I believe someone already pointed this out now that we're three episodes in, but the ED reminds me a lot of NHK ni Youkoso's first (and only?) OP. Still good tho.

I can't get enough of Shiina. Her sleepy eyes were the best!

Poor girl who lives downstairs. I hope that she gets invited to Ryou's place for dinner at some point in the series.

''Food in manga (and anime) and dramas always looks better than reality'' ... cause of much grief xD

The food animation was amazing but it looks like the character drawings dipped in quality. Or maybe that's just me.

Seems like neither eating beforehand or during is helping. It still makes me hungry but sadly, nothing in the immediate vicinity is satisfying.

I want bamboo shoot rice and omurice too~

Japanese.

Seriously, they are the biggest foodies on the planet, which is why Tokyo has more Michelin Stars than most of Europe (I think there is a block in Tokyo that has more stars than the entire US).

And justified. I never thought of myself as a foodie, but nearly every restaurant I have ever eaten in when I visit Japan has been good, even hole in the walls near train stations.

And thanks to this show I get to have omurice tonight!

As for the commercial, no its just like a usual Japanese show. Food shows are one of the three main staples of Japanese networks. That is how serious they take their food.

I noticed the art in this episode was rather inconsistent at times, let's hope this won't become a recurring issue.

The food still looks godly though, and the head tilts! They were pretty subtle this time around.

Kirin was really adorable, i'm used to her high pitched voice already, so when she screams it's actually kinda sweet and hearthwarming :3

Another foodtastic episode. Man...i'm hungry, and this anime makes real food look like shit, feels like some hardcore torture.

You eyes are not deceiving you. It was quite inconsistent. I am sorry to tell you
that I am certain that it will be a recurring issue.

What viewers have to realize is that ① this is "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things",
② with a very few historical exceptions, CGDCT are never very popular and
③ any director who wants to be successful by making a CGDCT series has to
be a genius at making something that will attract at least a small viewership
while keep the budget minimal.

To get a feel for the challenge of CGDCT, have a look at the "Amazon Stalker
points" for this series as of this moment:

V1 2015/04/24 BD 1523 DVD 345 BDSE -- DVDSE --
V2 2015/05/27 BD 1469 DVD 362 BDSE -- DVDSE --
V3 ... sorry, I got lazy ...
V4 ... sorry, I got lazy ...
V5 ... sorry, I got lazy ...
V6 ... sorry, I got lazy ...

Sorry, I only filled in the numbers for Volume 1 and Volume 2. The next column
is the release date. After that, there are the points for the Blu-ray, the DVD and
then the two special limited editions. At this point, the numbers for the special
limited editions are still too small to make a reliable forecast, but be assured that
they will be small.

From many CGDCT series for which I have checked the Amazon Stalker points,
these numbers are typical and in fact respectable. On the other hand, they are
really low compared to popular series. "Free!" and "Sword Art Online" were in
the range of about 10000 to 20000 points.

Given these severe limitations, my own opinion is that the two directors,
Akiyuki Shinbou (総監督:新房昭之) and Naoyuki Tatsuwa (監督:龍輪直征) are
doing an excellent job. Their task is not to create fantastic anime. Rather, they
have to take straw and do their best to spin it into gold.

The quality of the animation and the art for Episodes 1 and 2 was breathtaking,
but that was a very expensive undertaking done just to pull in the viewers.
Those SHAFT tilts are incredibly expensive to animate, I suspect. It was a classic
"animation bump". In order to pay for the large costs of the first two episodes,
fans are going to have to accept that the quality of the remaining episodes will
be a bit lower than they might have hoped.

On the positive side, don't you feel happy that this anime series has FOUR theme
songs rather than the usual two? As usual, they have the OP and the ED theme.
In addition, there is that special theme song that they play during the preview for
the next episode. Finally, there is a fourth theme song that they play while they
are announcing the sponsors, which most of us won't see.

The first director, Akiyuki Shinbou, it is a veteran. He has directed 34 TV anime
series plus 20 OVAs. Also, he had a long career before he became a director.

