Ushio using reverse psychology was nicely done.

And it looks like Tora can breathe fire as well.

Dammit I was looking forward to this fight yet was just left with disappointment.

Just another one of those times in anime where the fight seems like it's going to be better than it actually turns out to be.....

At the moment this show isnt really getting any better, im a bit tired of these episodic yokai, they need to focus on the main plot, with the actual relevant characters to the story.

Kind of slow compared to last time but at least now I know that Tora can breathe fire and the last words of that Youkai were just as creepy as he was.

All throughout the episode though I kept trying to find a logical explanation to why they werent sucked out of the cockpit, especially after all the windows were shattered? It was kind of funny how normal the situation felt like.

Reminded me of that one Twilight Zone episode, except a million times worse, considering how big this monster was!

Haha, Tora's reaction to flying on a plane was great. xD
The fight itself was just alright, but I mostly just like this new character, Hiyama. She seems cool.

That Sky demon was creepy as hell though.

It is incredible how entertaining this series is considering how cliche and ridiculous it can be.

Tora is the best.

I really liked this monster (and his butt), but I hoped for a more awesome fight, indeed :(

Really good episode. Its actually pretty rare for a Shonen battle to take place in an airplane.

The humor with Tora getting all giddy over the airplane worked, and the serious tone didnt feel out of place.

Ushio isn't doing a great job of keeping Tora secret...

Sad that they're skipping some chapters, but those introduced a character I hated anyway...

Episode viable as narrative, but are unhappy with the fact that he saw again a self-contained episode and have noticed too many coincidences in the story; a walk, but two are already too many. I hope that there is more intrigue in the plot near future, in addition to the humor left by Tora.

The quality drops again due to the compression. This is similar to episode 6 where that just go through the main points as check lists but misses all the flavors. Watching Yuu’s realization about the truth was a decidedly ‘meh’. Fight scenes are completely mediocre and the pacing lack intensity.

i dont know how i feel about this show at the moment, it has a season 2 coming and this season is 26 episodes long, the characters are very like-able, i feel like the main characters ushio and tora are beginning to develop but the other "main" characters Asako and Mayuko barely appear in most of these episodes, i actually really like the relationship between Asako and Ushio but we don't see that too often and Mayuko is alright but has to appear more,i think she is poorest main character of them all, and in episode 8 like wtf just happened he meets a girl, knows nothing about her, starts holding her hand? like what? Are we suppose to feel bad for her bc of her fathers death like im so confused? I love the fighting scenes and the comedy in this show and again most main and supporting (even episode 8 Yū was very like-able) characters are like-able but where I feel like this show really has some flaws is in the writing and pacing, it is also lacking in some story elements too . I don't want to sound like a hater, we still have a lot to go through so we will wait and see.

In a shounen, love interests - even when they are “main” - are minor characters.

Yuu will also play a role going forward. This is not a filler.

The pacing issue would be much better if they were doing a full adaptation. Compression creates many issues.

We are in the main plot - Ushio is on his way to discover things about his mom.

Instead of thinking monsters of the week, think these are shounen villains, whose arc happens to be compressed down to a single episode because they want to do 300+ chapters in 39 episodes.

I loved this bit in the manga and I loved it here, shame about the downplayed gore but at least they trimmed the fight skillfully. I remember Tora's plane-stopping scene being unnecessarily long in the manga, also the fighter jet dudes took forever to get there. It was paced much better now.

Paul said:
So that flying a plane with the front windows shattered like that is illogically impossible right?

Correct, as far as I know.

Not really. The sucking out of the plane we see is the effect from the cabin being compressed. If it gets decompressed then it won't be sucking you out of the plane.
The problem will be breathing though. But if we assume that the it got decompressed before the other guy open the cockpit and that the plane lost a lot lot of attitude then it can be kind of believable since at lower attitude there will be a chance to breathe.

That was rather.. corny.
"Let's hold this spear together,
aiming to take down the monster,
who killed your father."
Really?

The Ushio x Tora combi was swee tho, can't lie. The story for this episode was a little bit weak, that's all. Also require some suspension of belief in regards to the law of physic.

Great episode! I get why this monster of the week was in the OP now. The story with the girl and her dead Dad was alright, not mind blowing certainly but serviceable. I just really liked the youkai. The set-up of needing fire to kill him was clever and as soon as Tora said it was excited for the showdown. He had a unique personality too. Most of the monsters are destructive single minded maniacs but he remembered and interacted with Tora. And I love that he was so cocky until the tide of battle started to turn on him. One of if not my favorite episodes so far. As expected this series is really hitting it's stride now.

I'm sure that they exist but I haven't seen many stories in anime like this involving airplanes. It's a unique gimmick more should, Ushio deciding to fight the beast on top of the plane was particularly thrilling. We knew he was going to make it but it was still fun. I will say though, I thought about the final problem that to blow up the monster it would have to be separated from the plane. How dumb was that pilot that this never occurred to him?

So Tora and Ushio are just friends now. I was amused by Ushio goading him into replacing the damaged landing gear on the plane. They're off and running on their journey, and their first episode abroad is a really great one. I'm curious how long they're going to be traveling. And if we'll check back in with Asako at any point. I'm really hooked on this series now.

This episode was just okay.

After the last one, it kinda let me down. It wasn't bad or anything, but kinda off. I almost wish there was a mention that the youkai attacked the plane (after having apparently not done much in a month) because the Beast Spear, which attracts monsters, is onboard.

And that for the rest of the series, Ushio and Tora have to walk, because... THIS... is what happens when they take the spear on large commercial travel.

The one that did bother me most though, however was... so Tora could always spit fire? I thought he was a lightning beast. There were times in past episodes, he should've added that as well, but didn't.

thebrentinator24 said:

Also, since the front window of the airplane was broken, shouldn't it have sucked them out of the plane? Wait, this is anime, physics and logic don't apply lol.

Yeah, and this. I guess they were flying low?

Edit: After reading the manga chapter, and doing a lot of editing to the mediocre subs, I actually kinda like this episode more.
Amazing how bad subtitles can almost ruin even a solid episode. Stuff that made no sense made clear when I looked at the manga, and it became clear to me they were mistranslated.

Tora's whole huge lightning strike, crying out, "I DID IT, USHIO" made no sense, as 1. He didn't hit the youkai, and two, it's already been established, he's immune to thunder anyway.

He's signaling Ushio to attack, not attacking himself.

Other lines like this, like people complaining both the girl and the guy AND Ushio were all on the same plan. The manga makes it very clear that he's her escort to her grandmother in hokkaido, so, they are traveling together.

Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

Fight. Like. Hell. For everything and everyone you love. Always.

I can't be the only to notice it right? There is a glaring inconsistency in this anime with the Beast Spear. When Ushio calls it, the spear breaks the plane floor. However, he is able to stay through the plane ceiling. Also the spear was impaled to a rock. Makes no sense how the nature of the spear keeps varying.

Dat youkai on the plane.
Smooth Ushio holding her hand.
Ain't no damn way he saw the inside of the cockpit at that speed.

Considering Fusuma appeared in the OP I thought he'd be a challenge. lol

So I guess we finally saw the green blob monster that was in the opening.

Also how aware are people of all the yokais ?
Because between that one that has been crashing passengers planes, Tora being caught on video (with the entire school building exploding) and the sea serpent eating ships, I think the army should at this point at least know something about them.
