Producers of Girls und Panzer der Film announced on Monday that box office earnings for the movie, which opened in theaters in Japan last November, has crossed the 2 billion yen milestone. The movie leaped to ninth place in this week's box office charts after placing 28th last week.

Girls und Panzer der Film has been screening for 27 weeks and has sold 1,207,473 admission tickets as of May 22 for a total gross earnings of ¥2,021,490,984. It is currently the third highest-grossing movie based on a late night anime series and trails the earnings of Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Movie 3: Hangyaku no Monogatari by approximately 60 million yen.

The sequel of the 2012 Girls und Panzer series will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 27. In order to commemorate the release, LINE LIVE will stream a special program featuring the movie's production staff on May 26 at 8:00 p.m. Japan time.

Good lord, movies can stay in theaters for 30 weeks in Japan if they're popular? :O

Wonder if they'll bring it to america.

Mizushima, Tsutomu must be good at directing. Any way they must be happy that they've earned estimated $20000000 for almost 7 months of their movie.

I must add that the ridiculuously long tail was caused by the screening of 4DX some time after the normal screenings started, which made the film to basically possesed two release windows.

I also really want to try it, but too bad it's in Japan.

Here is the list for late-night Anime Movies, and the comparison graph of Box Office gross vs days at the Box Office for the Top 4 in the spoiler tag.

Some numbers...
¥1,912,179,484 as of April 24 (156 days)
¥2,021,490,984 as of May 22 (184 days)

¥*,*80,361,200 over May 21~22 (day 183 and day 184: http://www.cinematoday.jp/page/N0082947)

¥1,941,129,784 as of May 20 (182 days, ¥2,021,490,984 - ¥*,*80,361,200)

¥*,*28,950,300 from April 25 to May 20 (day 157 to day 182, ¥1,941,129,784 - ¥1,912,179,484)

The boost from the film strip on Saturday and the increased 4DX screenings over weekend #27 was indeed massive considering how little it grossed over the 4 weeks prior to this weekend. GaruPan Movie still has to be at the Box Office for 19 days to surpass the 202 days at the Box Office Love Live had, and this is with the 4DX screenings starting from end of February for GaruPan Movie. Just makes me wonder how much Love Live would've grossed if it had 4DX screenings too...

I'm a big fan of both Love Live and GaruPan, so i'm very happy to see both having done so well, and have lasted so long at the Box Office, which is quite rare for even mainstream movies in Japan. Here's hoping another favourite of mine (KanColle) does similarly as well at the Box Office!

Madoka 3 is likely to fall to GaruPan Movie by this coming weekend if the partial attendees data vs actual attendees data are in similar ratios for week 28 (May 23~27) and weekend 27 (May 21~22).

41,000 / 27,942 = 1.467
¥80,361,200 / 41,000 = ¥1,960

Partial data attendees / Actual attendees / Gross / Total Gross
27,942 41,000 ¥80,361,200 ¥2,021,490,984 → Weekend 27 (May 21~22)
*4,332 *6,346 ¥12,438,160 ¥2,033,929,144 → May 23 (Prediction)
*3,118 *4,574 ¥*8,965,040 ¥2,042,894,184 → May 24 (Prediction)
*3,558 *5,220 ¥10,231,200 ¥2,053,125,384 → May 25 (Prediction)
*2,944 *4,319 ¥*8,465,240 ¥2,061,590,624 → May 26 (Prediction)
*4,000 *5,868 ¥11,501,280 ¥2,073,091,904 → May 27 (Prediction)
**,*** **,*** ¥**,***,*** ¥2,***,***,*** → Weekend 28 (May 28~29)

The studio making this does not see even a penny of this money. All of it is going to production committee.

The studio actually lost money in progress of making this.
