Do you wear your shoes when you're inside of your house, or do you take them off?

In animes and Japanese culture, you'll see people taking off their shoes before they enter the house. This is common in many places in Africa and Asia, along with Muslims households as well. In fact, I thought that everyone does this except those on TV since it's a set.

But I've recently learned that this isn't the case and I'm confused. Do you wear your shoes when you're inside of your house, or do you take them off? Also, what is your culture and is this the norm (keeping them on or off) where you're from?

Edit: Do you also take off your shoes when you're in a hotel room?

Yeah I do. Why wouldn't I? It keeps the place clean and I can stretch and massage my feet.

I think this is the norm.

Only when I'm half way out the door, and then suddenly remember I forgot my work keys, then I come back inside with my shoes on. Otherwise, I take them off.

I'm pretty sure "taking your shoes off" is not some remarkable thing of some cultures but "keeping them" on is one of American culture.

It's often phrased as some specifically Japanese thing I noticed amongst Americans but it happens everywhere because what man would want dirt in his home? It's not that I have some special lower ground to remove shoes but everyone visiting me is of course implicitly expected to take off their shoes and leave them in the hallway as I have no interest in their street dirt.

It is obvious that "obscenity" is not a term capable of exact legal definition; in the practice of the courts, it means "anything that shocks the magistrate".

Oh, I just saw the additional question...

If I'm in the hotel, I will take off my shoes and change to bathroom slippers. Many hotels, 4 stars and above, do provide disposable slippers for guests if they need to go to the pool. If there isn't any provided by the hotel, I will change to my own slippers.

I think it's more comfortable and convenient to wear slippers especially when it's cold. It is also for hygiene purposes as hotels' carpets are not exactly clean and we wouldn't know when they have been shampooed. Additionally, these rooms are for public use. So, it will be advisable not to walk bare footed.

I always thought it was common sense to do that lol. It's like you go outside all day and then you finally get to take them off at home. Plus in Canada we step on rain puddles/autumn leaves/snow etc.

Yes I take them off in a hotel room too

I never got the stereotype that we in the West supposedly wear shoes indoors. Like above post I live in Canada and if you did that you would track snow throughout the place which would just damage the flooring. Plus its more comfortable to be barefoot anyway.

I don't just walk around with shoes on all the time, but I definitely don't take them off at the door. I'll usually go to my room and take them off as that's where I keep all of my shoes. And I don't always go directly to my room or directly out the door, so I guess you could say I wear shoes in my home quite a bit.

I surely enter my house with shoes... There's no custom of leaving them outside the door. But when I get home, if I'm not too lazy or know I will go again soon enough, I tend to put them off, and switch them to house home (slippers is just for summer, I think, not sure how it's called when it's for winter)

I don't even wear socks inside of my home, let alone footwear. The only time I have shoes on in the house is to go down to the basement, as it's a messy unfinished storage area without proper flooring.

I have hard floors so I cannot walk around in socks, too cold in the winter and also too slippy. I hate old man slippers so I got some yoga shoes which are great, they have a rubber sole with a stretchy top so are like wearing socks with a sole.

Also great for racing games to get a good feel of the pedals.

I let other people wear shoes though.

I wear my shoes in my house... When I am visiting friends or at another person's house I will take them off or ask what the person prefers. I have friends who are absolutely disgusted knowing I wear my shoes in my house, but I don't really think much of it... and based on the polls I guess I'm the minority. :l

idk my mum would never let me step so much as a toe with shoes on in the house, so i've kind of grown up with that mentality.
i usually switch to slippers or "inside" slip-ons which are just really casual sports slides most of the time since they're comfy.

No, I don't. And I don't know anybody from my country who does that.
In my country we don't wear inside the shoes that we wear outside.
We have slippers that we wear inside and shoes that we wear outside.
I have for example a really comfy pair of slippers-like shoes that I wear ONLY inside and normal shoes that I wear ONLY outside.
Personally, I really don't get why some people wear inside the shoes they also wear outside. That's kinda dirty from my perspective.

EDIT. Sometimes I don't even wear the slippers when I'm inside, I only wear socks, or if it's too hot, I stay barefoot.

I would think people would naturally wear shocks or slipper in their own home for the sake of comfort. I don't take them off before going in though, so cleanliness isn't the main reason.
It doesn't seem like a normal thing to take off your shoes in someone else's home though. Unless your close to them, it seems like your getting too comfortable in another's home. Is this the result of a lack of "social cohesion" and maybe a sign of superficial civility. People willing to normalize dirtying their homes for such an idea.
This seems like the American perspective. I'm socially inept though so don't take my word for it.

I can see you