Yes, their 3DCG of the grey ceramic rice cooker from 09:40 to 10:02 is very nice.
A lot of the effort in 3DCG goes into entering a mathematical description of the
shape, color and texture of the object into a computer. They have special software
tools for that. It would certainly be a lot easier for something round, like their rice
cooker. The bumpy ceramic-like texture is nice. They even fooled me into thinking
that the surface was sort-of reflective and sort-of dull, like real ceramic. But I think
that they faked that part, after looking really closely. I have only seen rice cooked
in an electric rice cooker, which is a lot simpler. You don't have to adjust the flame
or check the time.

I think that the soft-cooked omurice and the film that Ryou, Kirin and Shiina were watching are an homage to Itami Juzo’s “Tampopo”

“Apparently, this style of omuraisu / omurice (where the soft-cooked omelette is placed on top of a bed of fried rice, rather than wrapped around the rice) was developed for the movie [Tampopo] by the director [Itami Juzo] with the cooperation of Taimeiken, an old yoshoku (or yohshoku or youshoku (Japanese-style western cooking)) restaurant in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.”

@Bontakun65: What an astounding piece of trivia! I have watched that movie
so many times and remember that scene very well. But I always assumed that this
was a very basic recipe along the lines of what mom would make for an ordinary
dinner.

He sure put a lot of ketchup on top. But it was for the kid, and kids like tons of
ketchup on top. So it did make sense to do that. I would have been happy to eat
it without any ketchup, since the fried rice would provide enough sauce.

The omelet was done just right, in my opinion. Not too firm and not too liquidy.
The Koufuku girls don't cook their omelets quite long enough, it seems to me.

I just hope they washed that plate before they returned it.

It's a classic movie.

Speaking personally, my frying pan is made of cast iron. In other words, it is a
frying pan made out of iron. It is not made out of stainless steel. So it is a black
color rather than shiny. It rusts very easily unless it is taken care of in a special
way. It is extremely heavy and thick compared to a frying pan made of stainless
steel or one of these modern no-stick frying pans (which are made of aluminum).

Iron itself is a shiny metal. However, iron oxide is a dark color. Any object made
of iron will be shiny when you buy it but will darken quickly.

I could never imagine switching back to another kind of frying pan. Cast iron is
superior in every way. However, it is not modern technology. If you look at the
frying pans that were used a century ago, they were all cast iron. You buy one
and your children and grandchildren will also be using it. Compare that to a
non-stick (e.g. Teflon / T-fal ) frying pan where you have to replace it within a
fairly short time.

There is a lot of special knowledge required to use cast iron. For example, you
have to pick up the frying pan with two hands or else you will break your wrist.

I don't know for sure, but I tend to share your mother's concern that Teflon
might not be good for health. It is certain that many organic chemicals are
coming out during the obvious decomposition process that takes place each
time you cook something. Perhaps some of those chemicals end up in the food.
Perhaps some of those chemicals are unhealthy to eat. Maybe young children
are more susceptible. I don't know.

In my case, the cast iron will leach a certain amount of iron into my food. That
sounds like a good thing to me. Men normally don't actually need more iron,
but women almost always do, if I recall correctly.

Great episode!

I didn't realized this was made by Shaft until the tilt scenes keep getting frequently as well as those messy hair :P

Wow i love Omuraisu!! The color of the egg, ketchup on the side rice on the bottom.

WAAAH i want this :O

Shiina seems to be enjoying her time, glad Kirin doesn't mind her :P

3,000 Leagues in Search of Omuraisu seems to be based on something?

Lol Ryou thinking Shiina is being abducted by aliens!

It's nice to watch a simple and very good Anime. No over the topness, no fanservice, Just three girls eating food and enjoying and having a good t ime.

Plus Shaft tilt heads and close up lip scenes :D

I wonder if we'll see the next door neighbor in the next episode?! The one who only orders Pizza, she must be very jealous seeing these three cooking to their hearts content!

Can't wait for the next episode!

My guess is Tampopo, directed by Itami Juzo. The soft-cooked omuraisu was created for the movie, as I posted above. Also the main character, Goro (played by Yamazaki Tsutomu) wears a cowboy hat, like the character in the film the three girls were watching.

Scene the girls were watching.

Episode sympathetic, perhaps with a bit of exaggeration in the culinary field, but not bad storytelling that has managed to understand the underlying message.
Too bad that the study Shaft has worked in a really mediocre this time, very ugly drawings.
The ending and the PV, were really cute!
