so, a bunch of girls in old-ass planes with analogue sights out-flew and out-fought a bunch of men who had been flying for years in better aircraft? is there no way writers can write a story that doesn't make the protagonists look good by making everyone else look like shit and be as incompetent and arrogant as possible?

Pretty much this.
I dont always mind shoujo, and I like some of the humor, setting and art the anime is in.
But the fact that every single guy we have seen up till now is either a drooling spineless moron (the captain) or an incapable, arrogant and horny idiot (whoever the guy was who got shot almost instantly).
Not only that, but after they died, they get trashed on by the 'moral comittee'.

After that I have seen enough, ill go back to my shounen where the MC might be a guy, but the women actually have character and arent all as useless and helpless as prince peach in Super Mario.
I do not mind female MC's, i do mind fucking feminism creeping into anime

I know in these setups you have to big up these pilots skills as character introduction, but damn why is it always the same fucking way?

Idiot: [Brags about activity] I done n of this particular measure, I am good.
Girl: I have done 10n of this
Idiot: [gasp]

Like I know these mercenaries are not the cream of the crop, but having them suck absolute dick is just to make the girls seem better is lazy. I feel like I've seen this exact thing happen in at least 10 other anime. Poor guys have their plane tapped by a bullet and they fall, but MC survives just fine I guess.

Also this would definitely work better if just the planes were CG, but whatever. Mixing CG and "normal" animation characters will always look odd.

Seems Houseki no Kuni is going to remain the only good looking CGI anime TV series for now.

Pretty cool tbh. My expectations were low, but they were certainly surpassed.

The very first shot on the cards as those guys played asshole/president or whatever else it's called was pretty cool. The dialogue was super fast paced in the beginning as well which gave for a high energy, snappy feel. I kinda liked it, but it could easily become a pain if it's always so fast.

The entire takeoff sequence focusing on Kirie was also done well. I think they are doing a good job of using some of the strengths of cgi to get dynamic shots that would be much harder with 2D. The cgi could have been better, but when a show is entirely cgi it usually doesn't negatively impact my viewing experience... Except that they randomly used some 2D bit here and there, which I don't really understand. If all the backgrounds and characters are 3D most of the time, why insert random parts when 2D characters. It just distracts me. Eh whatever.

The sound design felt good. I'm not expert on what fighter planes sound like, but I feel like they did a pretty good job.

And then the short monologue by Kirie at the end was pretty ambiguous. Hard to know if she's being literal about the world opening up.

Overall, I can say I've never watched any kind of air fight to that degree before, and it looked and sounded pretty cool, so I'm into it.

that takeoff sequence caters to a very specific audience of prop plane nerds that probably nutted in their pants at how right the pre-flight checks were. it serves no narrative purpose.

the sounds of the aircraft machine guns sound like this, at about 1:37: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HJMvADklEQ
that's not good.

if you want to see awesome dogfights, watch clips from Sky Crawlers on YouTube, and spare yourself the pain of watching the whole film. you won't be disappointed.

The character CG was rather unfortunate and the dogfight lacked a bit of clarity thanks to the confusing direction, but i have to give it sound design and research for the show!
All the aircraft was incredible detailed researched and the sound (apart from the voice stuff) was incredible during the fight. (Kind of made me pick up War Thunder again.)

Bit weird how detailed they did the character when she pulled back her glasses you could even see the marks of the edges, but on the other hand some of the girls didn't even pull down the glasses they had on their head during the fight.

Very mixed bag so far.

Sky Crawlers (and the princess and the pilot) have much more dynamic air combat.

With that said:

To my understanding, the teams behind Shirobako and Girls und Panzer are making this, which makes sense given the modeling and attention to detail with the aircraft. Essentially, this is to Japanese World War II aircraft what Haifuri was to ships and Girls Und Panzer was to tanks. And, like Girls Und Panzer, the show does have some rooting in plausibility:

The US Navy Akron class airship was designed as a rigid-hull reconnaissance airship, complete with a hangar for up to five biplane fighters for scouting and self-defense.

Plot and world-wise, however, this is Warthunder Air Aircade battles: the anime.

