I can imagine a lot of people being confused by this episode, but there really wasn't that much to it xD It shows how all this time he was just forgetting things on purpose because he couldnt accept it and just shutting it out.

Pretty much that yeah. I guess the reason why people are complaining is because it could have been done in half the time but instead dragged on.

Ugh... not a fan of how the nice plot development they had going was interrupted for an episode filled with mumbo-jumbo. Now, I actually don't mind if an show spews out mumbo-jumbo (seeing as GitS:SAC tops my list of favorites), but it at least needs to be integrated well.

I agree with the notion that Re-I is pretty good-looking... occasionally. The problem is that her character design is very inconsistent. She looks gorgeous in some scenes but terrible in others.

"The future is an opaque mirror. Anyone who tries to look into it sees nothing but the dim outlines of an old and worried face" (Jim Bishop). Vincent Law is trying to look into the future and is seeing that old and worried face, his own, in the bookshop owner. Metaphorical, philosophical, powerful episode. Exactly what self discovery feels like, you have infinite questions and the only answer is to accept what you know deep down.

Pretty much what I thought. Self discovery is pretty much the circular feeling this episode tries to portray. I liked it, but I also like philosophy. *shrugs*

Good episode although maybe a tad verbose for my taste. Show it, don't say it Mr. Sato.

I'm pretty sure it's done on purpose. Rarely is self discovery and acceptance of who you are quiet; there's a lot of talk going on in our heads. Plus, it was somewhat necessary as Vincent has pretty much continuously ignored all subtle hints. The only way for him to accept was to pound it to him otherwise he'll continue to deny it to the end of time. It's a bit realistic in a way.

And we ain't got time for that.

Hot damn! This show keeps on getting better and better. And this is so only if you like the philosophy that goes into this. I haven't studied much philosophy yet, but I can find the ideas of Continental Rationalists in it. Descartes can be found in this episode for his well known "I think, therefore I am," however, his philosophy is not prominent here. The most notable philosophy I recognized in this episode is Leibniz's monadology. It is demonstrated when Vincent listens to Ergo Proxy talk to him about perspective, point of origin, and you see the baby with the mask! And then Vincent falls back into the scene that started the "proxy-mask on everyone's face" scene, and he isn't actually in the same position he started at, but behind himself, and observes himself looking at the proxy. Eh... It's hard to explain, but Leibniz's philosophy might be the key to understanding proxies.

English dubs may be distracting to watch, but the translations for the dubs are easier to understand the philosophy presented in the anime. With the subs, I kind of had no idea what was going on. And the dub version is not bad at all.

This episode, despite very confusing but I'm sure this holds a deeper meaning than just told the audience that "Vincent = Ergo Proxy"

Quite enjoying the philosophical and metaphor thing. I like this kind of show.

COGITO ERGO SUM (I think, threfore I exist) or something along that line from Descartes. just wow

I watched a fan sub that took time after the episode to elaborate on the history of the City Lights bookstore as well as Roussous Essay on the Origin of Language. I think it really added a lot to the episode and helped strengthen the themes being presented in this show.

Was this part of the episode or exclusive to this particular sub(was on animejoy.com)?

This whole episode reminded me of the final two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Where, in EVA Shinji was breaking down the barriers between his mind and the minds of the others, here Vincent was coming to terms with all his memories which point to him being Ergo Proxy. Especially the moment where he attacked Re-l.

That's exactly what I was thinking! Evangelion had it at its conclusion, though, and this is midway through the series. It killed the momentum it had going. I suppose it could be considered normal as a sort of midway point, to recalibrate things, and if that's the case, things should pick up soon.

The focus on Vincent would've been lost if it had cut away to other characters during these sequences, so it was necessary to devote a chunk of time to this. I wonder what it would've been like if it had been compressed to ten minutes instead of twenty. I'm curious about Re-l.

They spent the whole episode spouting philosophical stuff just to tell us that Vincent Law finally accepted that he is the Ergo Proxy.

They had to waste an entire episode to make up for that character's stupidity.

And Lil managed to find them even though they were in the middle of nowhere, how ? Even Pino and Law didn't even know where they were, I hope we do get a logical explanation for this.

Wow.

This episode was really a defiant attempt by the show creators in taking such a simple concept of Vincent accepting that he's a proxy (you would think that itself wouldn't take up a whole episode) into a crystallization of his inner state of mind to this dreadful truth and situation before and after. Plenty of surreal imagery & abstract symbolism as well as ominous psychological visuals (especially the fog and mirrors) are all serve to enhance Vincent's confused and self-denial state. This sole aspect is why this is one of my favourite episodes of the series so far. We're not merely watching an anime; this is an experience in a way we can almost accompany and put ourselves in the same shoe with Vincent.

We are also being delved into some more deep, philosophical dialogue which I really had to pay attention to in regards to its counter-point of the famous phrase "I think, therefore I am". Is the world really living by itself absolutely or through its perceptive recognition by others? Just because someone can interpret reality, does it also mean it's actually there? Hence, is reality entirely a mere construction of our sense? It reinforces more of Ergo Proxy's underlying themes throughout the series on there are different ways to see reality; regardless if they're true or not.

I'm almost the first person to point out when a show feels boring and/or dragged out by heavy, stale narrative exposition (Fate/Zero is an obvious one) but it was never the case here based from the content I explained in my first paragraph. Kudos for the show there.

This show really has striking similarities in sub-text with The Matrix I must say.

