▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Interview #185 - @GonzoLewd ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The Lewd Connoisseur

"Without lewds, life would be a mistake."

Interview conducted and reviewed by: @Skittles

Could you tell us more about yourself?

I’m a 25-year-old yank weeb from Kentucky working as a grocer. Previously, I was a university student studying Philosophy in Indiana. I figured the only reason I chose my major was that if I were to stay in an institution for more than four years, why study something you have no interest in? You might as well consider doing something you’re interested in and be disappointed that you are not succeeding much in life rather than doing something because it provides a better outlook for a job opportunity. In the end, it does not matter because the job market sucks anyway and you’ll regret not going with what you’re passionate about.

I was not the best student ever and graduated with a GPA of only around 2.8. I had a B- average mostly because I was not feeling the academic lifestyle that I had grand ambitions for with my major. Trying to succeed in academia felt like a miserable experience as you work towards grad school, and by that point, jobs for grad students in Philosophy was not in abundance. I’m still living with parents, but thankfully, I will be moving into my own apartment in a few months so I can freely enjoy my lewd ways in the privacy of my own place.

How did you choose your username?

It’s funny because Gonzo-lewd was not my original MAL name. Rather, it was DrGonzo2 or something along those lines. The name was supposed to be a reference to Hunter Thompson, one of my favorite authors at the time. Then it later changed to GonzoNyan because I thought "Nyan" would be a cute addition to the name. Eventually, it led to Gonzo-lewd when I started to awaken my lewd tendencies and internet persona. I guess you could say the "Gonzo" is now a reference to Gonzo Porn where the sex is close-up and personal. An example is where you can see the inside of a cutie’s asshole when they spread and gape it. Y’know, the best stuff.

Could you give us your brief history of your time on MAL?

I started using MAL in late 2011. I thought of it as a useful tool to keep track of what I have watched throughout my life because I’m terrible at keeping track through memory alone. It’s proven to be great at that and how you can customize your profile to create your own identity on the site. For almost a year, I did not really mingle with the community because I was still a gigantic recluse who had terrible social anxiety and trouble talking with people online. Once I was able to overcome these issues, I began to socialize more on the site. I invited myself to clubs so I can make friends. Some have led to great friendships that last to this day while others just kind of petered out for various reasons.

Because I was a lazy student who favored fun more than anything else, I decided to give reviewing anime a shot. I started my own blog called Gonzo’s Anime Love Shack because it was the cool thing to do at the time if you were a critic in any medium (not so much anymore, lol). I had a passion for this because being a writer was something I was interested in doing. Just like most writers who only started blogging, my early reviews were not the best in terms of quality and grammar. Thankfully I’ve gotten better as time went on, and I was able to develop a reputation for my reviews on MAL from 2013 to 2015. However, I eventually became less interested in writing them because life was getting in the way when I was graduating from university. Although I recently got my motivation back, the site’s new voting system has made it difficult for reviews to gain attention unless they are posted right after the show finished airing. Still, I’m now starting to get the urge to write more reviews as I’m getting back into the swing of watching anime again.

What led you to become a fan of anime and manga?

Well, just like any kid will tell you during the late '90s to early 2000s, it was watching anime during the Toonami block on Cartoon Network. I can’t remember exactly the first show I've ever watched, although one that popped into my head was Sailor Moon. However, I don’t think this was the point where I became a fan of anime because I had no idea what "anime" even was at the time. There was a point around 2004-2007 where I started to disown the medium because the most popular shows at the time were the big four shonen, most notably Naruto. It was considered “uncool” to like them around that time, and even now anime fans still experience the same backlash we continue to see to this day.

Around 2007, I started watching a little anime called School Days, which was unlike any other show I've previously seen. “An anime about high school kids? These actually exist?!” Yeah, I was that naive. I also started high school during this year, and since my parents were becoming more lax on restricting what I would search on the internet, I started to look up other anime that were similar to School Days. I was basically watching any anime with a harem twist to them because I was hopelessly looking for more cute girls to gander at. I guess you could say this was when I began to develop an attraction to 2D cuties, which was something I did not even think was possible at the time. In hindsight, a lot of those old '00s harem anime I've watched were probably hot garbage, but nevertheless, they were a gateway drug that introduced me to better anime rivalling even the greatest works of art. Especially the ecchi ones.

Any users you dislike/like and why?

Now as for people I like, there are too many to count. Still, I can name those that are closest to me at the moment and give them funny titles:

@Veronin - My MAL Bae

@Yorozuya-no-Yume - My Little Imouto

@Iconic - Fellow Yui Ogura Lover

@HaXXspetten - My Femboy Cutie

@kageroulover - My Brazilian Cutie

@Lightfellow - Fellow Rival

@Kaleb-kun - My Cute Stalker

@Antearion - My Homie

@Lythelus - My Aussie Cutie

@Lindle - My Gaben Newell

@Dashiawia - My Asian Cutie

@FirionHope - Fellow Hestia Lover

@Master10K - My Lewd Rival

@PantsuAndButts - Fellow Pantsu Lover

@Prog_upworks13 - My Indonesian Cutie

@ArcherEmiya24 - Fellow Anejiru Lover

@Ninety2Pac - My Michigan Buddy

@Ruka_Suta - Fellow Futa Lover.

Any hobbies outside of anime/manga and MAL?

Oh god, tons. Music is my second love. I would sometimes listen to music while I watch anime. I could not think of a life without it. I do not limit myself to genres, and I would listen to anything as long as it's good. If I had to pick my top favorite genres, though, it would be Ambient/Drone, Black Metal, Hip Hop, Electronic, and Punk. These five genres are what I listen to the most. In fact, the other site I’m active in is Rate Your Music where I have a profile to grade the albums I've listened to recently.