That looked like a dodo btw. I guess there are several reasons: Japanese love mascots, so it's logical a flying squad will have a bird. The name of the squad is longevity (kotobuki), so having an ancient bird like that makes sense too. Plus it looks goofy so it'll help for comic relief. Funnily enough the dodos were flightless though.

It definitely looked like a dodo! I was wondering about that. I'm generally not a mascot fan so, for me, meh. Waste of budget IMO but hardly a dealbreaker.

It was a dodo, but the Dodo was also flightless. Either way, the construction of this world is already pretty good; the rugged terrain has clearly made railroads impractical, and there's no water nearby, so massive cargo-airships (complete with their own hangars) are the obvious solution.

I still don't know why animate some characters in traditional 2D and the main ones in 3D, but the dialogue was so naturalistic and the air fight was so breath taking (those POV shots were kind of disorienting, but I think that was kind of the point, and it really shows how confusing an air fight can be) that any complaint I could've had with the animation was mostly gone by the end.

To answer your question about mixing 2D and 3D, it's because the big cost of 3D is creating new models and rigging them up. So it's great for making stuff like the aircraft battle scenes cheaper and more dynamic than what they might be able to do in the same amount of time with 2D, or for doing a bunch of main characters more efficiently, but as soon as you start having to rig up models for all the supporting cast and non-essential cast, it can get really expensive/difficult. It's why doing big crowds in CG can be quite the pain in the ass if you want to make people in it actually look unique. That's why most of the main people are CGI, but a lot of the supporting cast and jobbers are in 2D traditional, which is cheaper/more efficient to draw unique looking crowds and side characters in.

Blending the two methods is actually quite a clever trick and clearly an attempt to take advantage of the strength of both methods, and personally I think they've done quite well with it so far. There's a couple moments of stiff CG, but overall it's pretty dang good considering what we've had in the past. Especially when the 3D characters strike a pose or aren't moving much, it actually blends in with the 2D stuff pretty well. The people completely slamming the CG are high off their asses, especially when comparing it to Land of the Lustrous. LotL had a very unique situation of minimal character models needed, and most of them being quite similar looking outside of their hair (which needed to sparkle like gems and was a uniquely special trait that CG could make look really cool). I'm not sure we'll ever get anything that looks quite like it again, except a sequel.

Wow, aside from the annoying feminist BS this opening episode really surprised me. And like others have said this really gave me a Crimson Skies vibe, a game I haven't played in a long time and now I really want to after watching this.

The dogfight shattered my expectations to hell and back, from the pre-check flight list to the final landing. The attention to detail, the sound effects, and the cinematography were incredible! It honestly looked like something Steven Spielberg might have directed if he ever did an anime. My only problem is the CGI. Was it really necessary to animate the girls in 3D when almost everyone else was in 2D? Save the CG for the dogfights, don't waste it on the characters when it's not needed.

I'll be honest, I definitely like this a lot more than Girly Air Force. If that anime ends up leaving a bad taste in your mouth then I would definitely recommend this anime to fill in the void, especially if you're an aviation enthusiast.

It's okay. The 3D isn't great but it doesn't bother me too much, but its blandness pales in comparison to the characters and story. The character seem pretty generic right now and the story is rather...empty. The fight, while cool. dragged on a little too long and the pacing felt slow. I'm going to keep giving this a shot because it may have just struggled setting everything up and will improve in the future, but I'm not holding out hopes for anything spectacular.

So your male characters are idiotic misogynists who basically complain over doing their jobs while your females are fun-loving badasses who gets the job done? Gotta love the smell of feminism in the morning. Not.

Aside from that annoying crap, this is definitely something more intense than Girly Air Force since we're gonna be comparing the two quite often this season given the whole "air force" thing going on. I might stick with this one as the weekly grind and go back to watch GAF later. The animation reminds me of Bubuki/Buranki with the blend of 2D and 3D. Could be interesting, just hoping they tone down the bullshit feminist nonsense since we get enough of that on a regular basis in day to day life.

That was a very interesting first episode. They were very quick to get right into things, but I really enjoyed it. Not much was explained nor do we know much about the characters, but other than that it didn't effect my enjoyment of it that much since the main focus seemed to be the dogfights.

