Yes I know that was who you were talking about, there was one flashback scene with him and said abuser wherein what was showed was rather tame but what was implied on the other hand was quite disturbing. Same with Now and then, here and there, and might I add, the scene from this episode. When it comes to the author's intentions behind it, I can agree, it's very creepy, however what was shown was not so.

Also you have to admit that saying something yet not showing is a whole lot less impactful than saying and then showing. Even with your example of the IBO character, that whole backstory would have lost 'something' if it had not been shown and delivered in the way it was. It's one thing to just hear it coming from the character's lips, but seeing it too?

So I apologize, I sounded as if I was defending something I was not, but I thank you for letting me clarify, if I was able to just now.
oh dont let my language make it seem like I was trying to be antaognistic, i just have a potty mouth even when typing that makes my language read stronger then i intend.

I can understand the logic of seeing vs hearing having impact, but this is simply not the case for this part I'd argue. Given the gratuitous and fetishized nature of the nudity in the manga as well as how this scene, in particular, was actually used as a "light hearted" joke

I simply cannot see this as anything other than the author inserting his fetish. Theres simply one too many times something like this happens to be excused as just some way of showing how messed up the world is. Especially when the act of sending children off to their deaths in places full of monsters is already good enough of showing that. The sexual content only takes away from the overall tone, maturity, and impact of the story. The only way I would of seen this as a way to showcase a messed up setting is if the scene was handled in a totally different light, its far too light hearted and comical.

While i do agreed that the author is inserting his fetish into the manga, It doesn't take away the tone for me at all . Some might feel uncomfortable about it in the manga but to me it just feel natural. Considering the World that they lives aren't exactly happy-go-luck.

Wait, is there going to be more of this sort of stuff? Because this scene honestly made me uncomfortable, as short as it was. I mean, she's a minor for crying out loud, not even in her pre-teens as far as I can tell. This scene just felt dirty and if there is more of this type of thing that I'm going to have to reconsider watching this even though the plot actually seems interesting.

Questionable fanservice is quite big of criticism for the manga version I heard. People hoped they would tone it down or remove in adaptation but alas.

Based on most of this thread, one could be lead to believe that the only reason why Made in Abyss is claimed to be the anime of the season is that one second of Riko hanging naked. Not that I'm surprised, I mean, why talk about the interesting reveals in the episode, when we can drool over the prospect of more naked lolis. Whatever floats that proverbial boat, I guess.

I pick up just one show this season and it still can't escape the fetish baggage that of course derails the dicussion into fan wank and ethical debates. Yeah, I'm a little salty about that. Even if I can usually like something while also disagreeing with some parts of it... this time it leaves an especially sour taste.

It was fun to see Regu's behavior towards Riko in that scene, that was cute~

And the opening was so cute as well, but I think it won't be as happy as it looks... Idk, Intuition lol

Hmmmmhmmmmmm thats a sweet opening. In terms of both visuals and ost. She was extremely thorough when checking out Reg and his features. This episode was also pretty heavy in the feels with Riko's backstory being revealed pretty early on with plenty of information regarding her and her Mom. And it's only episode 2. I look forward to the next episode.

Aside from that, I'm really wondering about what sorts of methods are used for punishing here. Being strung up nude is pretty bad already, but this orphanage has an execution room. Thats pretty freakin dark.

Another great episode.

I'm in love with the background art and awed by the world structure tbh.
But the scene of kids casually crossing the river at that height gave me shivers. How can they lead a safe life while living in a world like that is mystery to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lyza sounds like a legend. I'd love to see her in flesh, if by any chance we get to know more of her in person.

When I saw that people complained about a naked girl getting whipped I expected to see see more than a scene that lasts a few seconds at most. I kind of expected a scene that woud last minutes the way people are reacting here. Man it's at times like this I'm glad I can just enjoy things without being hurt by the little things.

Anyway some cool stuff happened in this episode like the revelation that Riko was born in the abyss. Her mother is pretty hardcore.

