Anime shorts ranging from 3-10 min tend to be quite bad. But maybe you have seen some that arent just a waste of time. Want to hear your thoughts :D

Update: Inferno Cop is fucking amazing! Thank you Comic_Sans for the suggestion.

They're rarely ever something great, but there are a few out there are pretty good.
Looks like there's some good ones airing this season actually.

Shorts are usually better than full length shows. 3 minutes of bad stuff, vs 620 minutes of bad stuff.

Also, there are some legit good ones.

There's some that are pretty nice. Dana ga Nani was nice, it aired recently and had 2 seasons. Although admittedly, some of the pretty bad stuff are shorts as well.
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

Dunno about bad, but you can only do so-so much in such a short time span, so most of them end up very uneventful and average

Nah. I've been watching Nihon Animator Mihonichi for a little while and there's actually a few really interesting and good shorts in it. It's also nice to see such a variety. Shorts in general are where you're going to find the more creative/experimental stuff, though I can understand why that's not for everybody.

No, there are plenty of good shorts.

The problem is people who rate shorts on the same scale as full-length series (AKA. doing it wrong)

It's an expectation management thing.

Hoshizora Kiseki

REC

And if we're talking OVAs then there's a crap ton of awesome ones.

You're wrong. You probably have barely seen any or you're one of those people who hates experimental animation but keeps watching 100 independent shorts to rate all of them 1/10. Not every short is for everyone, but there's tons of really cool stuff out there.

It was a figure of speech, don't get hung up on the exact numbers...
Watching tons of experimentaa shorts and never giving a rating better than 2 or 3 is something I've seen pretty regularly.

eh.. i dont know much experimental shorts but there aren't many ways to rate stuff like The Embryo Develops into a Fetus .. i can totally see that happen on rating system that's biased against short anime and those with no story

There are also plenty of fantastic shorts that often do not get much attention such as the Diary of Tortov Roddle. That one is an excellent surreal anime that has a rather interesting art style which is enhanced by its completely voiceless presentation.

Speaking of silent shorts, Tsumiki no Ie is another short that is fantastically well made. I would highly recommend that one as well.

I personally love experimental shorts, but most of them are garbage. Since they are so short it doesn't take too much time to find the hidden gems.

Sure, and my average rating for Tanaami Keiichi is probably in the 2-3 range as well since that particular director didn't hit home with me, but if I didn't still have tons of shorts I rated 5+ I wouldn't keep watching those experimental ones. I find it weird to see those lists that are normal with an average of ~6 for their TV shows but every single anime rated 3 or lower is a short, and basically none of them have a higher rating. It's like normal anime have a 4-10 rating scale and shorts a 1-4 scale at best. Idk, sometimes it seems to me that people watch those shorts just to lower their average ratings

Yeah but being able to differentiate whether it's a 4 or a 1 if you don't like it and not just giving a 1 to every short that doesn't resonate with you is what makes the difference to me. I mean the arrogance of lots of the self-proclaimed critics on MAL that just make fun of every experimental short no matter how renowned and respected the creator is without even trying to get something out of it is what sometimes triggers me. Just because something doesn't hit home with you doesn't make it a garbage 1/10 imo. Especially with experimental shorts you need to be willing to enter the creator's world and try to understand what he was trying to do and not just judge everything at face value like I so often see people do.
I think the only shorts I've ever given 1/10 are ones that actively put me through physcial pain while watching them, with a combination of painful sound and seizure-inducing visuals.

If it has an original source material, then of course it will be bad. Their condensing a lot of story into a short time period.

I used to do that, but I realised that most of my rating system was dedicated to shitty anime. Even with my lower rating system I gave Tsumiki no Ie a 9 and Rusty Nail a 7 because although they are short they are still good anime. The highest rating I've ever given an ONA is a 6.

Wakaba*Girl is a one volume manga that was adapted into a 13 episode anime with 8 minute episodes. The anime was as long as it needed to be.

I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying, Fumiko no Kokuhaku, Rain Town, Pupipo!, Tonari no Seki-kun are pretty good. Tsumiki no Ie and Rec aren't half bad either. (Tsumiki's one 12min ep, and Rec's episodes are 15min)

Shorts in general tend to be beautiful, no matter their region of origin or the technique used to create them.
The creators have to be able to tell a compelling story in a very limited amount of time.

More often than not, the ones which don't use words are entertaining.