I loved the dogfight scenes they were very well done and just a lot of fun to watch. I enjoyed seeing Kirie get in the plane and check everything over and just hearing the sound of it starting up was really good. The sound effects are well done. I already like Kirie and i'm looking forward to seeing more of this anime and what the other episodes have in store.

I'm hoping a little more is explained at least about the characters and I wasn't sure what to think about this anime having two styles, but I actually thought the CGI parts were done well and I didn't find the two styles to be a bother at all. I understand some will be mixed on the whole mixing styles thing, but I thought they handled it pretty well so far.

All in all a very good start and i'm looking forward to seeing more especially the dogfights. This was a fun first episode.

I'm impressed someone has actually heard of the Akron. I also didn't know it was those people making this - I would've expected higher quality characters, and less overt violence (people died in the first episode, while neither Girls und Panzer or Haifuri had any real threat of death).

This is definitely a series that will not please everyone but it still has potential especially for those who are into world war 1 and 2 and aeroplanes. They paid very good attention to detail in the dogfights. Will keep watching, also the CGI while not the best is not the worst that has come out, just look Dimensional highschool and compare that to this so don't let animation keep you from seeing a potential good story.

I went into this completely blind, only knowing it was made by the Girls und Panzer director. I was shocked by the CGI, possibly because I haven't seen too many anime that rely heavily on CGI to render the main cast (I think the last one I saw was Inuyashiki). I got slowly used to it, and despite how well done the animations are, I can't avoid feeling uneasy when I see the CG characters. Something uncanny about them, or the combination of 2D and 3D.

The highlight was definetely the aerial battles. The setup to the fighter take-off made me feel like I was inside that cockpit, I felt my stomach tingling like in a summer flight. And the battle itself felt incredibly realistic. I look forward to more battles and less characters, much like in Girls und Panzer. At least I'll have a good time with that.

Hmm, I wonder how many people are going to compare this to Girly Air Force?

Ctrl+F "Girly Air Force" pg 1: 5 matches
Ctrl+F "Girly Air Force" pg 2: 4 matches
Ctrl+F "GAF": 2 matches on both pages

I guess I was expecting as much. As for comparing the two myself, I like how Kotobuki plunged us straight into the action after introducing the characters really nicely in just one scene. On the other hand, GAF seemed to be a lot more focused on introducing the protags and setting the stage for the rest of the story, and yet, it stumbled a bit in doing so.

Anyway, we're here to talk about Kotobuki.
I really enjoyed this opening episode, and provided we don't get a complete disaster by episode 3, I'll certainly be anticipating each new episode of this one every week.
The Dogfights had me excited, and some of the more trying maneuvers and situations (like our MC diving and almost crashing during that last fight at the end) had me gripping my chair, as if I was there in the cockpit with her. I'm invested, I had fun, and I'll definitely be coming back for more.

Both are worth a watch, but Kotobuki is superior in plot, characterization, and world-building. Moreover, that Girly Air-Force was animated in cooperation (and had a significant event collaboration with) the JASDF tells you really all you need to know about Girly Air-Force. In short, where Kotobuki is interested in telling a good story, GAF is essentially propaganda.

Nothing wrong with propaganda unless you just have a personal aversion to it. Just look at Gate. I would rather they colab and get the stuff right than trying to wing it and have it detract from the story.

What a 1st episode this is. Describing it as a full just won't do it.

First, the 2/3DCGI mix is actually decent and not off-putting. It's no Houseki no Kuni, but it pulls off nonetheless. Definitely has the Crimson Skies vibe with the stellar dogfights and the sound-work accompaniment that is VERY reminiscent. Thought Kirie looked a lot like Akanesasu Shoujo's Akane in terms of character design and VA, though there were differences as well.

Between this and Girly Air Force, this is the best of the 2 for the season.

Having a interest in WW2 fighter planes I was really looking forward for this show...But it's just too cringeworthy for me.

1) Planes don't fly like that...There a scene where the protagonist does this little flip thing and ends up behind the enemy. Well people might not understand this but by the time WW2 planes had advanced so much that they are actually much more heavy then they look and they are traveling at incredible speeds in excess of 200 mph. A plane simply can't slow down like that as objects in motion tend to stay in motion.