I like watching sports. Some teams I’m a fan of are Green Bay Packers (American Football), Chicago Cubs (Baseball), Real Madrid (Football), Red Wings (Hockey), and my state's teams (College Basketball).

Although I do not do it as often, I love reading books. Whether it’s philosophy, history, sci-fi, fantasy, or general fiction, I’m always eager to give anything a shot.

Video games are another love for me, and was in fact my primary hobby before anime and music took over. Although I don’t play nearly as much as I did back when I was a kid, I try to find the time to finish whatever games interest me.

Films are always a treat for me. I mostly watch movies of the past and only occasionally go out to the theater to watch certain titles that interest me.

What do you usually do in your free time?
from @Prog_upworks13

What free time? Haha. Outside of work, I try to unwind by playing a game because every time I try to watch an anime or movie, I'll always fall asleep from exhaustion.

So what were the big inspirations that drew you into enjoying the art of anime and the lifestyle around it?
from @MrGreenToS

I honestly never thought about what specific things made me enjoy those two aspects. Now that I think about it, it may have to do with how I was (and to a certain degree still am). I've always been indifferent towards whatever was popular as a kid or teen in my country. Whether it was mainstream music, TV shows, cartoons, or even video games, I started to grow tired of the tediousness of late '00s American pop culture. What specifically sparked my interest in anime was how different it was from any other medium at the time. It had stories that was unique to its own culture, so you hardly ever see them in western media. Of course, falling in love with 2D girls was the one thing that triggered my obsession for the medium.

As for the lifestyle, I didn't really get into it until I started having my own bank account, which I use to buy anime merchandise and earn weeb cred. To this day, I have yet to go to an anime convention, nor do I really have any desire to do so after hearing nothing but cringy things about them.

So what does @Gonzo-lewd see themselves doing in the next five years?
from @MrGreenToS

Dying sad and lonely with my waifu pillows next to me? Nah, for real. I see myself possibly getting an English teaching job in Japan or any other foreign country. Language is another interest of mine that I've wanted to teach ever since I started talking to people from overseas.

As a fellow pervert, who would win in a perv-off between @HaXXspetten, @Ardanaz, @Kagami, @IPreferEcchi, and yourself? Why?
from @Kagami

I'm not very familiar with some of them, so I can't really answer honestly. However, if it were between me, Haxx, and IPE, I would win for sure. Haxx is a puritan one-waifu only simpleton, and IPE is still in training with only around 100 titles completed under his belt :v

What anime girl does @Gonzo-lewd consider to be the most relatable?
from @kageroulover

Lain from Serial Experiments Lain is one that immediately comes to mind. I feel like she represents how I was at my middle and high school years: a social recluse who took refuge on the internet since it felt more of a real experience than the outside world. A world which is shallow and tedious to go through.

What language would you like to learn the most?
from @HaXXspetten

If I had to choose one, obviously Japanese. I'm still learning and grasping the Kanji writing system.

How would you objectively define a waifu?
from @HaXXspetten

I'd define a waifu as a cutie you develop an emotional connection with from their physical appearance and personality, and the feeling is so strong that you just want to marry them.

As a popular reviewer on MAL, what tips can you share with us for writing reviews?

  1. Always proofread your review. Nobody wants to read a review that seems like it was written by a fifth grader. Personally, I use programs that help me show mistakes and get rid of unnecessary words that make the review seem unprofessional.
  2. Never try to make a review sound like a college paper. It always has to come from the heart because it gives readers the impression that you are being honest. For example, there is nothing wrong in admitting that a show bored you to tears. You just have to explain why or how it made you feel that way so that the audience can understand your rationale behind it.
  3. Never start a review with a poetic quote that may not have anything to do with the show. It's a pretentious and lazy attempt to make the review appear professional.
  4. Don't divide each paragraph into labelled sections like 'Story,' 'Sound,' 'Characters,' etc. While it's useful for beginners as a template, it doesn't make for a sexy-looking review.
  5. Try to be witty. Granted, I don't always try to be funny because it's hard to wisecrack all the time, but it always helps to make the review more fun to read.

You have a pretty flashy profile. Did you design it yourself?

I did not make my profile. It was a gift from a MAL friend by the name of @raxius1230. Unfortunately, he doesn't go on MAL anymore since his life is too busy and his interest in anime has been waning.

Suppose you are able to bring five girls in your favorites list to life for your personal harem. Who would you choose?

Technically, all of them are part of my harem. But if I were to choose for a night in town, it would obviously be Hestia, Amy, Ikaros, Naoto Shirogane, and Momo Belia Deviluke.

Big oppai, delicious flat chest, or traps? Choose one!

Oh god, so tough. I would have to choose big oppai because it'd be nice to lay your head on them during bedtime while the cutie pets your head.

In your opinion, the most fappable hentai you have ever watched?

The one that I've fapped to the most is most likely Anejiru 2 The Animation. For some reason, I developed such a crazy obsession of it that I imported a DVD copy and the original eroge from DMM. I even wrote a review of it, which is so far the only hentai review I ever did.

Do you see yourself leaving MAL in the near future?

Nope. I still have a fondness for it despite all the baggage that comes with it.

Any feedback on the interview format?

I like it. Maybe I'll do another one in the future.

Is there something unasked you would like to talk about?

The only one that pops into mind is the question of viewing hentai as art. That's always been a subject I've been thinking about. I may do an editorial on my blog about it, so I guess I can say the short answer is most definitely, and people need to accept it.

Could you recommend us three users from which we can choose to interview in the future? And why?

@kageroulover because he's adorable and interesting :3

@Yorozuya-no-Yume because she used to be very active back then and might prove to have a cool interview. And she's a sweetie pie :3

@Lindle because he's such a derp.

This marks the end of the interview. Thank you for your participation!
