Okay so I'm in college studying psychology to journalism and my professor told me about this class that studies fanfiction writing. I started to look into this more and there are classes in college you would question "how tf is this even a class?" anyways I started to think about the topic, an anime class. There is animation and whatnot but when I think of an "anime/manga" class there really isn't anything like that. I told myself I'm going to train in mangahologist but then I asked myself, would I even take my own class?

No.

Hell to the no. I would not even take Japanese Culture class, unless it is a Japanese language course. These things cost money. I could learn about this stuff on the internet for much less money, effort, and stress.

People don't even pay for the anime they watch now, you think they'd pay to take a class on it?

I would have taken the class yes. In my curriculum, we had to pick 1-2 non-major related electives. It was an odd requirement, and I couldn't get out of it. An anime or manga class would have been more interesting than what I ended up taking....

I'm minoring in Japanese, but still not sure I'd ever get to take the class as credit towards something. Not that I'd want to. Sounds embarrassingly pretentious.

The most I’ll offer is a camrip. The framing should be decent though. Audio will be hit or miss depending on whether whoever is speaking is trying to deepthroat the mic or not.

Yeah, and a lot of them won't help you in life one bit. The existence of some "wtf this is useless" classes doesn't mean there should be more of this being added, those existing that are a waste of tax dollars should be axed.

Me? No, anime is something I do in my free time. I don't need it to become an obligation, especially not if this means I've got to watch all the mecha and the old mainstream action anime (most of which I don't appreciate and find incredible boring) just to "appreciate the origin and history of anime" or some bullshit.

I've also got a feeling that the professors running the class would be unbearable elitists, so the class will be a session of shoving their shitty opinions down my throat rather than open dialogue.
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Well, my artistic talent is akin to a pile of trash regurgitated out of a sickly man. So I would have to say no on a personal level. Also with the way a lot of colleges are these day, I doubt it would happen.

Since college forces you to take a bunch of nonsense courses, I always picked the easiest ones as well that fulfilled their BS requirements and gave me a free A.

All these people saying they wouldn't pay for it must have never went to college as maybe 2-3 courses a semester have something to deal with your major, which is also likely bs as well as you need grad school for most decent professions anyways. Welcome to the greatest scam ever.

Considering my degree plan that had three electives. Definitely. Yeah, there could be some filthy weebs in there, but even in worst case scenario, you'd have some pretty funny stories to tell in hindsight. Don't really understand why everyone is so afraid of looking weird or doing something stupid. College is one of the last chances you get to do really stupid shit, might as well live it up.

Besides, it would be a much more useful elective than 'Art Appreciation'

Not sure if it's true or not but I did read an article about "otaku class" in some Japanese university.

And no, I'd rather not take that class, not interested in being forced to watch/read something that I have no interest in or trying to come up with some deep reasoning behind the fetishes of some weird fans. Not to mention that it would be completely useless for getting a job.

Classes make everything too objective, and if any person on the MAL forums is in an A&M class, they’d cause controversy and opinion clashes. And I don’t want to make my fun hobby something that I have to do assignments and research on as an obligation.

I mean if you're studying like international media or animation or japanese culture specifically I could see such a class having a place in the curriculum but in what other context will you justify a class being solely about anime?

You can just use anime in classes about different topics. Like we had this philosophy seminar about technology and media and the prof used GITS (the movie) as one of the examples/starting points to spark discussion.

I find it sad how many people in this thread try to be cool by saying they cringe at the idea of anything academic being anime related. Do you really think that little of anime? Any artform has a place in academia, any cultural medium of expression. I wish there was a little bit less self-deprecation in the fandom. When even the fans of anime and manga look down on it to such an degree that the mere idea of having it being a topic in any serious context makes them laugh out loud, how can we ever expect the general public not to look down on it and think it's all cringy tentacle porn for kids. Have a bit more respect ffs.

Once again my hypothesis that anime fans think worse of anime than non-anime fans seems to prove itself to be true :/.

most people here would just pirate the class if they could. lol.
and there are classes in animation and drawing.

as for me, not really. i'm not an artist nor do i plan on becoming one. serious people who want to become a mangaka can travel to Japan, sign up for classes provided by professionals in the industry, and have their work published in the magazine at the end of the coursework.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

I'm not sure I would.

That's because anime, to me, is something I go to to avoid work. It's something I turn to to indulge my imagination, to allow me to go on my choice of ride.

If I did take a class I'd definitely want to find a way to specialize in my favorite series, whatever that might mean. I wouldn't necessarily enjoy being forced to watch stuff just because it's "important" or whatever.

I mean, I might not hate it, especially if all I have to do is to watch anime and then describe my reactions to it. But it wouldn't necessarily be a good use of my time.

+1 what Pullman said.

I'm taking an Asian film and animation class for the last of my lib eds. I was hoping it would have at least one anime that we watched (assuming it would be something like Akira), but it ended up being entirely live action films. the class is still fun though and their are several anime fans in the class that I might not have met otherwise. Its also an experiance as ive taken a couple lit analysis courses but never a film analysis course so there are different things to look for that I did not know about.

also for people talking about the cost. at least most schools in my area only charge you for the first 13 (or so) credits. Since an average Engineer student semester is about 15+ credits anyways taking a class on anime doesn't really cost me anything.

As someone with low self-esteem, I find self-deprecating fans to be super cringy as they come across as attention seekers. I’d hate to use this word, but they’re pretty edgy in my eyes.

Wow! GITS on philo class! I had a similar case too in my philosophy classes back then. Our cool prof required us to watch trigun and death note and she made a philosophy quiz out of it. Everybody in the class loved it despite being a requirement. Surprisingly, most of classmates understand it more deeply than I do.

To be honest though way before that I've never thought anime could be applicable academically. That philo class do change my mindset on this. I wish people would try to see anime in a more positive light aside being a hobby/past time.
