Was not happy with this show at all, felt like it tried way too hard to be artistic. Too much unnecessary nudity and violence (seriously, nobody bleeds that much) and the plot just really didn't make much sense at all, being artistic is cool and all but this show definitely way overdid it, 5/10 from me.

I was eating when I watched this. The gore was even more intense that for the first time, I actually felt slightly disturbed especially in the scene with Fujiki.
Interesting, the mighty Kogan was defeated because he let his guard down when his daughter appeared.

I don't blame Mie for fainting, I would have had the same reaction if I was in a room full of dismembered corpses and some guy's brain sliding off from the side of his face lol.

I was expecting them to continue the first episode. It was a good show, very artistic.

Really amazing series but i wasn't that happy with how the anime ended (and almost puked at the fujiki-kogan fight scene). Hope they make a continuation series.

Great series! The ending left me a little disappointed though, I would have liked to see the fight between Irako and Fujiki resolved. Oh well! It just makes me more excited to read the manga!

Shitty ending, otherwise a great show with a few flaws but nothing too bad. Would've gave a 9/10 if the ending was solid, 7/10 with such a shitty ending though. Saying "but the source material does it better" doesn't make the anime any less of a disappointment at the end.

The manga is almost exactly the same up to that point. I thought it was a great cliffhanger. But it wasn't an ending. Criticize the 2007 viewers instead of the show. It's the best adaptation it could have been with limited appeal and a tight budget.

Brilliant series, but I found the lack of ending a bit unsettling to say the least. I hope now to find the series to find out important stuff that happened.

The incomplete ending really does ruin this anime all thanks to the first episode. 7/10 simply because it's different than the usual anime out there. The crazy old man was truly the entertainment.

5/10-6/10, Cliffhanger from the first episode killed it, while I liked how they portrayed a lot of the characters and how it showed the realism of that era in Japan, I felt that the anime ended with far too many questions and not enough answers.

What happens to Mie? Does she stay crazy?

How does Fuji lose his arm?

What is the conclusion from episode 1?

Those are just 3 big questions off the top of my head, if I took the time to analyze I could probably find a lot more big questions as to what the hell went on.

Was a solid 7-8/10 till the ending, ending left me with a sour taste, so I'd give it a 5/10

its a shame that this is incomplete, none the less this series while at times was trying a bit too hard to be edgy or gross out still told a really interesting story of betrayal, revenge, and bloodlust, it had a cool atmosphere and how it handled its fights were quite unique

7/10

I love it up until the last episode. The last episode was good if it wasnt the end. Did they stopped the anime or thats the end? So many unaswered questions and you build up for that epic fight just to not show it.
I guess i will stick with mangas as always from now on....

The reason i am not satisfied is because they didnt even told us how he lost his arm. Not telling the result of the final battle isnt that bad. Because none of them is the "bad" guy, so it just lets you decide. But at least show the scene and cut right before they hit each other :/

There were two swords; one was shorter than the other - the longer was thrown at the ground in an attempt to injure Irako's feet, while the shorter was used by Kogan in his Nagareboshi.

Reason? Unknown. Haven't digged too much into it.

I highly doubt they'd continue the series, just like how Berserk hasn't been adapted past the Golden Age arc so far. There's way too much graphic/disturbing content (and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, though I will admit it was testing my limits).

If you had Terra Formars style censorship in the continuation, you'd be seeing entire black screens for a long time.

It's a lose-lose situation. Censor or cut content, and you lose the hardliner fanbase. Show that stuff, and you will gross newcomers out. The manga has a niche fanbase, and odds are their revenue estimates didn't justify production. In the end, money talks.

Nice show, but looks like Madhouse will add it to their scrap heap of single season shwos as expected.

I read the first few chapters of the manga, and the art was surprisingly passable, so I guess it was very very successful at being an ad too

I find it ironic that Irako's certain victory stance (sword flicks up in great speed upwards) is more representative of the Nagareboshi (shooting star) and superior to Kogan's original slingshot move..

Not really, its more of a, go read the manga to finish the story, type deal, although I heard from a friend the manga is also somewhat ambiguous in it's ending.

Any who, it wasn't necessary for this anime to show the first episode with the way it ended, although this was an awesome as hell watch. 8/10

I didn't expect Irako to have a very different singing voice. I shivered when he almost jumped on that blade. Iku's version of a bad end surprised me for a second since I thought that actually happened then remembered that Irako shiuldn't die there. The Kogan Tiger design was very remarkable, I must say.

Kogan might've survived if he didn't slice down his bodyguards but they wanted to killsteal so I guess they had it coming. Despite being a fucking bitch throughout the series, I felt bad for Kogan when he started to appreciate his daughter as his daughter a tad too late... I kinda chuckled when Mie fainted tho.