The dog fight looked like something more out of WW1 be even then it's stretching the truth

2) The girls just aren't cute at all, and it's due to that weird 2D/3D thing they have going on. Sorry but they look like a NPC from a web game in 2008.

3) The story is generic as heck...Fighter pilot mercenaries well that's kinda from "Area 88" though maybe a stretch, but I just feel like I seen this show before but done 100% better. There's nothing from the 1st episode that pulls me into watching the 2nd. In fact I was kinda upset the protagonist didn't get shot down by her nemesis like she should have, and killed off this dumpster fire of a show.

Honestly, much better than I expected. Sound design is on point, the fights are quite entertaining, and I like the aesthetic of the world in general, even if the 3d characters' animations outside of battle are really off putting for me. Let's see where this goes.

This was probably the most close anime to "Third Girls Aerial' Fighters" from Shirobako that I have ever seen.

Since dogfight between Aircrafts is not my favorite cup of tea, apart from the scene at the start where the girls emphatically and boldly refuse the guys that tried to hit on them I didn't thought much of it yet. But its not trash.

In the trailer they Advertise with "監督 水島努 「ガール&パンツァー」「SHIROBAKO」" Which reads "Tsutomu Mizushima, Director of (Girls und Panzer) (SHIROBAKO)"
So wouldn't surprise me if it is exactly that story.

What's the fucking point of having CGI main cast (+some side chara) when there is still so many hand drawn characters? Models are awful and stiff. Also side characters-pilots being drawn might be spoiler that they die because if they were CGI they could be reused.

My main problem with the first episode was that I couldn't tell the difference between the fighter plans on the battlefield so it was hard to properly appreciate it. Hopefully, I will like the second episode better.

I found this pretty interesting so far. I was not a fan of the CGI difference between the female characters and the rest of the people, but I am watching it for the planes.
First, I figured that the male group did not know too much when they talked down about the Hayabusa the heroines were flying, they were fearsome dog-fighting planes, and had superior maneuverability compared to the zero (which judging from weapon layout and style, was what the pirates and male group were flying).
The Hayabusa had special flaps which allowed multiple Immelmann turns, and hammerhead stalls both of which were used. They also had a superior climb rate.
I however did not like the fact that one was shot by a zero and did not burn up or break apart, they had no sealing tanks or pilot armor to speak of to keep weigh at a minimum. That is my only gripe.

DAYUM that sound design was orgasmic. This strangely felt more authentic than any aviation movie i've seen. While the actual maneuvering in the dogfights may have been somewhat unsophisticated in this first episode, it still felt very real... the shots and such had impact. My biggest gripe with combat scenes or weapons in any games is always the unrealistic hollywood-style sound bites they tend to use in place of the frightening and powerful sound of real guns and their impacts. Every shot is a jarring bang bang, and impacts crack in your ears... no pew pews and metal tinks. The biggest annoyance with bullets in 99% of media is completely inaccurate... Other aviation anime, like Sky Crawlers, or even Last Exile, sound more like videogames than real battles.

For reference, this is what they DON'T sound like.

↑WRONG↑ || ↓RIGHT↓

...this is what they DO sound like. (go to 3 minutes)

Point being, good realistic sound design is VERY important for immersion. For that i respect this anime.

They probably went for the girls being 3D to make them easier to animate in the cockpit without arbitrarily changing their character designs between clips.

...why was there a fucking dodo?? XD
...and flying no less.

I can agree with some pretty "Hollywood" gun sound effects, for example the girls planes are equipped with .50 cal which sound like this (jump to 0:54)

While the Zeros carry 20mm cannons which sound like this (jump to 1:08)

Not really a pew pew sound to me.

Pretty good first episode.
"Why give the viewers the same plot the've seen somewhere else, just give them awesome aerial battles!"

They use the Hayabusa...

hope they don't encounter a P-47 squad or they ded

Well the animation mixing was a bit weird. Still is. Perhaps they wanted the characters to move differently. I don't mind, and I don't think it lowers the quality of the episode any significant amount.

That DOGFIGHT THO. Honestly a rush. It's easy to tell what's happening with the good direction and flow. You get the feeling those who are experienced, are!

Really looking forward to more!
