Whats up with people leaving their pc on while logged into a games especially mmo games and leaving the characters on a afk area? Why?

Its ok if you leave pc on cuz of some work or if your downloading something overnight but what of these people who dont do either of these and still leave the pc on? why u do dis mate?

Did nobody ever told you about saving power?

Guilty as charged. But granted I use a low power computer or keep it sleeping when idle.

Generally, if your com is older, and it starts to boot slower and slower, you find it easier to just let it stay on than to wait for it to start up. You can get right back after a day of sleep. Sometimes, you can wait for up to 5-15 mins for it to completely boot up and load everything in place.

But yea, I think it's more of a habit from gaming days and torrenting over the night that I just keep my computer on all the time.

People can leave their characters or games on for various reasons, such as getting a rest and then end up fall asleep. Or when some games have allows automation and you can get it to run by itself and the process ended either by abrupt disturbances or resources ended or it finishes. Other thing could be setting up shops in games or fishing.

Luckily, it's about the only few thing I leave on at night beside the lamp or the air conditioners or the fan. Let's not count the refrigerator.
Someone believe I hv Fantasy Prone Personality, in short, FPP.
So I decided to live up to it, Yay!

I mean in an MMO you leave your character idle to show off your gear, I've been guilty of it on a number of occasions.

Other than that I usually just shut my pc down or sleep it if I'm away from it for an extended period.

I can leave my school laptop in sleep mode admittedly but I'll always turn my desktop off before leaving the house or going to sleep. Because why wouldn't I? Just a waste of electricity otherwise

No, my friend keeps several computers on while I turn it off, have my PVR in low power mode, sure it rakes 30 seconds to start up but that doesn't bother me now as it takes me time to settle in anyway.

It makes no sense to leave things on overnight.

My computer is old so I don't really shut it down. It's convenient to let it sleep and start rather than shutting down and booting up.

What a nostalgic question.

Coming from someone who used to play mmo's and afk my character all the time with the computer on, there 4 things that comes in mind.

1. Back then, social media wasn't a thing. I've had guildmates, party mates, friends who I always had contact with.
I leave my character afk so I can receive their message.

2. I've had items in the auction, and most auctions had taxes in them, so the buyers mostly messages or adds the seller (me) to lower the prices without taxes.

3. Just afking and taking a break from gaming. Probably alt-tabbed out, watching porn or something.

4. Literally afk's on the hang-out place, because the place wouldn't be complete if you're not around (even if afk)

I used to but now life has haunted me to shut down my pc for several days at best.
Back then, some of my friends who is into mmo even paid for hours on internet caffe just so they can leave the pc on and got back to it after they sleep.

I shut my phone off before going to bed, too.

Only time I leave my laptop on when I'm away from it is if I am in the middle of watching an anime or playing a VN and need to go eat or something. As for leaving it on all night or such, only happened when I was doing random Windows updates or file compression that took forever. My previous laptop, a Gateway, I pretty much tried to leave it on as much as possible as the boot cycle was messed up and sometimes took upwards of an hour to boot correctly.

I tend to leave my laptop on but in sleep mode when I'm at home and need to take a break to eat something or do some quick errands like getting groceries, but I always log out everywhere beforehand. I never really got how people are online appearantly 24/7??

Shutting it down before turning in for the night, unless there are some downloads running that are expected to take an hour or longer to finish.

I turn on mine when I get up and shut it down when I'm about to sleep so it's running throughout the whole day/night. CBA to go through the booting process even tho it takes no more than 20-30 secs.

I turn it off at the power strip that it (and the modem, monitor and speakers) are plugged into. In other words-when I'm not using it there is no power to it.

I used to leave my computer on during the day while going to work so I could continue right away with reading Visual Novels instead of having to boot up and load the progress. But since I'm using my laptop for stuff like that, I only put it on hibernate. In summer or when I go away for a shorter time, I only just use the "power safe" button on my wireless keyboard, though I still use hibernate over night/for longer absences.

I used to turn my computer off completely by clicking the switch on the power stripe, but that caused issues with the PSU, so I stopped doing that. Also once when I left it unplugged for three weeks or so because of a vacation when I was younger, I had to change to CMOS battery... so the only thing I actually unplug is my laptop's charger. It bugs me more though that my TV has a ridiculous bright stand-by LED... but I don't want to unplug it or use the switch on the power stripe out of worry it could cause issues with the condensers

I never leave it on overnight. My PC nearly caught fire because of a 4pin Molex to SATA cable this year. It caused a short and burned my dvd drive enough to spew ashes all over my room. The top of my tower have a slight inverse distortion due to the heat. I was wondering what that incense smell when I came up to my room after I gone downstairs for 30mins.

So for me, I wouldn't risk leaving my pc on when I'm not home or sleeping. Got some pics if anyone want to see.

Wait, does your PSU not have surge protection?

Kaiser-chan said:

The boot time depends on many factors. Like there are quite some people that prefer to keep a boot logo and disable fast boot in the BIOS/UEFI just so they have more time to hit the respective keys for opening up the boot menu or the BIOS/UEFI without having to boot into the OS, first.

Then if you have multiple internal drives rather than just a single SSD, it takes longer to initialize the drives.

If you shut down your computer properly by disabling fast startup, of course it will take a bit longer as well. There are even issues with installing updates when you shut down your computer with "fast startup" enabled:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4011287/windows-updates-not-install-with-fast-startup

And last but not least: if you want to have all kinds of background programs starting with Windows, they will naturally increase the boot time as well.

no that reduces the computer's life expectancy.
