DiC3Epic said: Does Attack on Titan borrow things from Evangelion?
(SnK manga/anime and NGE spoilers ahead)
Now, before you call me a heretic for even considering the idea that Attack on Titan isn't 100% original, hear me out.
I am in no way claiming that Attack on Titan is unoriginal and is a mere copy of Eva.
Cause it's not.
Attack on Titan is a brilliant anime and is in fact, pretty original. I am a devout SnK fan and think it is the most refreshing anime I've seen in a long time. I just happened to see many similarities with the ever so popular Neon Genesis Evangelion.
With that out of the way, let me give you a brief summary of each of the anime's plots.
Attack on Titan
Known in Japan as Shingeki no Kyojin, many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV Series)
Evangelion is an apocalyptic anime in the mecha genre. The series is set in a futuristic Tokyo, fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm. The main story centers around Shinji, a teenage boy who is recruited by the shadowy organization NERV to pilot a giant bio-machine called an Evangelion in combat against monstrous beings known as Angels. The series explores the experiences and emotions of other Evangelion pilots and members of NERV as they attempt to prevent another catastrophe.
Doesn't sound too similar right?
One is a survival-horror anime set in an alternate, medieval universe.
The other is a psychological-mecha anime set in a futuristic Japan.
But the similarities are more obvious than one would think.
1.) PLOT
In Attack on Titan humanity is giving their best efforts to stop the titans from breaching through their three walls, which would result in humanities extinction.
In Neon Genesis Evangelion an organization known as NERV give their best efforts to stop the Angels from breaching Central Dogma, which would result in humanities extinction.
Both are mysterious, seem to have this overarching plot always weighing overhead, and always makes you ask a bunch more questions immediately after 1 is answered.
-Where did the Angels/Titans come from?
-Why do they want humanity to be destroyed?
-Why can certain people control these Angels/Titans?
2.) TITANS AND EVAS
In Attack on Titan, main protagonist Eren Jaeger gains the ability to transform into a Titan, he then uses this form to combat the other Titans, usually protecting Humanity.
-(Use Titans to fight Titans)
-It is revealed in the manga that Titans have an extremely similar DNA to that of humans.
(Not to mention the concept of transforming into a Titan is similar to the concept of piloting a Mech.)
In Neon Genesis Evangelion, main protagonist Shinji Ikari must pilot an Evangelion, which is later revealed to be an Angel, to combat the other Angels, usually protecting Humanity.
-(Use Angels to fight Angels)
-It is later revealed that the Angels also have very similar DNA to that of humans.
3.) CHARACTERS
This is a weaker part of my argument but bear with me.
Rei and Mikasa
What these two female characters have in common is very obvious.
-Both are the silent, semi-emotionless character
-Both care deeply for our main protagonists
-Both are total badasses.
-Although, Mikasa shows emotion far more than Rei and is more than Rei clone, obviously.
Asuka and Eren
While Eren is the main protagonist in SnK and Asuka isn't a main protagonist in NGE, there is a few similarities.
(Not very good ones admittedly.)
-Both Asuka and Eren are the hot-headed, "The louder I scream the more powerful my attack."
kind of characters.
-Both witness their mother's death.
Yeah, that's about it.
To be fair this kind of character is pretty common in anime and both are far more complex and in different ways.
Shinji and Armin
-Both bitch a lot.
-Both feel like a burden to others.
To be fair to both sides, Shinji has some pretty legitimate reasons for his whining and Armin gets more confidence as the story goes on.
Shinji and Eren
-Both Shinji and Eren witness their mother's death
-Both appear to have daddy issues
-Both fathers are mysterious and seem like they have something to do with the Angels/Titans
-Both fathers give their children their way of fighting the Angels/Titans (By giving/making them an Angel/Titan)
-Both yell and scream. A lot.
-Both are loved by a sexy, silent friend.
That concludes most of the similarities I found between these two anime.
Please remember that I am a huge fan of both series and that I am not saying Attack on Titan copied Evangelion.
Evangelion is one of the most influential anime ever created and was a huge success, so it's no surprise SOME similarities would arise.
(Serial Experiments Lain was heavily influenced by Evangelion, but it's both a great and original anime too)
This post was made solely for debate and discussion for those who may agree with me and those who don't. My opinions are my own and do not affect you.
So what do you think?
-Evangelion had no influence on Attack on Titan and I'm comparing two entirely different things.
-Evangelion had some influence on Attack on Titan, but Attack on Titan is still a great and original anime. (Where I stand on the subject)
-Attack on Titan is simply an Evangelion clone.
-Or perhaps something entirely different
Masterful trolling. I applaud. |