Quite like this anime so far. It's honestly a lot of fun seeing everyone interact and the world is really interesting. I'll probably pick up the manga. for this one.

Lol you do understand that it is important for the story and world building to show this scene? It's not like they were fetishizing it with weird camera angles or sounds, the whole point of that scene was to show how messed up the world is yet how normal that is to the characters in it. And if you didn't like seeing that you might well drop the show now cuz it's not going to get any better my dude.
No, I didn't know/understand that, I haven't read the manga. If you claim It'll all make sense later on, I'll believe you. I also didn't imply that they were fetishizing it, but considering the image that most non-otaku have of anime, just showing kids in a vaguely sexual situation will turn them off no matter the tone or context. (I'd also argue the dialogue about the stick was somewhat fetishy, but whatever). Thirdly, I like this show. A few scenes that clash with what I was hoping it would be won't make me dislike it.

I totally agree. The nude strung-up child and her talking about shoving sticks of another little boy's ass were really unnecessary and it was a bit of a turn-off for me (but overall I'm still enjoying the show). While I can understand that it's important to show how f-ed up their world is while portraying it as totally normal for them, and I can see it's necessary to illustrate that Reg has relatively normal human anatomy despite his mechanical enhancements, those scenes in question were entirely unnecessary since both her being strung up naked as punishment and his genitalia were already addressed in the first episode through dialogue. If anything, these scenes were simply animated to satisfy the fetishy manga-readers.

Don't get why people are so mad at the Regs body analysis and Riko's punishment. I found it quite interesting that even though Reg is a robot he still possess working biological anatomy. Its a sort of coming of age thing, Riko's actually 12 so to have interest in some "external parts" shouldn't be counted as lust but curiosity. Makes these kids feel more human in a way.
The punishment scene also shows that whoever's making this is not afraid...that's a good thing. The terror of the abyss wouldn't be captured if they were squeamish

Great episode! It tackles a lot of information which can normally be overwhelming but they did a good job of pacing out the info dumping with character development.

Lyza sounds like she is one hell of a badass! Lyza left a cryptic message for her daughter and a goal for her to reach her mother...next episode is titled "departure" so it seems the adventure will begin as they travel through the Abyss! I can't wait!!!

The next few episodes will probably be pretty fast paced (next episode should adapt 3 or 4 chapters), but it should end at a very good stopping point based on a few hints in the OP.

Poor Reg... xD I feel bad for him haha
So Riko's mother is a legendary explorer who disappeared but i doubt that she is dead, especially with that message.
But i am still very curious about who Reg is and what was he doing there...
I have a great feeling that Riko is immune to the Abyss disease.

Pretty good episode and world building but the hanging scene existing does lead to worry that this series really will just give into edging it up for the sake of the edge. I've heard a ton of people complain that the series just gives into fetishizing suffering for the sake of torture porn.

There is nothing wrong with it, the author can do whatever he want with its own manga, and i just hope they preserve it into the anime too, because is part of the original material.
I also dislike that adaptions tone down content because they want more western audience, compromises are never and always a good thing, they have their own audience, otaku or not don't matter, they have to stick with it not please some foreign whiners.

Yep that's exactly what I for one plan to do. It's too bad because after the first episode it looked like a really cool show, but I just can't stomach those images or relate to an author who chooses to use them, especially if there is more to come.

I really like it so far. This episode was even more interesting than the first one. The world is really intriguing and I can't wait to learn more about it and the abyss. I thought that the chara design would be a bit hard to get used to in the first episode, but I think that it's okay, it fits the show. One minor nitpick is that I was kinda disturbed by the rope punition thing with the naked child. I dont mind them being naked and their banter around the stick and everything (was quite funny tbh, reminded me of South Park), but this was a bit too much. I can see that Children have to age really fast in this (post-apocalyptic ?) world, and I hope that it won't be used to justify some Loli BS or stuff like that.

In this show? Goodness gracious, no. There are scenes in the manga that cross the boundary of world-building and goes straight into soft hentai. I'm all for a faithful adaptation but even I don't want those animated.

That said, a sarashi would be a good compromise.