Definitely the best episode of the series so far.  Vincent is having an explosion of thoughts while in a state of sleep. The bookkeeper is essentially the gatekeeper for Vincent's memories. The reason all books are empty are because Vincent had his memories erased.

The fight between the bookkeeper and the proxy is essentially a fight between the part of him which is identified by his memories and the part of him which is based on instinct. Essentially the suppressed memories come to the surface through this conflict and Vincent is able to identify himself as ergo proxy. This is the reason the bookkeeper refers to him as ergo proxy in the end.

However many questions remain unanswered. Is the 'proxy condition' a virus which needs human hosts to survive? Who created proxies? What is the purpose of a proxy? All that remains to be seen.

"In other words, it is through words that have opposite meanings, that the secrets of the world are revealed. The word bios carries both the meaning of bow and life at the same time. Though bow and life are completely unrelated to each other, they both lead to death, as the ancients nicely put it."

I'm glad to see the creators aren't merely name-dropping philosophers and philosophical concepts in this series. The law of opposites/polarity is something so simple, yet rarely known or understood.

I can appreciate what this episode was trying to do on a conceptual level, but I found myself zoning out in the second half. I mean, these three just kept going on and on and on... It's not that I was more confused than usual (I roughly knew what was happeningl), rather that I kept forgetting what he was talking about just minutes before (and most of the specifics were lost on me anyways). And it's kind of a shame because I usually enjoy episodes like this. I'd say it had "too much dialogue" but I'm not even sure if I can call it dialogue, as for the most part these characters were merely speaking in each other's direction.

Even after looking up some analysis, the philosophical references in this episode feel a little gratuitous. They just don't really resonate with me.

I think the reason why I didn't like this one might also be that the episode was underwhelming in the visual department. Sure, there was plenty of symbolism but it just didn't look exciting or new to me. Maybe it was literally "too dark", and nothing really stood out. The cut I remember the most is when a scantily clad Re-l was shown from Ergo's perspective. It's a pretty good cut, but it managed to outshine everything else, which is less good.

Tien said:

I'm probably being pedantic, but it's not the character design that's inconsistent. She has a great character design. The issue is that her face is really detailed and anatomically faithful, and while I appreciate the effort in frequently drawing her from various different angles, her face still gets all messed up half the time. I doubt it's intentional, but it's not 100% impossible.

I can only speculate as to what went wrong; perhaps a rushed production, poor direction, or just some people messed up at some point. The only thing I have against the character design is that if they weren't going to follow through with it, they should have simplified it from the start.

But this doesn't only apply to Re-l, most of the main characters faces get a little messed up from time to time, it's just more apparent with Re-l, due to her eyeshadow. Even Pino is pretty inconsistent, despite having a much more abstract moe face.

I probably dislike these sort of episodes because it feels like a pointlessly roundabout way to get a point across.

So basically Vincent was still in denial that he was Ergo Proxy but has begun to accept the truth. Though not completely since he is still "Vincent" and has yet to regain his past memories.

Makes you wonder if both personalities will merge or if his past self, Ergo Proxy, will end up taking over.

Wasn't expecting to directly encounter Heraclitus in this show, but I probably shouldn't be surprised by that considering what the writing's been playing around with so far.

That's one way to come to terms with your dual nature, I guess. The direction of this show is super tight and creative which saves this from being fluff. Visually, it was very impactful.

Feel like this is a prime example of being purposefully pretentious with not a lot of substance behind it.

It's all fine and good to explore the concepts of free will, ontological categories, personal identity, etc. But these explorations have to be conveyed to the watcher in a way that is comprehendible. As someone who is very familiar with these topics, it is still completely unclear to me what was trying to be conveyed here.

For one thing, a bunch of the stuff is totally contradictory in this episode, regarding the relationship between existence, self-subsistance, the purpose of life, yadda yadda. A bunch of these 'theses' (if you can even call them that) are logically incompatible and the show makes no effort to elaborate on their relationship or plausibility.

I'm sure there are people out there who think this is a 'deep' episode, because it makes you question things, but you can do literally the same by ripping incompatible random quotes from the German Idealists and glueing them together in a scrapbook. The only difference here is that there is a nice animation behind it.

Really disappointing really, and I'm hoping effort is put into elaborate on what the hell this was all about.

I can effectively tell you right now (with no specific spoilers, of course), that if you're looking for the script to be as tight in parts and both conclusive in the end while remaining open to interpretation and still as coherent all the way through as something like Lain, you're going to be probably very bitter by the end of this; especially with some episodes in the back half of the season.

I love Ergo Proxy for the ideas it does raise even when not always satisfactorily addressing them, its hybrid cyberpunk and neo-Gothic atmosphere, and its ambition, but you're absolutely correct in saying often when a certain philosophical concept is briefly name-dropped and worked in as a quick reference, it isn't always adequately explained how it relates in the story and if you're that interested in the topics at hand, you'll be better reading up on it in books and online in your own time. It tells a story with a huge scope, but at the cost of some of the philosophy receiving murky and superficial shortcut treatment at times. Again, compared to something like Lain, I just don't think it could as perfectly clinch all the ideas together in the tightness of the writing (I only bring that series up because they're often recommended as companion pieces).

Hey thanks so much for the thoughtful response.

This is roughly what I was expecting--I suppose it's unreasonable to want something as philosophically grounded in an anime (even Lain was quite wishy washy). The best 'grounded' type of philosophical media has always been something like black mirror or star trek, where a single theme is explored in more depth and, though they often aren't proposing a solution to questions, they supply the viewer enough material to adequately reach their own conclusion.

I don't think there are many anime like this unfortunately.
