Hello,

This is more of an open-ended question, but if an Anime were to be set in a certain historical setting or time period, where would it be? What historical events would you like it to focus on? Something from the 20th century, like the Cold War? Or would you prefer an Anime set in something such as Ancient Rome or the Medieval Ages?

I would like to see an Anime that either takes place in 19th century Imperial Russia or the Soviet-Afghan War that took place during the Cold War.

I wouldn't mind at all more animes situated in the Ancient History (Rome, Greece, Babylon, Egypt...) or the Medieval Era.

And I would love an actual World War II anime with good production values without witches, lolis or magic in general, and that they would have balls to represent Hitler and the nazis instead of NotGermany!, NotHitler! and NotNazis! like they did in Izetta.

Theres a manga called Vinland Saga and its apparently pretty good, im surprised you havent read it yet.

OT: Probably something like the Inkas/Aztec Empire or really any ancient mediterranean area culture.

Pls no more medieval or Nazis, Japan is also obviously overused.

i would like to see a ww2 anime centered mostly around weapons but with out the "school girl concept" just plan ol guys who got sent to war at the the age qualification and how they make it out of the battlefiled the protagianst would be a german pilot or tankman since they recived most of Resistance so it wont be boring remove as much hitler away from the plot and the storyline will progress to the end of the war up to opreation valkire

WWII from the German perspective like Unsere Mütter unsere Väter for example.

But really I'd watch any historical anime if it told the story honestly and didn't put in magic or some other bullshit like that. Anything set in Europe between ancient Greece and 1950 would be amazing.

Well, there's 3 that immediately pop to mind:

The one I'd want most is a dramatization of The Great Northern War with King Karl XII of Sweden as the central character. That's such an underrated bit of history and I think it needs more attention in general; it's really one of those things that feels like it's straight out of a work of fiction or a storybook, yet it happened in real life as opposed to anything else. It'd be an incredible thing to adapt. A good adaptation of it would be incredibly tense and overpowering, incredibly tactical and cunning, and a display of sheer willpower and overcoming incredibly unfavorable odds, with an ending that'd be somewhat tragic, showing that this incredible commander and ruler who could march through countless obstacles and remain standing, despite constantly staring death, absolute failure, and ridiculous amounts of adversity right in the face, can still fall eventually.

It's said that Carolus Rex was a leader who did not tell his men to go forth and fight; but instead told them to come along with him. He had Peter the Great of Russia begging for peace at one point. He fell in the end, but Karl the XII's story is an incredible one that would be great for this sort of thing. I'm biased, though, he's my favorite historical figure xD

Secondly would be something like Das Boot, where it's WWII from the perception of a group of German soldiers; doesn't have to be in an u-boat, but something with that premise would be pretty neat.

Lastly, which would feel like the most probable, a Sengoku period piece centered around Mori Motonari - what would differentiate it from other anime with that setting that's centered around prominent daiymo of the time is that Mori Motonari was just a deceptive, devious bastard who came up with the most intricate and detailed strategies of the time period. It'd be like Log Horizon except instead of in an MMO, it'd be set in the Sengoku era.

Oh! The Thirty Years' War would also be awesome too, but that literally just popped into my head so I don't know how they'd do that since I haven't thought of it.

Also a harem/ecchi where famous commanders from the world over like Hannibal, Gustavus Adolphus, Admiral Yi, Sanada Yukimura, Heinz Guderian, Napoleon, Genghis Khan and so forth are turned into a group of lovely ladies to serve as the haremettes. That's of the utmost importance.

I think, that you mean Jomon period. And that's quite broad, considering that it spanned over 10000 years. But I agree, an anime about the Ainu would be interesting.

An anime about WW I, the Cold War or the history of the Americas would be interesting.

It would be nice to see something with nice art about 17-18 century setting anime involving sea travel, whether something historical like sailing for discovery of new lands, just random stories with the setting

or about pirates even (are they afraid to touch the theme because One Piece exists or what)

or some accurate adaptations of classical adventure sea books that have that (Gankutsuou with spaceships doesn't count here)

You might like Takarajima. It satisfied my craving for pirates in anime, at least for a while. Done by the best director too so you can't really go wrong with it :>.

As for accurate adaptions of classical adventure sea books there is this, based on Moby Dick
https://myanimelist.net/anime/1466/Hakugei_Densetsu

But I'd definitely be up for more sea travel exploration in anime. I generally enjoy it every time a show has some episodes where the characters travel by ship, but I can't really think of any anime where that is what they do for most of the show. Until we get something like this I'll have to just read and re-reach Jack London novels for that purpose.
I probably regret this post by now.

High-middle ages/rennaiscance Europe.

Don't care what it is about but I want it to be 100% historically accurate, with actual clothes, armour, building everything from that time and place without any bullshit misconceptions and myths. Oh and it would be action.

Maybe 100% is too much since we ourselves don't know everything but I just want it to not be a fantasy series without magic.

I would really like something that is set in ancient sumer.
There isn't much known about them, but the few stories that they have,
i think would make an anime that i would enjoy very much.
Especially the Epic of Gilgamesh is something that i really want
an anime adaptation of.

An anime set in Persia would be pretty nice as well.
Something along the lines of the movie 300 or Prince of Persia,
portraying the culture of the persian people and having heroes
of persian tales as main characters and so on.

And pirates. I like pirates. I like Pirates of the Caribbean.