Fujiki's so desperate that he's giving mouth ta mouth resuscitation to a half-faced corpse of a mad man. Gonzaemon's grieving death wails were a little hard ta take in. It ended too early since Fujiki didn't get his arm cut off kek.

This series captured the freaky kill or be killed world of Feudal Japan quite well in a disturbing way. It could've been a few episodes longer to explain what happened in the first episode though.

Hey can you guys please explain why is irako so powerful that he killed the master

My memory was a bit fuzzy but after takin' a look at the final fight scene, I think I have an idea.

Despite Irako being blinded, he was already used to that disability and incorporated it into his sword style, proof of which he has managed to kill most of the Iwamoto dojo elders. He was already a gifted swordsman before he arrived at the Dragon's dojo and he even managed to train under it for a few years. The reason why Kogan lost was maybe that Irako realized that he uses the same freaking move to end every serious battle he's in and read his movements (Irako even managed to pull off what Kogan when he sliced that rice grain on that lady's nipple). He dodged Kogan's Nagareboshi and held his sword in a similar fashion that Fujiki does by holding the very tip of the hilt. It had better reach and it slashed the Dragon first, chopping half his head off in the process.

Orrrr Irako's just that OP lolz

This wonderful series left me hanging and asking myself lots of questions like how did Fujiki lost his arm and how did Irako became such a demented man. The duel never continued, what the hell was that oh man this was a great series to watch and hoped to see more. I am glad Irako killed that bastard Kogan he got what he deserved ( the writer wanted us to feel sorry for him in the end), I hope Fujiki dies when it continues somewhere in the future.

well for a dude who got half his face cut off he was handling it well. So I guess we arent going back to the fight. At least the biggest asshole of all the assholes finally died. This show was meh. It had some nice violence and some nice visuals but nothing else. Everyone was ether crazy or just awful people so there was no reason to care about what was going on. This in the end was a tough sit through and thank god it was only 12 episodes.

Overall this series for me, was okay.

It annoyed me that the pacing was so slow and that episode 1 you don't get a resolution. It would have been better if it wasn't shown if the show was never going to fully build up on it. The whole series felt like a waste of time due to this fact. I understand that it's due to not being finished in the manga.

Aside from that the animation was top notch (expected from Madhouse) and the setting was great.

Exposition the anime gets 6/10 out of me. Just for the polish and the story falls flat for me due to false promise of a build up. (Hoping for season 2)

I'm so glad that I stumbled over this show. It's definitely something that stands out in terms of atmosphere, really enjoyed the calm sensation it emitted and the goosebumps on top.

Even tho the story wasn't the factor which captivated me it was still good enough to keep me interested in the events.

8/10 from me

I didn´t like this at all, the art was great but everything else not so much, the pacing is way toooo slooow to the point i found very tedious to watch this anime, it would be better if this was a 90 minutes movie instead of a 12 episodes series but with faster pacing instead, the animation is good when there is some of it but most of the time it looks like a slideshow, i also think they overdid that grain filter and those cicadas sounds. There is almost no character development and i didn´t like any of the characters, no one was likeable and i found the story to be your standard revenge story presented in a needlessly confusing way with all those time skips, and the ending does not resolve the cliffhanger presented in the first episode

I know that the anime is like 1/3 of the manga and the unanswered questions are solved in the manga but they could have tried at least to wrap up the fight presented in the first episode and explain how Furiki lost his arm as well. I rate it 5/10, mostly because of how slow it was and the ending wich left a lot of things unresolved.

Loved the atmosphere and pace of the series (expect the part of it not being finished of course), it reminded me of some classic Samurai cinema.

The gore was abit too graphic for my taste and some actions by characters, specifically eating a womans nipple was just overly grotesque in my opinion and seemed over the top for that character to even do something like that.

It is a shame we never got more of this. If only because despite being a Japanese art form it is somewhat bizarre how Samurai focused Anime are such a rarity. Oh well.

While I would have liked to have seen this story completed I'm not overly upset about not having to stomach more of the gore this series would have presumably continued to 'offer'.

Still the series had great artstyle, brilliant ost and the story up to this point was gripping. 8/10

Shigurui anime and it's superior manga are highly underrated.

I finished the manga a couple of years ago and it's definitely worth reading, one of the best Samurai stories ever, the ending was shocking, underwhelming, tragic and the best possible conclusion.

AHH I really wanted to see a continuation of the first episode, Irako vs. Fujika. And to see how he lost his arm/got a limp. I didn't expect the season to end like this welp.

Anyway, 8/10 for me. The OST was excellent, so while maybe I'll read the manga one day, IDK if the manga can be as epic as a season 2.
