Even though I'm pretty much an utter fanboy of Madoka Magica right now, I've managed to watch the likes of the first two seasons of Lyrical Nanoha, and right now I'm getting into the likes of Yuki Yuna is a Hero, having just seen the first season and just about to wrap up watching the Washio Sumi prequel to it, so I can get around to watching S2 once that finally starts airing. (Do stuff like KLK, the LWA series, or even PASWG count? Because I love the first two, and found the last one passable even though it was kinda amusing to watch despite how crude it was xD) Right now I'd like to check out more magical girl shows, but I'm not exactly sure where to go once I'm done with the Yuki Yuna series this year. Could back to watching more Nanoha since I haven't seen StrikerS yet. Or maybe I'd go a bit more "old school" and watch either Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura, but not all at once, since there's a lot to cover with both shows. Or I could just do whatever suits my fancy and watch whatever at any given time. That's really how I tend to roll anyway, but I'm still fine with taking some recs from people in the meantime to watch later on. |

I'd say Pingu. You know, he isn't a girl but the genre moved trough so many metamorphosis stages in current year, you could say it's totally acceptable. He has magical transformations(devoid of fan service!!!) and helps people. A true deconstruction, not like that shit second hand anime Madoka Edgica. |

In my opinion the best in the genre is Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru, not an expert in the genre but compared to the few I've watched is the best one. |

That's really how I tend to roll anyway, but I'm still fine with taking some recs from people in the meantime to watch later on. Just FYI, Nanoha StrikerS isn't about cute little magical girl Nanoha herself anymore, but casts her and Fate as military commanders and mentors to up-and-coming TSAB mages. StrikerS seems to be the least popular of the first three seasons, presumably because many people still wanted the "cute little magical girl" thing (though there still is some of that), but I personally really liked it and I list it as one of my all-time favorite series. I'm saying this so you'll know what you're getting into and won't feel jarred by the change in Nanoha's role in the story, and I still heavily recommend it, especially if you enjoyed the character development in the first two series. Speaking of older shows, I'm surprised people here haven't mentioned Magic Knight Rayearth. Edit: Wait, no, someone actually did, about an hour ago. |

Oh, I should probably also make a plug for Umi Monogatari. Girls with magical powers and transformation sequences? Yes. But beyond that, it challenges the usual tropes, and does so by telling a pretty compelling story that encourages the viewer to reflect on the true meaning of evil. Uta~Kata is another example of such a show (though it only has one magical girl, strictly speaking). It predates MadoMagi by a number of years but I feel it handles that "dark take" on the genre more effectively. And since we're on the topic of more mature/dark takes on the genre, there's also Mai-HiME. I didn't really like it as much though. |

What are the rules for being eligible to be considered as a magical girl series? -transforming from a state of powerlessness -> power induced -must include a transforming sequence -must be/or include a girl that transforms? Also i cant decide between choosing Nanoha or Symphogear for best mahou shoujo |

I actually liked Happy Seven's concept. A harem where the MC is part of the group of girls that like the guy. And the characters' ages were varied from elementary school children to an adult. It was rather short though... Kill la Kill was fun, but a little too flashy given its art style... Lol Puni Puni Poemi. Flip Flappers was really interesting, but it it had some downers with some of its episodes. Madoka's writing is great, but the show felt more like a drama series than a Mahou Shoujo... Utena was great, but the Mahou Shoujo element was a minuscule element. It was cool how they did it though. Nanoha is pretty straightforward, but it's clean. So from the Mahou Shoujo anime that I've seen, it's probably the most well-rounded with the characters and the magic. As for Symphogear...well I'm pretty biased towards it. The writing certainly isn't the best, but that anime did things that I would never have expected it to do, and it sets itself apart from most other anime which is what contributed to its success. The action, the choreography, the movie and video game references, the music, the character designs (especially the character designs), and the overall ridiculousness of it is what made it my favorite Mahou Shoujo anime. And of course, it's the series where I finally found the waifu of my dreams. There are some things that Nanoha does better than Symphogear, and then there are some thing that Symphogear does better than Nanoha. Since the two are like mother and daughter (Nana willed them both after all), I think it's safe to say that they're both great. ^_^ |

At first I was going to go with Sailor Moon because of Sailor Mars, but as I thought about it I remembered a much more recent show that I watched. Gotta go with Shuumatsu no Izetta, because Izetta rides an anti-tank rifle while only wearing something that looks a lot like a surgical gown. zunderdog24 said: Little Witch Academia is not a Magical girl anime. Little Witch Academia and Princess Tutu are the best magical girl shows. Both shows have fantastic foreshadowing, good plot twists and well written characters. both anime are easy to follow along but rewards viewers that pay attention to the references and background details that relate to the main story. I can't think of any other magical girl anime that tops those two in overall execution. |
