From what I can garner about Japanese culture, which comes mostly from reading articles from tofugu and my interactions with an ex-pat friend who's been living over there for over a decade, he's probably feeling some level of shame considering he's the kind of otaku that a lot of women would consider "iyarashii" or repulsive/disgusting, and plus he's frankly not the very reliable kind of guy. The thing about work culture over there is if you're a woman, as is right now, you basically have to choose between career and having a family. Work hours for full time employment simply make raising small children and balancing a career at the same time close to impossible. So you end up with one parent working full time and the mother becoming a housewife with maybe part time, low pay work. I suspected it must be something particular to the culture. Glad I was able to figure out the other clues, the strongest one for me was the dude suddenly making a 180 doing the dishes, cleaning and stuff with the wife chilling on the couch (not looking sick). In such a family-centric traditional-style culture it definitely meant something important happened, like she is pregnant. | ^ you pretty much have it right on the money. It's a common thing in the orient to (in private at the very least) refer to your in-laws as "father" and "mother". Hell, my parents actually made a fuss of my older brother's wife not calling them "dad/father" or "mom/mother" and using uncle/auntie a few months ago. |

| ? smoking is pretty common....is it not......i mean me included & all the people around me, more than half of us smoke. for an anime that is a rather realistic take on relationships/everyday people, i actually didn't find it shocking that one of the two of them smokes. also she is not pregnant. here from a future episode |
