bounce' originated from that series so we thank Gainax in general for incorporating it and other series adopting it in some form or fashion into their shows.

it even has its own entry on aniDB
https://anidb.net/tag/5835/animetb

Gurren Lagann would fit the bill nicely for Yoko alone.

Queen Blade

The orginal game it's based on is actually tamer than the later PSP games or the anime.

Ishuzoku Reviewers is definitely the most fansrvicey of all and like Queen's Blade the source is tamer than the anime.

This question is self-contradictory. Kill la Kill is considered ecchi by the majority of the community.

I’d summon Manaban for his take on what qualifies as ecchi since he’s one of the more reasonable AD regulars that doesn’t think of shows like Kill la Kill and Shokugeki no Souma as ecchi, but afaik he’s MIA at the moment. Maybe we could get @Deknijff‘s take?

I feel honoured to be summoned in these trouble times so thank you

If OP means just ecchi fanservice I feel the question is rather dumb since if the series has lots of it Id much rather say its ecchi focused series which is there to please the fans and drawing a line is always difficult since ecchi isnt a genre but simply a tag you add to a show you feel is more sexually focused than others within the norm be it the main point of the show or not

I would personally say Kill La Kill is a ecchi focused show as its basically Seikon no Qwaser but clothing instead of breast milk. The need for sexual content is important for its very premise along with several sexually focused camera shots and scene choices

If OP is more loose with his meaning of fanservice in meaning anything that pleases fans Id say the thread should be focused on spin offs personally like Carnival Phantasm or Isekai Quartet which whole purpose is to please several fans of different shows with things fans from existing franchises would highly enjoy

I can't take kill la kill seriously. They really want to create a serious plot, but it's impossible to even take it seriously when she looks like.... that

You'll get used to it man, with no time you'll come to ignore the lewdness of the costume for the plot and action. Initially I too was grossed out by some scenes, especially the scenes where Ryuko transforms and the Kamui sinks deep inside her vagina to draw blood or something. But over time, I didn't mind that and even thought it was cool. I'd suggest you give it one more try

So far, probably Grisaia and Harukana Receive. Both don't have the ecchi tag on MAL, but feature lots of fanservice. I mean I'm pretty sure Grisaia's VN is literally an eroge + the show has way more nude scenes than a lot of other ecchi's. In Harukana Receive, the girls are in bikinis like 90% of the time, and the camera angles are pretty nice too.

I think every ecchi I've watched has "fanservice" in it.

For non ecchi anime, I am thinking of "Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records"
